Let's reclaim the five syllable word. University. It grates to read MNers talking about their DC going off to "uni" or even about their own time at "uni". Just call it what it is: university.

Why? It's just a shortening of a word...like how you'd say pub instead of public house. I don't think it's that big a deal? Especially online when slang and shortenings are the norm.

Grates on me when my my South African dh calls it “Varsity”, i would much rather hear Uni any day! For some unknown reason Varsity gives me the bloody rage!

We could say "college" instead.

ShatnersWig · 23/08/2018 09:14

I will. If you stop saying "let's" and use "let us".

Oh, and if you stop saying MNers rather than Mumsnetters.

Oh, and if you stop saying DC rather than dear children.

We called it uni 20 years ago so I don’t see why I can’t say it now!

Nah mate, can't. I'm an Aussie and that's what we do - shorten words. It's our cultural identity and what brings us together.

It's uni. Unless you speak without using any abbreviations of course. Weird.

  1. It's quicker to type.

  1. If I called it uni when I was there, why should I stop when I leave? Or are uni students not adults?

I would but we have guests and I am too busy preparing luncheon.

I don't say it but I do write it!! Far shorter to type. So quite likely a lot of the people you are blaming you only come across online and only see the written version
