AIBU?

To have a fag in my garden if I want to?

I only smoke in my garden, never in the street or anywhere else. A footpath runs along the side of it adjoining a woodland area. Footpath is a short cut to supermarket, doctors, hairdressers. I smoke in the alleyway at the side of my garden which runs adjacent with the footpath.

I am getting sick of random people making loud comments when they pass by my fence like 'that stink is disgusting, ohh someone's smoking eurgghh' and etc.

WIBU to shout over to the next person to fuck off away from my fence if it bothers them rather than pausing and making comments?

How strange! It’s usually the other way round here. I get all sorts walking down the back of my house, constantly smells of some sort of drug. YANBU! They’re walking on a public footpath, you’re on your own property.

Are you smoking in your garden or not? Sounds a bit confusing when you mention the alleyway.

Yes you can do what you want in your own garden. But smoke doesn't smell nice and if it's wafting over onto other people they might not like it. They are also allowed to express their opinions on the matter because they are in a public place.

Equally you could smoke elsewhere if their comments bother you.

But presumably you don’t want to smoke inside because of the smell - surely you can see the irony.

Well your smoke is crossing into public land, they're entitled to an opinion if they have to walk through it. It would be different if thry came into your house or garden

i'd rather smell your smoke than listen to blaring music as i walked past your garden, just ignore them.it's your choice and it's not affecting them. some people are just so rude.

How is it confusing? Read the post. The alleyway runs alongside the garden.

Op, you’re right to smoke in your garden. Their right to comment on the stink.

Just like if you were playing loud music for example. It’s impacts on passer bys as they walk by and they could could reasonably comment on it

Well it’s not polite for people to be rude to you. And you are correct that you have the right to smoke in you garden...

But cigarette smoke does smell absolutely disgusting. And I don’t want to be breathing in harmful second hand fumes either.

I wouldn’t shout out anything rude to you but to be honest, I’d be thinking it.

Ignore them.

It's definitely not wafting over them. It's just the smell. I smell the same thing when my neighbours smokes.

Alleyway in my garden.

You can smoke in your garden as you please. They can dislike the smoke and say so. See how freedom works?

Second a PP, i’d rather you be smoking cigs than drugs and blasting gabba at full volume whilst loudly arguing with your mates

Maybe if they don't like it, they can go the long way round? It's a microsecond of smelling something you don't like... Get over it.

You are absolutely NBU, op. Dearie me, people need to get over themselves.

They’re probably just annoyed at having to breathe toxic carcinogenic chemicals and carrying the stink around on their previously clean clothes and washed hair, OP. How unreasonable of them. Oh, wait....

I smoke in the alley so my neighbours don't get the smell. It's doesn't affect people passing by. They can just move.

Are you smoking ordinary cigarettes or jazz fags?

I must confess I find it hard to believe that enough people in your town are bothered enough by ordinary cigarette smoke to be shouting PA comments over your fence, to warrant it being enough of an issue to start this thread

It’s either weed, or you’ve got one shitty neighbour.

A lot of non smokers will never be happy until smoking is banned completely. If they have a right to comment, you have a right to say "fuck off". I always try to be a considerate smoker, for example if I'm in a pub garden and can see someone eating I'll either not smoke or move away. But the attitude of non smokers sometimes makes me wonder why I bother. I'm the evil villain whatever I do so why even bother trying to compromise with them?

It's a free country. You're free to smoke in your garden. They are free to complain about the smell.

They're ordinary menthol and it's just about every time someone walks past. Makes me feel on edge Angry.

Yes, and rightly so. Its a smelly, anti social, filthy dangerous habit that kills people, costs society a huge amount of money and has zero benefits of any kind.
Of course it should disappear, its idiotic it hasn't already. Being anti that is a bit like being pro-cancer.

If you take away the word smelly you could say the same of alcohol. Shall we ban that too?

My neighbour also has every right to smoke in his own garden. I never say anything but I still dislike it and feel angry everytime he does it. If he likes smoking so much why doesn’t he go and stink up his own house and family instead of blowing the smoke into mine?

Sure it’s legal but so is expressing opinions about things people are doing that have a negative impact on you.
