AIBU?

Is my colleague being greedy...

Sit on a bank of four desks at work, over the last week or so we’ve started having Christmassy treats, chocolates, mince pies etc and put them in the middle area of the four desks. Colleague (we’ll call her Sam) is pretty much eating 80% of it. Yesterday we got a box of naice posh mince pies, 6 of them. By lunchtime, I’d had one, my other colleague had one and Sam had three. I got sent a box of chocolates from a supplier, who Sam doesn’t need to deal with etc, I put them in the middle, opened them at 4pm and had one, Sam had two. Other colleague left at 4.30pm and I went to a meeting. By 5.15 the top layer of 12 chocolates had gone, all eaten by Sam. Would i be unreasonable to put them in my drawer this morning! Of course I don’t mind her sharing, we all do, but she’s pretty much devouring the lot.

There was a similar thread not too long ago- advice was either to jokingly call them out on it (I can’t imagine doing this myself) or putting away and bringing out at teatime etc.

She might have a binge eating disorder and the placement of that food might not be helping her at all.

She could just be eating subconsciously as it's there too, right next to her. Maybe it needs a new home?

YANBU, that's grim.
I'm sure you'll get a lot of "poor Sam...eating disorder... Addiction... Blah blah" as it's Mumsnet but some people are just selfish and greedy.

Or she might just be greedy and selfish.

This happened before to someone else...
They said offer and put them away. Bring out box when you have a cuppa..
Maybe get some cheapo biscuits... £1 for 3 packs and leave them out... So if Sam wants to stuff her face it isn't with the good stuff.

I wish there'd been a Sam in my office when I had a desk job.

I might not have put on three stone in four years Cake

I'd leave her to it. She's doing you a favour.

She is scoffing a lot. Maybe she has trouble resisting if food is right in front of her. I would just not put stuff out if I wasn't happy for Sam to munch most of it. Does she add food to the pool too?

😂 I started a post last week I think it was on a similar thread. Mixed responses from ‘yes, they are greedy’ to ‘what company do you work for that allows you to spend all day gnoshing’. In the end I’ve stopped bringing treats in and stopped eating the treats from others.

I still think that there are some people that can’t control themselves and kick the arse out of free food, but you will get posters who will defend Sam and ask ‘how do you know she’s not living out of a skip, skinning rats to survive’. Be prepared 😂

Yes she is greedy. Fies she contribute to the treats,?

Yes, keep them in your drawer, offer one at a time?

I wasn't being goady or mumsnetty with my responses to be honest. I was replying to the question. I have come across a few people with BED recently and apart from one who would openly eat as your colleague does, I had no idea about the other two. It's a very hidden illness.

She might be all the other things you all say about her though.

I would probably say something when she goes to take a third mince pie "Oh Sam, maybe we should save one for Babara as she's only had one?".

If shes doing it when you're away from the desk maybe it would be better to keep them in your drawer and just get them out at coffee time or when everyone is there.

I am the Sam of our office and do not have a disorder. Just greedy

Selfishly I'd let her eat them - because if they are gone then I wouldn't eat them and they're aren't exactly good for you! On the other hand she maybe can't resist - and once you've had a sugar high then dropped low it's really hard not to eat them again...

I would be hopeless if I had an open box of mince pies or chocs visible in front of me.

Put them all away, bring them out at lunch or tea.

Yes it’s very greedy. I’d offer everyone one individually then put them back in my drawers. Everywhere I’ve worked it’s akways been incredibly polite, people taking the smallest amounts.

It's more common to be selfish/greedy than have an eating disorder, particularly one that is so severe it trumps being a decent person to others.

Not sure of a solution beyond just not bringing stuff in to share tbh.
As there's only the 4 of you, you can't really feign ignorance on who is eating it all (eg. A well placed "Jesus, who do you reckon ate all the chocolate whilst I was in that meeting?!") which would be an approach in a larger office.

I'm addicted to sugar if I have biscuits at home or work I eat them all. If there aren't any around I don't think about them. I would be the same as your colleague it's too simple to say she's greedy maybe she is or she has food issues.

Maybe don’t leave them out if your going to be keeping a tally everytime somone take a choclate .

This is almost the same post as the one with the 'snack Table' (A whole TABLE of snacks for people at work! Shock)

Don't do it! You don't need to eat every ten minutes. Especially chocs, biscuits and pies!

Just dont do it.

Agree with PP if you need to do a tally of who eats what then don't leave them out and stop buying them as you aren't being kind.

I tend to work in offices where there are a few people who do a lot of exercise and then a few others who do absoluty none. Both types have a habit of eating junk food like cakes, biscuits and sweets if they are there because they are addicted to sugar. Their normal office diets don't consist of that many cakes etc.

Why should no-one be allowed to snack just because one person has no self-control?!

We have one of these in our office. Pizzas were bought for staff doing OT, idea being there was enough for 2-3 slices each. Greedy fucker ate 7 slices and was bragging about it even though it meant some people didn’t get enough.

Reps leave me chocolates as I do their expenses. I’m happy to share but often don’t even see the chocs as the greedy shit has opened them before I get to work as I’m PT and eaten all (bar one strawberry cream usually).

It’s annoying but some people are greedy shits, hide your treats and hand out at intervals is my advice.
