I think it's way over the top too. Cultures have always borrowed from each other. That's how they spread.

American culture is full of examples. I live in a town with a Dutch name. The next town over has an English name. The one south of us has a native American name.

The only time I recall being a bit irked was during the time when Goth was all the rage with teenagers the girls used to wear these massive Gothic crucifixes when most of them were probably not Christian. As a fairly devout Christian that bugged me a bit, but I never would have said anything about it.

It's got something to do with the oppressing culture taking something of the oppressed culture without acknowledging or respecting the oppressed culture.

I don't agree with it. I, personally, see it as another thing for the chronically offended to be offended by.

All cultures, since humans grew hair from their heads have worn braids of some description. Egyptians often wore braids similar to the ones Kym is wearing.

Cultural appropriation has been going on since the Ancient Greeks.

And historically oppression has been practiced by black, white, Arab, East Asian and indigenous American people. It just suits the current political agenda of the sort of people who peddle this stuff to pretend it’s only ever been white people. It never was. For example it’s an indisputable fact that Muslims began the African slave trade.

I saw a different article a while back where a girl went to her prom in a traditional Chinese dress. It went viral as she was accused of cultural appropriation. I was mortified for this girl.

My daughter loves dressing in cultural dresses. The idea of her going out and getting stick for it really annoys me!

The scale of slave trade is irrelevant when condemning slave trading. It’s like saying you’ve only stolen a few things. It’s wrong or it isn’t here. And don’t get me started on the idea that any credit for abolition that the UK organised is lost as some nutcases says crimes continue down the generations. How come that doesn’t apply to everyone else?

I think it has something to do with when a white person does something that an oppressed race has done for years and suddenly it becomes cool because a white person does it. I.e black person with braids oppressed and not able to wear their hair naturally as looked down on. White person does it and suddenly it is the coolest thing ever.

Current estimates are 12 million for the US and European slave trades and 23 for the Arab trade. So no, not comparable. Because the Arab one was so much bigger and lasted much longer.

Oh yes. And the image that they were all living peacefully in harmony with the land is not true either.
