Ds at preschool, attached to a Primary. Tomorrow is their Nativity and he has been telling me he is an angel. Lovely, son, cant wait to come see you singing your songs.

They had a dress rehearsal today and all the classes at the Primary watched. Dd is at the Primary. She has told me this evening that DS is "the only boy angel, lots of girl angels and he and the girls are wearing white and gold sparkly dresses".

I try and make sure my kids know clothes are just clothes. Whatevs. As long as you are comfy and happy I am happy. However dd also said some of her classmates were laughing saying "your brother is a girl".

Ive no idea what the costume is like, they are all provided. So I reckon they are just a bog standard white and gold bit of cloth and thats that. However what if it is a dress? He clearly doesnt care otherwise he wouldnt wear it, so Im happy he is happy, but what if the other kids keep on with the comments given to dd today?

He’s Angel Gabriel’s best mate, surely.

TulipsInbloom1 · 11/12/2018 20:54

Oh he is totally happy, "Im a boy angel mammy". Dds classmates comments have me concerned though. If there are loads of angels then why not have more than one boy angel? More than one boy in a

TulipsInbloom1 · 11/12/2018 21:02

Did they get to choose their parts?
My friends DS isn’t allowed be an angel as angels are girls!

TulipsInbloom1 · 11/12/2018 21:18

Ah thats a shame! He hasnt really told me much about it all tbh.

The only three named angels, Gabriel, Michael and Raphael are all male.
The rest exist more as ‘forces’ or concepts I would say, like guardian angels who guide us and protect us without any reference to their gender.
Angels wear white gown things, you know, like Jesus and many other people both male and female from the Middle East.

Dextrodependant · 11/12/2018 21:21

I think angels are actually male aren't they, in the bible? Have I made that up?

Bestseller · 11/12/2018 21:23

Why are angels in nativity plays so often girls when the actual angels were male?

isittheholidaysyet · 11/12/2018 21:23

Angels don't have a sex.
The ones whose names we know seem to have names which are traditionally used for boys.

We often have boys playing angels at my kids school, but parents provide the costumes, so they usually provide appropriate 'male' costumes. Some kind of white robe with appropriate accessories.
(Which have included armour, or leather jackets!)

I would find it strange if a boy was put in what is essentially a white fairy dress, unless he demanded it.

(No problem with boys in fairy dresses, my ds spent his young years in one. I would just find it strange if a teacher provided that costume for a boy with no other context, like him requesting it.)

Biblically angels are usually men. Sometimes they even get flaming swords, although I've yet to meet an infant school teacher prepared to equip the kids with realistic props.
I've got a girl king who is now starting to worry about being teased. Given that other kids are sheep, camels and a donkey, I don't see an issue with a bit of same species cross dressing.

Oldraver · 11/12/2018 21:28

When DS was 8 he was really upset they had changed their minds about boys being angels. School gave in and let him

I mean...such a cute angel Grin

TulipsInbloom1 · 11/12/2018 21:29

Oh im certain he will look cute as a button. Its the dress, if it is an actual dress, and the comments from his sisters classmates which is bothering me.

greatest show I hope someone pointed out to teacher angels named in the bible have male names. Although obviously they are neither male nor female.

CalishataFolkart · 11/12/2018 21:34

Angels are sexless - the “el” at the end of their names refers to god. If god is male then angels have male names.

CalishataFolkart · 11/12/2018 21:35

X post with Budgie.

Shylo · 11/12/2018 21:38

My son was the angel Gabriel in his school
Play three years ago, when he was six. The only boy in a sea of girls. He didn’t give a crap and no one said anything much to him

If your DS is happy just ignore the silly girls

category12 · 11/12/2018 21:38

He's in preschool. You're overthinking this. It'll be fine.

Shylo · 11/12/2018 21:39

Sorry, classmates not girls lol

PurpleFlower1983 · 11/12/2018 21:40

At our nativity only one boy wanted to be an angel and so that’s what he is. We asked him again afterwards as he was the only boy but he was happy so we just went with it.

I really don't think kids his age will care. In dds preschool one she rebelled against being an angel, and wanted to be a sheep. They compromised and She was a sheep - angel, basically woolly with a halo on. Grin the kids don't notice!

Kokapetl · 11/12/2018 21:41

We know a boy who is going to be an angel (he will be a adorable one!) in the nativity. My slightly older DS's only comment was that they hadn't got him an angel hat (halo?) for the rehearsal he saw.

headinhands · 11/12/2018 21:43

So sad. The other kids have picked up parents attitudes. They wouldn't think anything of it otherwise. When I worked in a primary school one parent refused to let her son be an angel.
