Morning drinking

I'm curious to know thoughts on this. I'm completely okay with it but interested to see what people think.

Once and sometimes twice a week at 10am I will crack open a bottle of wine and have 2 or 3 glasses over a few hours. I'll Read, catch up on some tv and other stuff and just relax and enjoy.

I do this because this is the only time I get to myself while the kids are in school and before everyone gets home around 4. I don't drink in the evening or at the weekends. Probably having around 16 units a week.

I know if I was to tell anyone this they'd think I had a problem and needed a drink first thing in the morning, but I don't.It's about 4 or 5 days before I'll have a glass of wine again since the last one.

What are you're thoughts?

It's a very odd drinking pattern lol. Are you sure this is the full story?

Yeah that's pretty much what I think.

Erm, it sounds strange to me but as you are within fairly safe weekly units and not binging then each to their own! My only worry would be having to get the kids from school if they were poorly/had an accident

So you’re looking after DC after school after having the best part of a bottle of wine? Cooking dinner etc?

Candlelights2345 · 24/11/2018 15:06

Yes I’m afraid it appears a bit odd to me too.

Do you not feel hammered? I feel more drunk if I drink earlier in the afternoon, I can't imagine in the morning!

*not judging at all, just genuine curiosity as to what it would be like?

As long as you're genuinely only having 16 units a week I don't suppose it matters if you have them morning or afternoon. So I don't know why it seems a bit weird!

Its weird but doesn't sound like a big deal in the context of how you describe your drinking pattern.

Aren't you drunk at 4pm when the kids get home from school though?

Report
PurpleDaisies · 24/11/2018 15:07

Presumably you don’t drive after that?

I don’t think it’s particularly different to having a couple of glasses of wine with dinner. A bit unusual though. 16 units is a bit more than recommended though.

On the odd occasion, morning drinking is no biggy. Especially things like on holiday or going to a wedding.

As a regular habit though I’d be starting to watch myself.

Oh yes, I have thought of a real issue now ... what if you had to drive the kids unexpectedly to hospital or something?

Report
Hubblebubbletripletrouble · 24/11/2018 15:08

Well I don’t know, units wise it’s not bad, but do you feel fully capable to look after the kids after all that? It’s still quite a lot.

Morning drinking is culturally frowned upon and not “normal” but apart from that it’s mainly the safety aspects that might be a concern.

10am is very very early. That's an unhealthy pattern - and timing - to get into.

I like a drink as much as the next person but even I can generally hold out until the early evening. If I drank the fat end of a bottle of wine before lunch I'd be knackered by 2. Do you find yourself sleeping all afternoon OP?

Report
Mari50 · 24/11/2018 15:09

If I did that i’d be asleep at 4pm when the kids got home from school.
I enjoy a drink as much (probably more) as the next person but I’d never do that....
What would you do if there was an emergency etc at school?

Report
nottellingyou101 · 24/11/2018 15:09

It's the whole story. Kids come home by themselves. 3 glasses. 2 relaxing and one with lunch. I completely understand it's a weird pattern but it works for me and stops me feeling any grogginess in the morning if I were to have 2 or 3 in the evening.

Alcohol use has some pretty firm social rules. You're breaking two of them. Lone drinking and morning drinking. The reason that is a concern is that breaking social norms implies quite a heavy weight of 'need' to drink on the other side.

Things to ask yourself...

Has this pattern escalated in frequency or amount?
Could you deal with emergencies (kid being taken ill at school)?
Why are you doing this?
Do you do it more when stressed/sad/bored/lonely?

TBF in some ways it's healthier than drinking in front of your children. BUT I've worked with people in recovery and once you've broken a couple of social norms it's much easier to break a lot. So be honest and careful.

If you were a friend or relative of mine I'd be very concerned. The fact that you've carefully worked out the optimum time to consume alcohol is troubling. Speaking as an alcoholic, it sounds like you're justifying what's an unhealthy relationship with drink.

I've done it once or twice, mainly on my birthday a d when I wouldn't be driving. It was a slice of cheeky bliss. I wouldn't be able to do it regularly though simply because I'm so bone tired as it is constantly and wine just makes me want to sleep, but I can't as there is always a mountain of everything to get done etc.

My Nan and Grandad used to have a couple of glasses, although their glasses were shot glass size, of sherry every Sunday morning while my Nan was cooking the Sunday dinner. That was the only time they had a drink.

I'm not sure there's anything wrong with drinking in the morning as long as it's a want not a need

Pattern hasn't escalated. Don't drive and not drunk when they come home at all.

What if I met a girl friend for lunch and had 2 glasses in a shorter space of time. Is that socially acceptable then?

I like my own company. Husband in work. I get to do and watch what I want e.t.c

You need to unwind at 10am?

Report
HollowTalk · 24/11/2018 15:16

Oh come on, OP, you know that's not normal behaviour! Can you imagine being called to school at 11 am and smelling of drink? Do you think that's normal or how you want people to see you?

LONE drinking is a criteria now?
Oh purlease. No way.

What about mums pouring a glass of wine at home?
I drink at home, when Dh is out.
Ever seen Micky Flanagan show we he goes to the pub alone, sits alone, for a bit of peace and quiet?
