AIBU?

bags..

In the local supermarkets near me they dont put the bags near the bagging area anymore.
So the checkout assistant (at the self check outs) will be holding them and you have to ask for one. Aibu to find this annoying?! half the time they take 10 minutes to come over as they are so busy helping others. Or some times theyve completely gone off somewhere so no bags. Aibu to find this annoying?! I dont get it so people are trusted with all the items around the shop but are not trusted to pay 5p for a bag?!

I I hate this they walk around with them on their arms, I've started taking my own never thought I would as it's only 5p. But I have no patience waiting 5 minutes for one

I think it's good! By not having them right there to hand, taking one isn't as obvious a choice. It reminds me that I don't really need one, which can only be a good thing. It also makes me more likely to remember to bring my reusable bag, which we should all be doing. There's no real reason that anyone should need a plastic bag in this day and age.

Anything that puts people off using these bags and not bringing their own from home gets a thumbs up from me.

I normally use the bags at home for other things so dont tend to have spares. And yes I do need the bags as my shopping kept falling out the pram because it wouldnt all fit. Not all of us nip in the shop for 1-2 items and not all of us drive either!

That's literally the point - well done for bringing reusable bags and not polluting the environment with single use plastics ☺️

They make it difficult for a reason. You need to bring a bag with you.

It's not a choice between plastic bag and no bag...

So just buy 3-4 reusable canvas bags that pack away really easily. I keep them in my bag all the time now.

This is what you need:

Get a couple of canvas bags specifically for shopping. Screw them up and leave them in your pram or handbag for this occasion!

but the point isnt that your not allowed them its that you have to pay so if im paying whats the damn problem?!

I order my shopping online at tescos sometimes and always get it with bags. sometimes there is only one item in a bag so why do that then but then hide them in the shops?!

It’s to reduce the amount of bags being used.

It is probably also to stop people ‘forgetting’ to scan them.

Because it's a problem for the environment. It's not about whether you're paying for them - it's about trying to disincentivise you from taking one.

If people wanted to use canvas bags they would. I usually use canvas bags but sometime I stop off on the way home after taking the train all the way to London and back for a few things. If I can carry them home in my hands I do but if I can't I will use a plastic bag because there is no way I am carrying around a shopping bag all day incase I decide to stop by the supermarket on the way home. I agree with encouraging people to use reusable bags by putting a charge on disposable ones but this is just going to waste people's time.

Eh? A small pack away canvass bag is too burdensome for you to carry all day? Pull he other one. It is no issue at all to keep one in your bag all the time just in case - I've just weighed mine and it's all of 36 grams. Stop making silly excuses.

If people wanted to use canvas bags they would

It's not as simple as that. Numerous studies have shown that the 'choice architecture' around us affects the decisions we make. The easier something is, and the more obvious it is, the more likely we are to do it. So if the bag is right next to where you're putting your scanned items, you're way more likely to take one that if you have to cross the room and find an attendant.

I agree with deliveries.
they use much too many bags. and totally pointless. as everything is in a crate...

the flimsy shopping plastic bags are useless for anything else. they break too easily and have holes, so not suitable as bin bags.

Why are you using the self service check out if you have so much to buy anyway? Go through a manned till and you won’t hwve this problem. Better still, bring your own and stop being a selfish turtle murderer.

That's not a good argument for why we should relax standards on discouraging plastic bags in shops. So you're saying that because deliveries don't do it, none of the rest of us should bother?

Instead, we should be putting pressure on delivery companies not to use plastic bags! They have crates - the bags are superfluous and unnecessary.

You can opt out of plastic bags when Tesco deliver, because we do - and to be honest you should, because it’s not like you’ve got to carry the stuff home is it! They still send meat and toiletries and stuff in bags, but it dramatically reduces the number you get.

I agree with the previous posters - I congratulate the store for making it harder to use them.

This is exactly why places are making it harder to get them. To stop people using them for convenience and to make you stop and think beyond your little box!

I do online shopping and never have bags with it - the driver just gives me the crate to carry in and unpack myself on to the work tops then I pass it back - simple!

Why not just buy 3 or 4 bags for your shopping when you do go instore and then once you've unpacked at home, put the bags at the bottom of your pram again. That way you always have them with you and won't have to moan about something so stupid anymore
