MN is so bloody subjective. It’s impossible to qualify / quantify the audience & responders to a post without some measurable criteria.

MN- I think you are deliberately ignoring this because it suits you.

How much more telling would it be if each poster could be categorised according to the following, as a minimum:

Family income or Socio-economic group
U.K. location

I’m sure there are many other categories.

What do you reckon? Or does it suit MN to ignore this perspective?

Answer to topic:

No OP... It's a stupid idea.. because it's a website, people can lie in their answers so the information is rendered useless.

PickAChew Fri 10-Aug-18 23:55:29

Age: enough
Family income or Socio-economic group: enough
U.K. location: stalk me properly, you lazy shit.

bbcessex Fri 10-Aug-18 23:57:21

Thank you all current responders!

BruceAndNosh Fri 10-Aug-18 23:58:07

Age 92
Socio-economic group= extremely privileged
Income- I'm considerably richer than most
Location - all over the Commonwealth

Despite all this, I'm totally in touch with lesser mortals and definitely know how to make a chicken last all week

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv Fri 10-Aug-18 23:59:03

I live in a place where, to a large extent, you would struggle to tell who lived in the big fancy house and who lived in the pokey council flat. I'm pretty sure we don't follow your expected voting patterns or attitudes.

I'm really not sure what you would have to gain from this information.

Sex - not for a long time but open to offers
Location - currently lying face up in bed
Age - older than I've ever been before
Socio-economic status - doing OK thanks

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot Fri 10-Aug-18 23:59:19

bbcessex Why haven't you provided those details about yourself if you think it's such a good idea?

bbcessex Fri 10-Aug-18 23:59:36

Particularly like the ‘music’ & ‘Pets’ As additional categories!

bbcessex Sat 11-Aug-18 00:10:03

Good point, TheIncredible !

My question came about after pondering a funeral post on Chat.

My credentials:

Age: 45
Socio/Econonic: Middleclass / high income
Location; south east

bbcessex Sat 11-Aug-18 00:11:12

ThisIsntMe - whereabouts do you live?

llangennith Sat 11-Aug-18 00:16:09

Like most people my friends are people who hold similar (though not necessarily political!) views. MN shows me that not everybody owns their own house or has nice schools nearby. It's shown me that other people have similar and different problems at various points in their lives.
I don't want or need to know their background.

Yambabe Sat 11-Aug-18 00:25:50

Nah, fuck that.

Age: menopausal

Socio/Economic status: Don't know what that is. Own my own home and earn just slightly less than I want to spend each month if that helps.

UK location: Cheshire darling, but not the posh bit where all the WAGs are.

Oh hang on, I've just remembered what this reminds me of. A/S/L in the chatrooms of old. Which nobody was ever honest about and just meant if you were female you got sent dick pics.

JaneJeffer Sat 11-Aug-18 00:27:15

In what way would this Information help you?

bbcessex Sat 11-Aug-18 00:37:21

JaneJeffer - feels like loads of ways.

I suppose if yambabes is right and people would lie, then it wouldn’t help much.

But if it could be relied upon, then I could use it as a qualification / ratification. against the poster’s response.

Eg - on the funeral thread, approx 90% posters felt that basic funeral costs of >£2k were something that should be anticipated by the deceased prior to death and planned for.

Just occurred to me that more info about the posters could be helpful to benchmark their perspectives.

JaneJeffer Sat 11-Aug-18 00:39:37

Well I hope you meet your quotas BBC

inquiquotiokixul Sat 11-Aug-18 01:02:50

Family income: £23,000pa
Socioeconomic Group (fallen gentry - plenty of class but not much money)
Gender: not enough time in the world to sufficiently explain
Brexit position: Remainer
Political Leanings: Corbynite
Pets: 2 dogs
Qualifications: MSc in Geology.

Response to OP: what an excellent idea. But please tell me which of the above categories are lies. How would it affect your ability to the my opinion into account to know which ones are lies?

ilovesooty Sat 11-Aug-18 01:04:39

When there are threads asking things like "How much do you earn?" and other similar ones it amazes me how much oversharing goes on given how jumpy posters are about not being outed.

DelphiniumBlue Sat 11-Aug-18 01:13:33

What if we don't want to be categorized or stereotyped?
Are my views more or less valid because of my age or income? Would it make a difference if that income was earned by another member of my household, or due to inherited wealth ,or conversely benefits?
I think most people posting do try to contextualize their replies when they consider it relevant. But it's often not relevant, in which case they don't bother.

AornisHades Sat 11-Aug-18 01:18:07

And you'd verify that how?

JellySlice Sat 11-Aug-18 01:34:53

* I could use it as a qualification / ratification. against the poster’s response.*

Ahhh, I see: prejudice.

BruceAndNosh Sat 11-Aug-18 02:31:37
