Me and DH are married 2 years tomorrow. We have 1DS whose 7 months and I'm 8 weeks pregnant. We are off on holidays this evening and a bloody great fruit bouquet has just arrived as my anniversary gift. My DH explained he thought it would be better as we could take it away with us (we are driving) and flowers would get wasted. I'm really disappointed and think it's such an unromantic gift. I'm also dreading driving in a car on holiday with a grizzly baby and a basket full of rotting fruit !!!

Sorry you’re feeling rotten but I think it’s a pretty thoughtful gift in the circumstances.

Floralnomad Sat 21-Jul-18 15:04:52

I’d give him a break at least he had give it some thought .

After 24 years of wondering if mine has remembered, I'd take the happiness that he remembered and that he tried to put thought into it. And steer him in the directions of things you'd like in future.

It's a nice gift. Yabu.

Why would the fruit be rotting?

DickensianHysteric Sat 21-Jul-18 15:07:16

Oh dear, I would be disappointed too. I like fruit, but not enough to plough my way through a big basket of it on holiday. Could you off load any of it to neighbours/friends/relatives before you go?

Spam88 Sat 21-Jul-18 15:07:42

Well it won't be rotting yet will it.

We just do token gifts for anniversaries, try to stick with the traditional ones. I got a hot water bottle cover for our second 😁

I also think that’s quite thoughtful! Flowers are the lazy, easy, no thought required gift.

WaitingforDaffodils Sat 21-Jul-18 15:08:07

I think this is a lovely gift - obviously thoughtful. Sorry you're feeling rough...maybe gently hint that chocolates would make you feel better?

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar Sat 21-Jul-18 15:08:59

Sounds lovely! What did you get for him?

anotherangel2 Sat 21-Jul-18 15:09:07

I think it is a fabulous gift. What did you get him?

TellsEveryoneRealFacts Sat 21-Jul-18 15:09:32

That's pretty naff.

i'd peel, chop and freeze the lot for smoothies for when I got back - I certainly wouldn't take a huge basket of rotting fruit on holiday and I haven't even got kids.

CheshireChat Sat 21-Jul-18 15:10:21

I think he tried to do something nice, but he simply picked something that's wrong for you.

I wouldn't be annoyed, but I think it's ok to nicely tell him you'd rather have something else next time.

mn101 Sat 21-Jul-18 15:10:47

@TellsEveryoneRealFacts that's a good idea I think I'll do that as it's bloody enormous !!!!

mn101 Sat 21-Jul-18 15:11:53

@anotherangel2 @NeedMoreSleepOrSugar

I got us a lunch at a Michelin star restaurant.

Move2WY Sat 21-Jul-18 15:12:22

Oh that’s such a thoughtful lovely gift. But fruit is a 4 year married theme!

I wouldn’t be too hard on him. I would hate flowers, personally. So it’s a shame hbut he will learn!

Booklover18 Sat 21-Jul-18 15:13:41

YABU - at least he remembered and thought about the fact that you were going away and factored that in. It’s an unusual gift, but a thoughtful one. Make the most of it - you might get nothing after a few years.

itwasallveryfuckedup Sat 21-Jul-18 15:13:43

Sorry I think it's shit. I'd be disappointed at fruit. It's not really an anniversary gift. More like something you send to a sick person.

1sttimeDD Sat 21-Jul-18 15:14:59

You sound incredibly ungrateful.
A gift is a purchase that somebody makes to show that they are thinking of you and, in this case, to celebrate your anniversary.
He has clearly thought outside of the box as you are currently pregnant and several "traditional" gifts eg alcohol would be inappropriate.
I feel sorry for your other half.

YearOfYouRemember Sat 21-Jul-18 15:17:32

What did you want?

mn101 Sat 21-Jul-18 15:17:54

@itwasallveryfuckedup that's what I thought that you sent a fruit basket to sick old relatives !!

mn101 Sat 21-Jul-18 15:18:42

@1sttimeDD I know I do and I'm not proud of sounding so ungrateful- but the thing is I can't get away from the fact I am disappointed!!

Bluelady Sat 21-Jul-18 15:19:15

I'd be delighted, I'd be really pissed off if mi e was stupid enough to buy flowers the day before we went on holiday. Dismantle it and put it in a cool box then it won't rot.

roseandharry Sat 21-Jul-18 15:20:24
