Noisy hospital ward

I'm bring induced tomorrow morning at 7, sharing a ward with 2 other people. Aibu for wanting the TV off? I'm so tired but can't sleep. Surely people have phones/tablets they can watch shite on. I just want to sleep!

That is very annoying. Does the ward not have a policy about noise like that?

I hate how little is done in hospitals to make them good places to rest and recuperate. It must undermine so much of the good work the staff do. But it will all be over soon. Good luck tomorrow.

I found the maternity ward hellish. One family had some kind of portable burner/cooker thingy and were cooking food behind the curtain. People can be so selfish. Ask them to put earphones in. Good luck tomorrow x

Ask for ear plugs or to move.

Can you move to a day room to sleep?

Just be bloody annoying and they will find you another bed.

I remember how awful that was. If nothing else do you have ear plugs and an eye mask with you?

YANBU but induction wards are noisy anyway what with all the people going into labour and then you're constantly being monitored so just as you drift off somebody comes to wrap belts round your belly or stick their hand up your chuff.

I found the maternity ward so noisy. My neighbour had the TV on at 07.00 with no headphones ( I hadn’t slept at all following delivery at 01.00am), nurses shouting to each other up the corridors “ I’m just off to do Mrs So and Sos medication”, banging doors as they came and went, drilling somewhere in an adjacent ward. All this while ignoring me and my overflowing catheter for hours. I discharged myself and I should have complained but I just wanted to get home. Sorry to be so depressing.... it still pisses me off 6 years later. Good luck for tomorrow.

I really hate to cause a fuss. I have headphones but lying on my side with them is not comfortable. I feel a bit better knowing I'm not being unreasonable.

The lady watching TV is being sent home in the morning. I'm just surprised she thinks it's ok when the other 2 people on the ward are clearly trying to sleep. Doesn't help that it's bloody roasting.

Hi Ponder, most bedside TV's have headphones for durung the night. If not ask the other patient to put them on, or request her to either turn the TV off or walk to the Day room instead.

TV is hanging up on the wall for the whole ward. It's a loud action film too. Checked the TV guide and it's meant to be over at 1. Fingers crossed that will be it.

That sounds crap, I’m sorry OP. I have actually had patients swear at me when I try to provide them with a set of (free!) headphones so they don’t disturb everyone else on the ward. Management say nurses can manage these situations but refuse to put any rules in place that would support us in doing so

I was on a surgical ward recently (unplanned) and barely slept the first couple of nights (I'm a delicate flower!). When I mentioned this to a nurse at discharge she said if I'd mentioned it before they could have given me earplugs as they have a stash of them! Although that wouldn't have blocked out tv noise!! Good luck, hope they pipe down soon.

You need earplugs rather than head phones. Ask if they have some. Even cotton wool might help

I always pack ear-plugs for hospital stays. (Ear phones are less effective and not comfortable.) Wards are not restful places at night.

Ask - they might have some available for you.

Earplugs surely are not an adequate solution. They are fiddly, they fall out, and if they do successfully block out noise then how are you supposed to hear your baby?

Well op hadn't had her baby last time she posted. Presumably she'll be moved when baby is coming.

Archaic system having one TV for the ward (my local hospitals have TV for each patient if they want it, have to be paid for but not expensive, and earphones so no-one else hears).

Ear plugs are a good idea, ask your partner to get some for you.

I'm always baffled when earplugs are suggested, I have isolate ones which are good, but I think even they wouldn't be much help in a situation like this.

how did hospitals become so insane? and pp mentions a group cooking - cooking FFS! Fire risk much?
