Paper in the work printer

People at the office refuse to fill up the printer with paper and it pisses me off! If it runs out while they're printing they'll add a tiny amount so there's just enough to finish off what they want to print. Why can't they just add a whole stack? It's literally exactly the same process.

And god forbid anyone would ever make the trek to the store room if we've run out of reams of paper near the printer.

I would have my own secret stash of paper in my desk and just put in whatever I needed when I needed it, then have urgent business in another room whenever the dry of 'there's no paper in the printer' goes up.
Unless it's in your job description to top up the printer, in which case you'd better do it.

It's definitely not in my or anyone elses job description to top up the printer when it runs out of paper. It's just basic common courtesy! We get deliveries of loads of boxes full of paper which are stacked right by the printer (with spare in the store room). It's hardly difficult or time consuming to get a ream of paper from a box and shove it in the printers tray. Why take just a few sheets - anyone who does this please let us know why!

And yes on the paper jams!! It's not that hard!! The printer even gives you instructions with diagrams on the little screen.

If I kept my own stash I'd need a whole extra desk the amount of printing I do.

It’s the opposite at my work there seems to be an endless supply of paper at my job which always baffles me as I have so many stupid colleagues who have no common sense or curtesy what so ever 🤔

And then there are those who take the last photocopy of something and don't go and make more copies for the next person coming along, because they are in a hurry. Well, guess what? The next person will be in a hurry, too! It's like putting the next loo roll on the holder when you've taken the last sheet.......

The last school I worked at used to issue each member of staff a pack ( 1 ream) at the start of each term and deliberately left the printer empty. The idea being we just print what we need (exactly) and they could track which depts used most paper. (They did have codes but we all knew each others anyway because they CC'd everyone on the email giving us our codes).
Science Dept v English Dept - paper wars. Staff used to kidnap paper left lying around and everyone had hiding places for their paper.
Because teachers have nothing better to do.

We have notes by the printers asking people to put a whole ream in, as if you leave an opened packet it goes damp-so what do people do?

Our printer is an all singing and dancing one that even orders its own ink.
But people seem incapable of changing the cartridge, filling with paper or sorting out paper jams. Even though the printer tells you how to do it!

I hate it when the networked printer/photocopier is on the blink BUT NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING!!!

Multiple attempts to print something out and nothing, before someone passing the copier room and hearing you swearing says "Oh yeah, it's not working. We've had to call the engineer. He's coming tomorrow."

I really love the way people at my place will walk PAST the stock room (where extra paper, toner etc are all kept), to come and tell me that the copier is out of something! And of course, if there is a paper jam the right thing to do is just walk away from it, don’t clear the jam, don’t tell anyone about the jam, just leave it for the next poor sod to deal with even though the jam was caused by you putting a stapled document in the feeder......

Unless it's in your job description to top up the printer, in which case you'd better do it.
What sort of place do you work at where top up the printer needs to be put in a job description.
I work for a big organisation where everyone from CEO to entry level admin would put paper in a printer if it was empty. Do people really not do basic things unless it’s explicitly written down that it’s expected of them.

I have worked in many jobs involving photocopying stuff and generally dealing with the photocopiers needy requirements but it was never mentioned in any job description. 🤔
To think I could have got away with it all this time.

Now you mention it, fixing the jams and making sure we have paper in the printers isn't in my job description...

Why do I bother?

Oh yes, because we need the printers. I remember now. Thankfully everyone keeps the printers topped up, but I do seem to be the only one capable of fixing jams

Our former office manager had "watering the plants" in her job description, there were about 4 of them in 3 offices. I have never known anybody to be quite as irate as her about something like that. Every Friday afternoon she'd come in with an enormous watering can and put the tiniest drop of water into each pot while looking utterly pissed off.

Good gracious. If that is your biggest worry......
Raise it in a staff meeting and ask people to top it up fully. Suggest an additional spare ream or two is kept close to the copier.
Keep a ream in your desk drawer and always take some with you when you need to copy.
Our offices don’t have anyone to fill printers specifically. Everyone has responsibility for these communal housekeeping tasks from CEO to legal services and back to business support and analysts. Just as everyone has responsibility for putting the milk away and loading the dishwashers with their mug.

Yep. So you clear it, wait for their job to print out and then they don't even say thanks when you deliver their (sometimes-confidential-that-anyone-who-bothered-could-have-picked-up) paperwork.

Yes yes everyone else seems to do this. Adds half a ream and leaves the other half lying. It's literally designed for a while ream just put it al in.
