House guests who ‘don’t eat carbohydrate’

Littlemessymiss · 20/09/2018 10:33

The second time a particular house guest has brought a girlfriend who does not to eat ‘carbohydrates’ in the form of starch/ gluten. There is no chrohns/ coeliac. There is a limit to how many roasted cauliflowers and sweet potatos I can stomach.
We would not have evolved as a species if there was an absence of carb!
WIBU to educate these Americans of the joy of a nice rib of beef with roasties and Yorkshire’s?

Just cook your normal food and serve it up to them minus the carb portion. Do extra green veg.

ektomarie · 20/09/2018 10:38

“We would not have evolved as a species if there was an absence of carb!”

Where did you read this nonsense, back of a cereal box? We survived and thrived for hundreds of thousands of years as a species before we figured out how to make bread.

trulybadlydeeply · 20/09/2018 10:38

I find it the easiest dietary preference to cater for. Just do some extra veg/ salad and she has that with the non carb bits that you are having. A tray of roasted veg is so easy to pop in the oven.

MsHomeSlice · 20/09/2018 10:42

I find it best to question these types of people as to exactly what they do have for meals

ime the No Sugar crew are existing on honey and dried fruits and the No Gluten lot like brown toast and wholemeal pasta. Hmm

I'd be inclined to boil half a dozen eggs and give her that for her breakfast.

Bluelady · 20/09/2018 10:42

So easy to cater for - just serve lots of green veg with plenty of butter or green salad with an oily dressing. Job done, the rest of you eat carbs.

PrimalLass · 20/09/2018 10:44

No Gluten lot like brown toast and wholemeal pasta.

What utter nonsense.

tillytrotter1 · 20/09/2018 10:45

We once had a French exchange pupil, the usual briefing notes, nothing to cause concern. The party were very late because of ferry problems, eventually due around half ten on Saturday night, OH and daughter went to pick her up from the school, he phoned me to tell us she was vegan!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quick calls to every veggie we knew, two weeks of hell.

After the return visit I asked daughter what her mother had given her. 'Ha, she put the meal, always with meat of some sort, on the table and told her to eat what she wanted, apparently she was only vegan for a few weeks!

ScabbyBabby · 20/09/2018 10:47

No-one is denying that processed carbs taste nice but they are probably the reason why there are so many obese people in the western world.

The Paleo diet of the hunter gatherer is why humans evolved so successfully and is what our bodies are made to eat, not Yorkshire puds unfortunately.

Nothisispatrick · 20/09/2018 10:51

Don’t see why it should impact what you eat? Like everyone else said just make extra veg along with your normal food.

cblack · 20/09/2018 10:51

We wouldnt have evolved as a species with the current levels of obesity either Grin

Don't get me wrong, I love a plate of roasties and yorkshire pud, but I feel vastly better eating very few carbs on a day to day basis and think that generally as a society we eat far more carbs than we need for our very sedentary lifestyles. So I wouldn't be bothered by it as a request, I'd just do extra veg.

froufroufoxes · 20/09/2018 10:51

Speak for yourself Grin

TurnipCake · 20/09/2018 10:52

There was a fitness blogger who subscribed to the 'Paleo' diet a couple of years ago. On her plate was a steak, chicken drumsticks, chicken breast, 2 sausages and 2 fried eggs

"My skin is glowing!"

No love, that's sweat. And our ancestors didn't chow down on factory farmed meat a la Tesco

Junkmail · 20/09/2018 10:55

This is why I don’t eat at other people’s house if I can at all avoid it—I don’t eat sugar, carbs, animal milks, meat, the list goes on. But a low carb diet is very easy. Just steam some broccoli for her instead of the pasta, and don’t give her any potatoes or bread. Provide eggs or Greek yogurt for breakfast. Simple.

BloodyDisgrace · 20/09/2018 10:57

When you invite someone round for a meal, don't you ask "is there anything you don't eat/like?" so you can avoid serving them this?
I always do, and I like when people who invite me ask me too. I cannot eat peppers (vegetables) and no way I'm going to get hideous stomach pain from them just to be polite to the host.

I'm sure your food group knowledge can't be as lacking as you're making out? You are aware there is carbs in sweet potato and cauliflower, there is even carbs in cucumber right?

You do understand what a carb is? Confused

Littlemessymiss · 20/09/2018 11:00

ektomarie there is plenty of scientific evidence to prove our brains needed carbohydrate to function. Google “brain evolution carbohydrate”.

I am more of a lentil and vegetable person but I do like making pasta and fresh gnocchi.
What makes me giggle is that they will munch on a tin of cookies that I made for DDs and order puddings when we are eating out.

Doubt it, and it's probably the reason she fits into a size ten.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 20/09/2018 11:01

What does she mean? If she eats sweet potato it’s ckearky not no carbs. Is it just bread, potato and pasta or is flour in gravy included?

How long are they with you?

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 11:01

Where did you read this nonsense, back of a cereal box? We survived and thrived for hundreds of thousands of years as a species before we figured out how to make bread.

I'm sure the ancient cave dwellings show early woman sitting down to a nice cuppa with a sugary biscuit.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 20/09/2018 11:02

Ah well if they eat cookies and pudding they can fuck off. Make what you want and she can eat the bits she’s eating today.

She can fill up on cake if she’s hungry Wink

Agree, it's a mixed up thread. There is no such thing as no carb, it's nigh on impossible to cut them out your diet totally. But someone low carb wouldn't eat potato, what the op seems to be talking about is gluten free.

DukeOfSussex · 20/09/2018 11:02

It is rude to demand certain meals though for non allergic/vegan/ religious reasons though. They should offer to do the cooking.

Bluntness100 love the name.

I cook sweet potatoes/ cauli as they are lower GI than a normal potato so at least I am trying to nod to their idiosyncrasies.

WTAF? You have guests to dinner, and don't ask if they have anything they don't eat and expect them to cook the dinner if they don't like what you're serving?

You can't be serious?

Nubbled · 20/09/2018 11:05

Sweet potatoes contain starch/carbohydrates Confused
