AIBU?

Porridge for breakfast yet sick hungry by 9!!

Probably not the right topic but not sure where else to put this.

I have porridge for breakfast with skimmed (lactofree) milk and golden syrup. Cup of tea with the same milk.

I have porridge as following a low FODMAP diet for ibs. Can't eat gluten free bread as makes me feel sick. Sometimes I add chia seeds for extra protein.

I eat around 7.15-7.30 and then walk (I don't drive) the kids to school. It's over a mile, involves 2 big hills and I'm pushing my 3 year old in his buggy. The school run accounts for 5 miles of walking a day.

By the time I've dropped them off at 9 my stomach feels hollow to the point of feeling nauseous. I thought porridge was supposed to be really good at keeping you full!

I'm breastfeeding but only morning and night mainly so twice a day and have put weight on since dropping the number of feeds so don't want to be eating more.

AIBU to expect my breakfast to keep me from feeling hungry for more than 90 minutes??

How much porridge do you eat?

You could up the protein of the meal by having half oats and half oat bran in the same bowl. This will take longer to digest and might serve you better ?

Sounds wierd but can you eat later?

I get this whatever breakfast I eat. However if I wake up, have some water and eat breakfast at 9 I'm not hungry before or after.

How much porridge? Do you think you're having a sugar spike and drop from the golden syrup?

Im very similar to you op. I had a black.coffee.and porridge with a banana, chia seed and flaxseed. Had that around 7am and I'm not hungry. I'm trying to cut out my morning snack with little success. Baby is ebf as only 5 months but I've always been the same

Add some more protein - handful of nuts in with the porridge.
Or ditch the porridge and have something like scrambled eggs with ham or cheese. Protein generally keeps you fuller for longer than carbs

Get rid of the skimmed milk and use full fat instead.

Get rid of the golden syrup and use fruit instead. Bananas are particularly. Use honey instead of golden syrup if you must, but add fruit.

When I used to run a couple times a week I found apples really good for topping up the energy levels in between meals.

I mix in quinoa with steel cut oatmeal (think that’s what it’s called). It takes a while to cook (30 mins low heat), so I tend to cook a big batch on a Sunday and then take some out to reheat with whatever stuff I fancy in it. It really fills me up in a way the rolled oats I used to eat didn’t.

Full fat milk.

No golden syrup, nuts instead and some whole fruits eg berries/kiwi/apple...Also I prefer using whole oats rather than the mixes that you put in microwave.

I find that if you ignore hunger like that for 30 mins or so it goes off and you feel fine again after a while.

@reddwarves she’s doing low
Fodmap so cant have bananas or honey. She also won’t be able to have certain nuts either.

Could you maybe just have a bigger portion? It’s better that then being ravenous and snacking throughout the morning. I get protein powder to mix into mine (the vegan ones are often ok for low fodmap).

She also can’t have apples to those suggesting it. I did a low fodmap diet before and it’s so restrictive but it did really help my IBS so stick with it OP

I can't have apples, honey or things like dried fruit due to the ibs diet. Can't abide full fat milk at all and don't eat eggs.
If I don't eat within half an hour of getting up I feel very sick and faint so can't eat later. Single mum of 3 so breakfast needs to be fairly quick to make
I'm intrigued by the steel cut oats.

I thought porridge was supposed to be really good at keeping you full

Well people keep saying that and maybe it does for some, but it certainly doesn't for me. If it doesn't work for you, try eating something else?

Are you actually hungry at 7.15? Could you have breakfast after the school run, or take something portable to eat before you set off back? Boiled eggs would be good if you like them (I don't, but will take egg sandwiches to eat at work - but it sounds like you are avoiding bread, so might not work for you). Cheese and oatcakes?

Or maybe you need a more calorific breakfast and make up for it by eating less later in the day. The 'normal' way of eating with small breakfast, light lunch and big dinner doesn't work for everyone. I prefer to do it the other way round with a big late breakfast, normal lunch and light dinner.

Sorry, missed your last post about not liking eggs and being hungry first thing.

Try replacing the golden syrup with something else.I keep frozen mixed berries in the freezer and defrost a handful to put in top of my porridge then a big blob of natural yogourt or skyr.Very tasty and fills me up.Whereas the syrup on porridge only seems to make me hungrier. Something to do with spiking your blood sugar then it crashing back down I think. Also second eggs.Scrambled or poached on a slice of Rye or sourdough keep me feeling full.I tried going bread free but I have a very active lifestyle and need some cards or I'm permanently famished.

I have this problem with muesli and porridge - if I have them for breakfast, it feels like they’ve scoured out my stomach an hour or so later.
More fat might help, or lower fibre options. Are you using instant porridge? It’s not as heAlthy, but might keep you fuller for longer if you’re like me.

Its probably as high in carbs

could try greek yogurt or eggs instead

Use oats or oatmeal not instant porridge. Skip the syrup.

Full fat Greek yoghurt and berries if you can have that. I was sceptical but it keeps me full for ages.
What time do you eat last at night. Are you weak first thing because not eaten for 12/13 hours. Maybe try a snack before bed so you are not so ravenous first thing.

I use a half cup of rolled oats with 1 cup milk. There's a limit to the amount that's ok on the low FODMAP diet and a half cup is the maximum. Quick oats aren't good on low FODMAP.
The chia seeds should help me feel fuller for longer but have found they give me horrendous stomach cramps if I have more than a quarter teaspoon. The diet makes it so much harder but my stomach is in such s mess that I need to do it. Unfortunately nhs dietitians are overstretched as it is so getting referred isn't easy although I'm going to push my GP on this as really struggling.

Sugar does not help in making you feel 'full' - it does the opposite. Sugar spike then cravings.

So you need to ditch the syrup.

Sorry but the answer for me would be to have full fat milk and no sugary element - but you say you don't like full fat. I imagine you're also going to say you can't do porridge unless it tastes sweet...

Honestly, I would try and retrain those taste buds, not just for the porridge/breakfast issue but for the whole losing weight/healthy eating thing. There's no way around it - if you can become less sugar focused, if you can learn to happily eat things that don't taste sweet that will really really help.

I am not mad keen on a boiled egg but if I have one at breakfast (made day before so instant!) makes a vast difference to how I feel.

And skimmed milk may just as well be water. Even semi would give you some more 'filling' fats.
