I really usually enjoy the JL Christmas ad but this year it’s bloody awful!

When did it come out?

EmeryisntthenewWenger · 15/11/2018 06:37

I think it was overnight, I watched it this morning online.

I saw it last night. In the ad breaks in Corrie they had a piano playing instead of the usual theme tune. All part of the build up for what I thought was a very disappointing advert.

Really liked the ending section with his mum- but the rest didn’t have the usual heart of JL Xmas ad.

Blanchedupetitpois · 15/11/2018 06:46

Was very sceptical about the concept but I actually think it works. There is a nice sincerity to it.

isitthehormones · 15/11/2018 06:46

I always look forward to this day, another thing in the countdown to Christmas but I’m not impressed at all.

The Mum thing is a lovely nod to his Mum who passed away recently but it’s not a great ad. I feel like JL have got a bit too big with it now and have lost that magic.

Bring back the Bear and the Hare!!

Tobebythesea · 15/11/2018 06:51

It’s rubbish. So disappointed.

It’s not an ad for John Lewis, it’s an ad for Elton John.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 15/11/2018 06:52

I actually like the advert but not sure I get it as a JL advert but a nice advert all the same and I’ll remem it. I know why the picked that song but I love step in to Christmas.

stopitandtidyupp · 15/11/2018 06:52

I like the concept but the middle bit is just nonsense.
It had so much more potential.

AgathaRaisinDetra · 15/11/2018 06:57

I didn't know John Lewis sold pianos.

Jojoanna · 15/11/2018 07:00

I liked it

bimbobaggins · 15/11/2018 07:00

Exactly what tobey says, with bells on.

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 15/11/2018 07:06

The one with the man on the moon still hits me right in the feelings but not this one. Its like a promo for the Elton John movie coming out next year.

gillyginger · 15/11/2018 07:06

The ending was lovely, have a little tear in my eye,

strawberrisc · 15/11/2018 07:08

Loved it. My favourite ever Christmas ad was by Sainsbury’s though and hasn’t been topped (the Christmas Day football match in no man’s land).

maddiemookins16mum · 15/11/2018 07:12

Awful. I flippin hate Elton Wrong anyway. I’ll stick with the Anchor elephants thanks.

hibeat · 15/11/2018 07:13

Sorry, I absolutely liked it, with a lot of buts : when you have a distinctive voice like Elton you only want to hear his voice from the beginning to the end : it's his narrative, he should own it from the beginning to the end. It's like somebody wanting to copy Attenborough's voice,, will never work. This is when it does not work for me. Keep it simple. And the hairless man, no thanks. But the last three seconds I cried. It got me.

thelonggame · 15/11/2018 07:13

I love it, and I'm not really an Elton John fan.

HurrahMoaningMyrtle · 15/11/2018 07:14

I love it but I love a bit of Elton and especially that song

I love the sentiment behind it

So sorry but YABU

Mrsmadevans · 15/11/2018 07:15

My thoughts exactly OP . To think of how much they must have Paid for this heap of rubbish is criminal. They have really lost their mojo this year. l really look forward to seeing it every year and having a surreptitious cry MEH! l just hope Elton has given his fee to charity.

Desecratedcoconut · 15/11/2018 07:17

I like it. It's better than all those ads with cutesy animals.

I liked it.

I saw Elton John sing about 17 years ago, though, and thought he'd lost his voice then. I'm not sure that's him singing naturally!

Conkernudge · 15/11/2018 07:19

Yes, feel like a tribute to Elton John rather than an advert. Didn’t like it at all. Elton John seems to have a big enough ego as it is without this. He also seems to behave like a complete diva at times and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he’s a nightmare to work for. Defo not giving me the Christnas feels this year...

meepmoop · 15/11/2018 07:24

It doesn't feel very Christmassy. My favourite was the one with the little boy and the penguin.
