To tell my friend he's a hypocrite ?

My friend texted me today to say what a lovely date he had with a Polish woman. He is looking for a genuine relationship.

I said 'well if I were you I wouldn't mention that you voted us out of the EU and try to change your views about the whole thing if you could see this being a genuine relationship'

He replied saying he doesn't discuss his leave vote with 'Europeans'. I think he's a hypocrite.

MonsterTequila Sun 21-Oct-18 22:22:44

What makes you think she’d be a remainer? hmm

Electrascoffee Sun 21-Oct-18 22:26:16

She doesn't have UK citizenship - and hasn't been here long.

I think people don't think through the consequences of their narrow mindedness

Cherries101 Sun 21-Oct-18 22:29:15

A lot of Europeans voted to leave because they stupidly thought it wouldn’t impact free movement. That’s the level of stupidity we’re talking bout when it comes to Brexiteers.

pouraglasshalffull Sun 21-Oct-18 22:31:58

I think your comment was made out of spite and pettiness. YABU- and that's coming from a remainer

OlennasWimple Sun 21-Oct-18 22:33:59

that was a weird comment to make to someone who is supposed to be your friend

Electrascoffee Sun 21-Oct-18 22:34:11

It's not spite at all. I find it deplorable that someone would vote leave without being able to explain why.

He has been trying to meet the right person for years.

BrightLightsAndSound Sun 21-Oct-18 22:34:42

Remainer here.

Stop judging people.

Electrascoffee Sun 21-Oct-18 22:35:54

Well..,we have had a lot of arguments about him voting leave in the past.

I have a EU friend who is genuinely very depressed about the leave vote and daily stuff about Brexit and the U.K. going down the pan as a result. It is affecting her mental health.

LindsayIt Sun 21-Oct-18 22:38:19

You aren't a friend.

You are judgemental and overly hung up on this mans voting choice.

Leave him alone. I think he would be better off without you in his buisness.

MrTrebus Sun 21-Oct-18 22:38:30

Hilarious that brexit is such a big thing to people even in the light of just a date. OP get a grip and keep out of your mates love life especially if you're going to try and poo poo it using brexit. Do you secretly want to break them up so you can have him?

LindsayIt Sun 21-Oct-18 22:38:41

And possibly life

Electrascoffee Sun 21-Oct-18 22:40:07

So I must want him myself just because I can see that if I were in her shoes I would wonder why he wants EU citizens out of the U.K.?

Electrascoffee Sun 21-Oct-18 22:41:05

Yes Brexit is a massive thing. We are all going to suffer for it whether EU citizens or not. I genuinely have sleepless nights about it.

Electrascoffee Sun 21-Oct-18 22:43:06

Btw I didn't actually say to his face that he's a hypocrite. But I did advise him to pretend he's a remainer if he wants this to work out.

What I think is hypocritical is him saying Brexit isn't really important and doesn't really affect anyone.

catlady3 Sun 21-Oct-18 22:46:54

Nah, I agree with you. Maybe hypocrite isn't quite the right word, a lot of people seem to have voted leave thinking we'd stay in the single market etc. It definitely is a bit daft, but what I find most irritating is that he won't discuss his vote with Europeans, what gives. Besides, he's European himself, most likely.

WickedLazy Sun 21-Oct-18 22:48:47

"I did advise him to pretend he's a remainer if he wants this to work out".

Any potential political differences they might have, is non of your business/not your concern. There's a chance she could be more annoyed at his friend telling him to lie, over assumptions she's made, than how he voted back then or his reasons..?

European12345 Sun 21-Oct-18 22:55:15

“A lot of Europeans voted to leave because they stupidly thought it wouldn’t impact free movement”

Just to point out Europeans weren’t allowed to vote hmm

Btw if this polish woman has been here for a while then she’ll be allowed to stay.

I’m an European person and I’m depressed as well because everywhere I look it’s brexit brexit brexit. Nobody knows what’s going to happen and seems like everyone knows the best / worse is about to come. I can’t wait for all these news to be over.

Poloshot Sun 21-Oct-18 22:56:31

Very odd.

AmIRightOrAMeringue Sun 21-Oct-18 22:58:47

Europeans didn't have the vote! Wrongly so imo. I'm not saying gap year students should have had the vote but I know people who have been here 20plus years, paying tax, working, married, have a house and British family and kids...clearly planning to say, but didn't get a vote.

heymammy Sun 21-Oct-18 23:08:43

Am I the only one reading these comments and being flabbergasted by all the "Europeans didn't have the right to vote" comments? Every one of us who voted is a European!

Walkingdeadfangirl Mon 22-Oct-18 00:30:59

What a horrible thing to say to your friend.

Cherries101 Mon 22-Oct-18 01:25:58

@heymammy - my point exactly. Idiots voted to leave and now they complain they can’t go to mainland Europe without a visa. We are all European.

MissSingerbrains Mon 22-Oct-18 03:23:30

Your friend doesn’t appreciate the fact that it’s due to European freedom of movement that he’s been able to meet this lovely lady. As well as the fact that his vote has made her life more difficult and she’ll have to jump through hoops to be able to stay here after Brexshit.

bumblebee39 Mon 22-Oct-18 03:32:52

People can usually separate politics and there personal lives which you obviously can't

Are you sure you can even be friends with a deplorable brexiteer OP?! 🙄
