Invited friends round for drinks and dinner. Things were a bit delayed because I was sorting out kids etc. Served dinner, heard a knock at the door my male friend had ordered a takeaway for one and was incensed when we pulled him up on it. AIBU?

He can eat his takeaway in the corner, along with what ever drinks he has brought.

No, of course you're not being U!

That's rude but also really funny! How delayed was dinner? Maybe he was starving!

Really, he did that?Hmm

Bizarre. Have you known him long?

What do you mean ‘pulled him up on it’? Were you not just too gobsmacked to say anything?

How late was dinner? Had you put out any snacks?

Even if you were starving then YANBU and he was v rude. If he was that hungry he should have asked if he could grab some toast to tide him over with an apology/explanation.

We were pretty gobsmacked! Dinner was served at 9. He was given bread and oven chips in between Smile

There’s currently an ‘staying with the ILs and am starving’ thread going on and most of the advice was either to leave or get a takeaway.

How delayed was dinner?

I bet he didn't really want to come in the first place, his wife/partner dragged him along and he's just made sure that he'll never be invited again. Clever. Wink And rude, you won't miss him if you never invite him again.

Bread and oven chips as snacks? I love both and would be delighted with them as a snack but surely crisps/nuts/pretzels/olives are more common!

We’re the oven chips planned as pre dinner snacks? Grin

I would have eaten my own arm by 9 tbh.

He sounds hilarious 😂

What time was he expecting to eat, though? Oven chips makes me think you cooked the children something and let them eat while the guests waited!

HemanOrSheRa · 11/08/2018 22:22

Pfft. I have no idea what is normal any more from reading threads on MN.

Report
Cloudyapples · 11/08/2018 22:22

What time had the guests been there from? If 8/8.30 then not too bad as they already would expect to eat late, but if they’d been there a while and not fed til 9 then you are being a little unreasonable and rude not to have fed them til 9

Report
Shockers · 11/08/2018 22:23

Odd.

Perhaps he didn’t fancy bread and oven chips, so ordered an alternative ‘filler’.

Just out of interest, what did he order?

9 is late to eat IMO. I'm not sure I'd have ordered a takeaway but I might have been looking for an excuse to leave and find somewhere else to eat by that time!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/08/2018 22:28

9.00 p.m. is still within the realms of normal if you're doing 'drinks and dinner' isn't it?!

Ordering a takeaway is awful manners but your thread is titled '...only for himself.' Were you expecting a guest to order takeout for you at your own dinner party? Grin

9 Isn't late to eat at the weekend. It's a really busy time for restaurants. I wouldn't think anything of my friend sorting the kids first. He was rude.

Oh, come ON. Grin
Just been reading the "at the IL's and they're not letting us have any food apart from a pea on toast" (slightly paraphased but you get the gist)
Advice seems to be "run out to Tesco and get your own food or order a takeaway!" is it a piss take of that?! Grin
If you''re actually serious though - right, puts serious face on.
How late was dinner? Did they KNOW they were getting dinner? Had you ambiguously said come round for something to eat and proceeded to just put out a bowl of nuts and a few breadsticks and not much else?!
Maybe they were hungry and pissed off. Even then, I wouldn't have the brass neck to order a Dominos or whatever delivered, the bell go ding dong at someone else's house I'm visiting and go and pay and eat my pizza underneath their nose! Grin

I don't know which is funnier: the takeaway or the oven chip butty as an entree!

Report
ShatnersBassoon · 11/08/2018 22:33

The chip butty amuse bouche is so normal I can't believe you thought it was worth mentioning. I'm guessing he had two rounds of water as well. All sounds fine.

What did he have delivered?

Me either, especially after the Debby post the other day Grin

They wouldn't have ordered a takeaway but I have friends with Type 1 diabetes or specific medications who would need to eat on a predictable schedule. (They tend to keep suitable food on hand in a daypack or similar.)

As you know your friend tho', it's unlikely this was the case and I'd be rather nonplussed at the takeaway if it was known that dinner would be at 21:00 or later.

Just rude, no matter what you did or didnt do. As another pp said he really didnt want to come and has made sure he isnt invited again.

Report

Perhaps he thought that the bread and oven chips was all he was getting by the time it got to 9pm??
