AIBU?

Next door (maybe) stole my crumble!?

Have name changed in case my neighbours are on here and this whole scenario is just so bizarre...

I left a tray of just baked crumble on the garden table to cool about half an hour ago, covered in foil.

Just now I looked out the back window and ... It's gone. The whole thing. The way our terrace works, anyone who wanted to enter our back garden would have to come through five others, and the back wall is too high to climb/jump. So I really doubt an aspiring burglar has made it all the way down without being spotted at this time, then decided all they'd take was a crumble? Which leads me to believe it's more likely to be a neighbour, specifically next door...

To preempt any questions:

  • It isn't in a fancy Le Creuset pan or anything, just a bog standard Sainbury's ceramic tray.

  • I'm home alone and my DH isn't due back until late tonight (plus I have no idea why he would sneak home, hide the crumble and then not come in...)

  • It is far too heavy for a fox or giant bird to move even if they did suddenly take a shine to home baking.

  • Next door are unlikely to be stealing it out of hunger - this is a pretty expensive area to live (we rent but most others here own and they're not cheap), plus plenty of holidays, nice cars etc. Admittedly here I am guessing as I've no idea what their actual financial situation is, but outwardly at least they don't look on the breadline.

So... What the fuck? My AIBU is WIBU to go and politely ask next door if they thought I was covertly leaving them a gift!?

Well apparently I didn't name change. :/

Haha! Go and ask them

Readyfortheschoolhols · 20/07/2018 19:20

Were you on BGT op??

BounceAndClimb · 20/07/2018 19:20

Do they have children who could've easily got in?
I'd go round and ask if they noticed anyone around or have had anything taken, explain about the crumble and see their reactions.

GreasyHairDoNotCare · 20/07/2018 19:21

I want crumble now

nocoolnamesleft · 20/07/2018 19:21

Hmmm. What sort pf crumble? If it was your homegrown gooseberry crumble, then you need to take off and nuke them from orbit. If it was a more ordinary apple crumble, you could maybe just hammer on the door demanding it back.

jainaproudm · 20/07/2018 19:23

I'm almost embarassed - what if it was a crumble burglar and they look at me like I'm a lunatic for knocking on demanding my pudding back!?

Rightio... so you live in an expensive area and you think that because of this, your crumble was worth a punt? Not for hunger reasons, you quickly add - so for what reason? Door stop? Confused

People are strange...

Agustarella · 20/07/2018 19:23

Don't confront them, if you're wrong you'll look like a crazy person and it will be awkward forever.

My ex neighbours accused me of tapping their water supply. If I had any clue about plumbing I'd be doing it professionally, so I wouldn't have to rent a sh1tty terraced house with weirdos for neighbours! Confused

jainaproudm · 20/07/2018 19:24

They do have children - a toddler and a teenage boy. Maybe it was the teenager having a growth spurt?

Oh, it's a joke thread...

ElementalHalfLife · 20/07/2018 19:25

It depends what the crumble filling was surely? I mean, seriously, YADBU if it was blackberry and apple - you've not a snowball's chance in hell of getting it back.

If it was rhubarb then you might get lucky and there'll be some left, I personally love rhubarb crumble but there are some weirdos folks out there who don't.

WhiteCoyote · 20/07/2018 19:25

You certain it wasn’t a fox? They’re very crafty and oddly strong critters.

Agustarella · 20/07/2018 19:25

Maybe he'd seen that movie, American Pie.

happypoobum · 20/07/2018 19:26

OOH!!! My friend had a trifle stolen from her garden. It was in a big glass bowl.

It was her own DDog that turned out to be the culprit Grin

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 20/07/2018 19:26

Was it crimble crumble?
Do you live in a Tom and Jerry cartoon? (They were always leaving pies on windowsills to cool)

Fitzsimmons · 20/07/2018 19:26

I'd go round to ask if they had seen anything and tell them you have CCTV but can't review it till DH is back as you're not sure how it works so you're just doing a bit of preemptive detection work in the meantime. See what they say?

Roomba · 20/07/2018 19:26

Maybe they spotted it there, assumed you'd left it there by mistake, so they've taken it in for safekeeping in case of rain/thieves/birds/flies? Go and ask!

jainaproudm · 20/07/2018 19:26

That's what I mean, @lyingwitchinthewardrobe - why on earth?! I'm beginning to think I've had some kind of blackout and I'm going to find it in a cupboard or the washing machine or something...

I suppose it's equally plausible (/more so, considering) that someone else came down the row on the chance and nicked it - there have been a few burglaries in the area recently so not entirely unreasonable to think someone could have been chancing it. But in broad daylight?

ScrambledSmegs · 20/07/2018 19:26

Surely it’s not crumble weather?

HollowTalk · 20/07/2018 19:26

I really hope they answer the door with crumble on their faces.

quitefranklyabsurd · 20/07/2018 19:27

Why did you put it outside to cool down? Surely on the side would have worked just as well.

I would go and say "Have you been looking out of the window at all? I left a crumble outside to cool and it seems to have disappeared. I can't think what on earth could have happened to it."

And then see what they say or if they have custard round their mouths.

speakout · 20/07/2018 19:27

What kind of crumble OP?

Cherry crumble is lovely, peach works well too.

jainaproudm · 20/07/2018 19:27

It was apple - not very exciting. I'm just going to go and ask them if they spotted anything, the worst that can happen is they think I'm a nutcase (which I feel like right now). And at best they've taken it in for safekeeping away from a crafty fox...
