To think Chandler and Monica have their priorities wrong in Friends?

I love them together, but they blow every penny of Chandler’s savings on the wedding, and a few episodes later Chandler isn’t being paid and they have to borrow thousands from Joey. It’s unreasonably annoyed me. Why would you spend your entire safety net on one day?! I know I'm over invested.

YANBU. Eejits.

SnugglySnerd · 19/08/2018 12:11

Chandler didn't really want to in the first place. He did it to please Monica who was obsessed with weddings since childhood.

SilverDoe · 19/08/2018 12:12

This has always annoyed me too!

I’m very romantic but the thought of spending all my savings on one day, which is mainly for the guests, sends shivers down my spine. Stupid Monica.

araiwa · 19/08/2018 12:13

Im sure they have some money now, 20 years later

rabbitwoman · 19/08/2018 12:13

They didn't blow all of chandler's savings on their wedding. When Monica found out how much money chandler had saved she was thrilled because it meant she could have the wedding of her dreams.

But chandler wanted to spend the money on a better family home for them, and talked her into being more sensible and she agreed, as the marriage was more important than the wedding

After all, it wasn't a particularly spectacular wedding, was it!??

Rewatching friends has given me such a different viewpoint to the first time I watched it.

Potterfriends · 19/08/2018 12:14

I was disappointed when Chandler backed down over that. Though if I was Monica I don’t think I could’ve resisted going back to Richard anyway.

I don't think they did blow it all in the end though? Did that particular episode not end with Chandler envisioning their future with a lovely house and cats (or dogs, as Monica preferred) then she says she doesn't want a big fancy wedding - she wants a marriage?

I know they still had a big day etc but maybe they didn't spend as much as she originally planned (Wedding Scenario AGrin)

Triskaidekaphilia · 19/08/2018 12:15

Actually it's made really clear that they don't spend it all on the wedding. Monica tells him at the end of the episode that they won't because she wants the marriage and future he describes saving for. Later we see her buy a discount wedding dress etc. Even more over invested

MorningsEleven · 19/08/2018 12:15

Monica was hard work, Chandler was a fool. Ross was a whiny little shit.

I only really liked Joey.

PaulRuddislush · 19/08/2018 12:16

I couldn't understand why joey thought it was acceptable to LOAN them money when Chandler had subsidised and bankrolled his "acting" career for years to the tune of thousands of dollars.

Me too!! The homophobia and normalisation of porn are two things that spring to mind.

Ifeeltheneed · 19/08/2018 12:19

I thought they didn't use all his savings in the end? Didn't he do a big speech about how it was put away for their future and their children's College funds and Monica said that was what she wanted too?
I'm going to have to re-watch that episode now , when I've got so much more important stuff to do on a miserable, grey Sunday Wink

Glumglowworm · 19/08/2018 12:19

Money in Friends is one of those things you kind of have to gloss over tbh. Just a couple of years after that, they’re able to buy a big house in the suburbs and pay $$$ in expenses of the girl who’s babies they adopt.

However, Monica and Chandler both have pretty well off parents. I’m sure Monica’s Dad gave her a Porsche at one point? They definitely have a v middle class vibe anyway! And chandlers mom is a successful novelist. So both have parents that would be able to bail them out of major financial difficulties, although Monica and chandler would hate to ask.

Possibly chandler embezzled millions when he was in his old job worrying about the WENUS Wink

rabbitwoman · 19/08/2018 12:20

What I think is odd is that kids today really love Friends! They are all rewatching it and quoting it.

Could it BE more dated!

They should all be watching Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars.....

PaulRuddislush · 19/08/2018 12:20

I can never get over how truly awful Ross is, he has literally no redeeming qualities whatsoever, how he had a social circle and numerous relationships evades me completely. I'd have crossed the street to avoid him.

Potterfriends · 19/08/2018 12:22

Yes, I’ve just rewatched it and Chandler says he wants to spend all the money, then Monica tells him she wants the future etc. They still must have blew most of it if it was all gone and they were borrowing money a series later.

I couldn't understand why joey thought it was acceptable to LOAN them money when Chandler had subsidised and bankrolled his "acting" career for years to the tune of thousands of dollars. And even then he was reluctant to loan it!

They don't blow chandler's savings on the wedding - that is why they can afford the big house etc. Monica's dad bought the porsche as a mid life crisis then gives it to her out of guilt. Monica's parents can't subsidise the wedfing because they blew her 'wedding fund' on a beach house... I know too much about this 😀

Thatssomebadhatharry · 19/08/2018 12:25

Monica’s folks however paid for two of Ross’ weddings, including half doing up Emily’s parents house in the process.

Impulsesealer · 19/08/2018 12:25

I find it mad how dated it is now when it wasn’t even on that long ago. Social politics have changed so quickly!

KnopeforAmerica · 19/08/2018 12:26

They want to borrow money from joey because chandler quits his job to be an intern at the ad agency for no money.

Amanduh · 19/08/2018 12:27

Well they had the money to buy a house so maybe they didnt want to dip into their savings and borrowed from Joey or Chandlers new job paid really well!
Anyone is BU to criticise friends though as it’s the best thing ever.

Absolutely! It gives me the absolute rage when he wins any 'favourite Friend' polls Angry

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 19/08/2018 12:30

To be fair Joey owed them that money.

mayaknew · 19/08/2018 12:32

The episode where they borrow money from Joey really annoys me it doenst fit in with the narrative of any episodes before and after. Up until that point Chandler is supposed to be loaded ... subsidising joey and saving a fortune ... then after than joey is successful so no longer needs subsidised and a year later the buy a massive house. It's an annoying episode shoe horned in for gags.
