Ocado siding with misogynists and agreeing that the word "woman" and its dictionary definition is hate speech

Mumsnetters in their droves are abandoning Ocado after they sided with advertising company, Primesight, for removing Standing for Women's billboard in Liverpool. The billboard was a very simple dictionary definition of the word "woman." This has been declared homophobic and hate speech by Dr. Harrop who demanded the billboard be removed.
Since when did the very word, "woman" equal transphobic hate speech?
Posie Parker, the woman behind Standing for Women, was on Sky News this afternoon with Dr. Harrop defending the rights of women and the right to call ourselves women.
Shares in Ocado have gone down today and the company amidst a torrent of cancellations have said they will issue a statement today. So far they haven't done so but all their tweets saying Primesight reflected their company values have been deleted along with the many comments that followed.
Is it unreasonable to boycott Ocado for publicly showing themselves to be against women, who after all are their target consumer group? Scores of posters on the feminist boards don't think so but I'd love to hear the opinions of those outside of the feminist boards.

It's completely reasonable to boycott a company that doesn't agree with your own stance on things. I used to use Ocado (haven't for years) and am not inclined to start using them again on hearing this.

This is the first I've heard of this. What's wrong with that DEFINITION of woman? Although it is a bit passive aggressive posting it on a billboard that way ..... there is a really balance to be had between being inclusive of self DEFINITION of gender and differences in sex.

I also received an email from girl guiding this week about their views on including trans people in guiding and about them banning some decenting voices that had been posting on social media sites. I wondered if it was the guiders/leaders that had been posting on here. I meant to look for a thread about it. Horrible if that is the case.

It is horrible, women, the traditional kind are slowly having their rights taken away and being told to blindly accept this new kind in their place.
Ocado support this.

Completely reasonable. I just checked out my £300 Christmas order on Waitrose site.

I don't care if it's passive agressive or not. We are literally being erased in law and life as what we are and it's being driven by ao far leftwing they actually act right, and mentally ill people who need help, not encouragement.

@Ocadodumped why would you cancel an order with Waitrose when you order direct with Waitrose it isn’t delivered by Ocado

Wonderful, if I could, I would use ocado. Sadly they don't cover my area.

ludo yes it was the Guide leader who was posting on MN. You can read it being reported in the times here -

What is your definition of the word woman @wrenika?

I'm flabbergasted! WTF is going on? I googled it and the twitter page says it does not exist. What has it got do with Ocado anyway? They are no longer going to have my custom.

Watched Posie Parker on sky news catchup and she held her own brilliantly. There's much I'd like to say about Dr What's-his-face but I'm resisting. I'm just sure that he has helped peak trans great swathes of the sky news viewing public. Cheers, mate

Putting that on a billboard is unnecessarily aggressive. Ocado will gain a customer here.

I don’t dispute that you lot have a point with some of your concerns, but the way you go about it is beyond ridiculous and nasty. It just makes me more sympathetic to the other side of the argument.

ManyCrisps Sorry no, I should have been clearer. My usual Christmas Ocado order is now with Waitrose. Checkout is what you do online when you have finished choosing your stuff.

I’m confused, what has Ocado got to do with the billboard?

Putting that on a billboard is unnecessarily aggressive.

And sacking someone for pointing out biological facts isn't?

Ocado need to realise that their customers are women AKA Adult Human Females.

CloudCaptain · 26/09/2018 21:48

Wow. You are early for Christmas orders. Can we even do that yet?
(spectacularly misses point).

Primesite took the billboard ad down saying they agreed it was offensive/transphobic and Ocado immediately tweeted to say they approved of its removal and would continue to use Primesite for their own advertising because they shared Primesite's values.

So essentially if you define yourself as a woman by the dictionary definition of "adult human female" Ocado think you are a bigot.

I think they kind of forgot that probably 80+% of Ocado customers are likely to be adult human females.

The thing that seems to be getting many backs up though is that although they tweeted their support for Primesite within hours they have yet to respond to any of the customers who have contacted them and cancelled, nor have they issued any kind of apology or retraction.

Well why would they? It's just a few hysterical women making a fuss about nothing eh? [angry}

Putting that on a billboard is unnecessarily aggressive.

Telling the truth is unnecessarily aggressive? But Dr Harrop (whose intervention got it torn down) is perfectly OK to go on twitter insulting and being hateful to women...OKaaay.

It is early but I went onto Waitrose to order this Friday's cancelled Ocado stuff and it had the button for Christmas (and Thansgiving and NY). I guess slots will go fast. For Ocado and others you have to wait and depending on your member status you get slots opening in October. But Waitrose don't have tiered member status and slots usually open 3 months ahead of time anyway.

I will certainly amend my order before Christmas, I'm not that organised.

Dr Harrop has been insulting women on Twitter for ages. He doesn't seem to think it wrong to insult women in a really vile way. He however is insulted by dictionary definitions. Primesite and Ocado also seem to be offended by dictionary definitions.

I can’t believe this!

How can someone say that a dictionary definition is hate speech?

And as for “aggressive” I think you mean assertive tillytopknots

Women have every right to define themselves and to assert this definition clearly, particularly when it is under threat.

What’s shocking is that this is even necessary, but the fact that it was taken down completely proves their point!

borntobequiet · 26/09/2018 22:02

Punching someone in the face is unnecessarily aggressive.
Putting dictionary definitions on a billboard is not.
