I paid for a school trip (not expensive) and ticked the box for the school to prepare a packed lunch for DD. this was optional but we choose it.

On the day DD was recovering from a sore throat. (had little if anything to eat the day before only managing soft fruit) The trip would last the full school day so I popped a banana, 2 small oranges and a couple oat bars (dds request) into her bag. They all have water daily. This was to ensure she had at least something she could eat if whatever was in the packed lunch was hurting her throat and also as a breaktime snack. Again if the oat bar hurt her she had a choice of fruit.

DD came home upset as she had not been given the packed lunch by school as she already had food in her bag. aibu to think school should not have withheld the packed lunch that was their duty to provide. DD's throat was fine. The back had been pre-packed the night before and we were not even sure if she would be attending the school trip at that point.

I do not think what I put in her bag could be seen to be a 'packed lunch'. No way would I have sent her with that if it had been.

If that is definitely what happened then they are wrong. First step is to hear schools side and then decide what to do

Sirzy · 24/06/2018 20:08

Did you not explain to School?

That sounds like a lot of food to send as a “top up” so can see why it caused confusion if not explained.

Myotherusernameisbest · 24/06/2018 20:08

That's pretty poor of the school. Perhaps a genuine mistake but what you packed certainly wasn't a lunch. Was it all in a lunch box and at a glance could have been mistaken for a packed lunch?

KindergartenKop · 24/06/2018 20:09

They might have asked who has food. Or maybe she thought it was a full lunch.
Ask the teacher before going mad at the school.

QueenArnica · 24/06/2018 20:15

I don’t really understand because if your dd’s sore throat had persisted you’d have been happy for her to have just the food you gave her. Just be happy she felt better, by all means check with the teacher. No teacher (I am one) would deliberately not give a child their pre ordered packed lunch.

LilQueenie · 24/06/2018 20:16

I asked DD but she said she was getting confused as could not remember what happened. The food was just placed in her bag. If the school asks you to tick a box saying yes please provide a packed lunch for my child I expect her to get it. Dd basically went 24 hours without decent food.

I don't see why they would question it either.

Like others have said, that's a lot of food. I'd wonder why you'd packed oat bars if she'd had a sore throat because soft bread and a sandwich filling would have been easier to eat and healthier too.

InTheLightOfTheMoon · 24/06/2018 20:18

I can see why they got confused tbh. You should have mentioned it in advance.

cloudyweewee · 24/06/2018 20:18

They should have given your DD the lunch.

Thehop · 24/06/2018 20:18

Ask her teacher and see what happened

gamerwidow · 24/06/2018 20:18

Your Dd did not go 24 hours without food she at worst missed lunch unless you failed to give her both breakfast and an evening meal too.

MissEliza · 24/06/2018 20:19

Ask the school why they didn't provide her with a lunch.

LilQueenie · 24/06/2018 20:19

Arnica if she had been able to try the food at least I would be happy or else I would have sent a packed lunch with extra soft fruit on the off chance to stop her going hungry. the point is I would have been happier if the fruit had been left uneaten and she had eaten the lunch itself.

Myotherusernameisbest · 24/06/2018 20:19

If the food was loose in her bag then it's very poor of the school. You ordered a lunch so she should have received one. Poor love, bet she was hungry when she got home, especially after not eating much the day before. Hope you cooked her a yummy tea. Smile

Anasnake · 24/06/2018 20:19

24 hours ??? Thought it was just lunch ?

MaisyPops · 24/06/2018 20:19

Sounds to me like miscommunication. Call the school to see what happened. I would imagine they saw a child eating lots of packed lunch food and thought they were eating a pack up.

Given you'd already decided that the food you sent was enough for her for the day if she didn't get on with the pack up, I'm not sure how reasonable it would be going down the route of suggesting they meant she didn't get enough food.

Give them a call and have a chat.

Purplestorm83 · 24/06/2018 20:20

24 hours without proper food?!? Surely she had breakfast before going on the trip?

FlatTopVera · 24/06/2018 20:21

Tbh I wouldn’t expect a parent who’d requested a lunch to send ANY extra food in.

QueenArnica · 24/06/2018 20:24

It’s QueenArnica actually Wink
The reality is she didn’t go without food for 24 hours unless as a previous poster said, she didn’t have breakfast or dinner. Your dd herself said she’s confused about what happened. Did she eat the fruit and cereal bars you gave her?
School trips are a headache at the best of times, just have a polite word with the teacher if it’s still bothering you tomorrow.

LilQueenie · 24/06/2018 20:24

Your Dd did not go 24 hours without food she at worst missed lunch unless you failed to give her both breakfast and an evening meal too.

She ate nothing the day before expect a few bits of soft fruit after her lunch around 12ish (if she ate it) I was all for keeping her off school the next day but she pleaded to go. She ate a small orange for breakfast. 24 hours had passed then she wasn't given a packed lunch. She is actually entitled to free school meals which annoys me about this even more.

I don't fail to feed her.

I'll see if her teacher knows what happened tomorrow.

So she was so ill you nearly didn’t send her at all yet you didn’t think to talk to the teacher to explain? Confused

LilQueenie · 24/06/2018 20:25

Myotherusernameisbest. Oh yes she had the full (veggie) roast with trimmings. Her fav.

Sirzy I did mention to a teacher that she was better apart from the sniffle she still had and to ask that she didnt get too hot being somewhat bundled up. She feels the heat easy. The same sniffle she came down with the day before when she was in the wind wearing only a tshirt and leggings for sports day. and yes I had provided her with a jumper and a sports jacket. how hard is it for a teacher to ensure a child has adequate clothing on before doing outdoor activities Confused

ReadytoTalk · 24/06/2018 20:30

Why on earth would you send a child who hasn't eaten for a day on a school trip? She was clearly too ill to go if all she could manage for breakfast was a small orange. This is you're fault not the schools. She shouldn't have been on the trip.

MaisyPops · 24/06/2018 20:31

Sirzy
It happens more than you'd imagine. And not just with snuffles and sore throats.

I've had students on outward bounds trips and they've revealed that they'd recently injured themselves (whilst in pain from doing activities). It would seem that when we ask for medical info including injuries, it means 'don't tell us'.
