AIBU?

AIBU to think we can cancel Brexit and just pretend the entire embarassing spectacle never happened and carry on as before

The European Court of Justice has ruled that we can revoke Article 50 without needing consent from the rest of the EU. The EU would love us to stay.

Lawyer David Allen Green tweets
"If Brexit is cancelled, the sensible majority will pretend, with relief, that the entire embarrassing spectalce never happened.

And the minority can have their 'treachery' narrative which, frankly, is all they ever really wanted anyway. Everyone is happy"

What do you think?

Sounds good to me but I doubt it will happen.

I would be very happy with this outcome.
My understanding from news reports in Europe, where I live, is that there is nothing more on the negotiating front from the EU.
I am not quite sure why Mrs. May thinks she is going to be able to change or improve the current "package".

Its not very fair on those who voted and still want to leave though, is it.
Had the vote gone the other way do you think remainers would have studied Brexiteers. No it would have been a care of tough shit we won, now like it or lump it.
Cameron took a risk by giving us the vote, and it back fired, Well not on him like hes fine and dandy with his trotters up.

If only it was possible. It is causing a massive shit storm in Ireland too, the financial implications already.
It is a sorry state of affairs.
The other EU countries are running out of patience and now TM has decided lets fix the Irish backdrop and unite Ireland. Another stall tactic. Most just want it done one way or the other.
Ridiculous carry on. I hope the Taoiseach stays strong and ignores the stalling. Fuck it build the borders, for those who want out let them out, for the remainder you have my sympathy.

I really wish we could just stop this time bomb brexit.
I voted remain and can't believe people who voted leave thought /think it is a positive move but I suppose they believed the lies, we need brexit to stop and the tories out

It sounds like the perfect solution to me, but I don't think the Government is suddenly going to start doing the right thing now.

It would be great but it's like trying to get over an affair.
The EU will never really trust us again (and be checking our phone when we're not looking)

It doesn't need cancelling, we need a complete separation from the EU like the majority voted for. What we're currently being offered is not a complete withdrawal from the EU.

And now the unelected EU overlords have shown their true colours I'm more convinced that ever that we need to get away from that dictatorship.

To be honest, I couldn't care less. It is a madness, I can't understand why we would go through with it when the whole country will be damaged and most people are going to be negatively affected. The country is divided anyway. Even if it happens, do those who voted to leave really believe that remainers will just forgive and forget. I imagine that we'll be re-joining in a few years on far worse terms than we have now.

What overlords? And what true colours? What else would you expect the EU to do?

Report
Janedoe5000 · 11/12/2018 11:25

Also, this might come as a shock to a lot of you but people wanted to leave the EU long before slogans on buses.

There was a referendum for a reason and you'd do well to stop kidding yourselves that everything was fine until campaigning began.

now that the unelexted EU overlords have shown their true colours

What do you even mean by this? I know its been the practice to blame the EU for everything we dont like in the UK but what is it that you think they are doing, or shouldn't be doing regarding Brexit?

This is a mess of the UK's making. Time to grow up and sort it out rather than bleating that it's Brussel' s fault and it's soooo unfair.

We could but we can’t forget and people won’t

Within the EU this was hardly news we are leaving it’s just when and how there is no turning back that shop sailed long ago

KonaMum · 11/12/2018 11:29

As much as it pains me to say it (because I am so bored of the whole affair) the only fair thing to do at this stage is to have yet another referendum based on whatever deal Mrs May get.

I’d love to just pretend the whole thing never happened though! Grin

Very few people spent their time prior to the referendum fretting about the EU. Some got mildly exercised by the lies spouted by the likes of the Telegraph and the Mail, a game started by one Boris Johnson. To this day most people struggle when asked to name the EU laws that inconvenience their lives so much, that it's worth this utter shitstorm to leave.

Erm no... it does not need cancelling. It needs to go through in whatever way possible (No deal fine by me!) like the majority voted for....

That would be great. I would like to get back to normal and confine this utter shit show to the history books.

I genuinely believe that in 100 years it would be discussed in history as the rise of the right/media manipulation.

tirisfalpumpkin · 11/12/2018 11:35

I would have been happy with a remain outcome, but that wasn’t what we got.

Since it was a manifesto promise to hold a referendum and, by implication, act on the outcome, I think not to leave would be so harmful to our democracy as to outweigh the other consequences.

It’s going to be uncomfortable, but ultimately I think we will be okay.
