Irritating pronounciation

I have just seen the Tesco steak ad and wish that the woman talking would not use a glottal stop in the middle of words. Perhaps this is regional but it sounds very lazy.

Have to admit I find poor spelling more irritating.

As someone with an estuary accent living in the estuary region, I can’t get too het up about the odd glottal stop, but do get annoyed if someone’s just lazily doing it because they’re not opening their mouth wide enough.

The one I hate is “almond” pronounced “aLmond”.... it’s pronounced bloody bastard “aRmond” and it says so in the bloody bastard dictionary.

The L in almond is silent and it gives me rage when people pronounce it.

Nothing shits me more than "neg-oh-SEE-ay-shun" for negotiation. Where on fuck's earth are you pulling an S from?!

Report
RedDwarves · 05/08/2018 00:08

Plus who doesn't pronounce the L in almond??

Many people, in the same way that salmon is "sammon" not "sal-mon".

Which ad? Do you have a link?

Report
Merryoldgoat · 05/08/2018 00:12

YES RedDwarves!

Fucking Theresa May says it all the time and it makes me feel stabby.

I realise I’m lucky to have such trivial problems.

Merryoldgoat · 05/08/2018 00:13

@LadyOdd - how SHOULD she say baguette?

Is she saying BAG-et rather than bag-ET?

Re the pronunciation of ALMOND...

Who would say AWmund? Confused Sounds like a completely different word!

I say it as al-mund Defo pronounce the L.

The way SALMON is pronounced is irrelevant.

RedDwarves · 05/08/2018 00:16

Except that it's not.

Almond
No I don’t emphasise the l
Ahh.mund as in ahhmund latte please

Report
Merryoldgoat · 05/08/2018 00:19

@daisyinatree

Look at my link - you can actually listen to the audio file - it’s clearly a silent ‘L’.

Almond fits in with palm, balm and alms, their all have an ar sound, the l is not pronounced. It really winds me up.

Eemamc · 05/08/2018 00:33

Ok, so I just watched the ad... it’s Sarah Millican narrating. I’m failing to see the problem OP? What is it that you don’t like about the way she speaks?

It’s just different accents and speech patterns mixed with the ability now to watch tv/Internet of people around the world, the ability to travel more etc nobody speaks ‘perfectly’
What annoys me is when Americans prounce Herbs as Urbs.

Yes, you don't say the L but you also don't replace it with an R.

@merryoldgoat

And look at MY link. The L is clearly pronounced.

There is no right or wrong, and anyone who thinks the way they pronounce it, is the 'correct' way, is breathtakingly arrogant.

Personally I think 'ahhhmund' and ARmund sound ludicrous, but I would not be so arrogant as to say you were pronouncing it 'incorrectly, because I don't pronounce it that way! Hmm

And IMO, the way salmon is pronounced has fuckall to do with the way almond is pronounced, no matter how you insist it does @reddwarves

Now how about you stop presenting your opinions as facts? It's making you look a bit twattish.
