AIBU to be totally annoyed by cultural appropriation.
I read this today and though wtf!

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/newsbeat-44572555

I’m not a fan of kim but if she wants her hair in braids she can have her hair in braids?

Shouldn’t this be praised rather than attacked?
Is eating pasta cultural appropriation?

Exactly op. No-one accuses Beyonce of cultural appropriation when she wears straight blond hair/weave!!

I think it's way over the top too. Cultures have always borrowed from each other. That's how they spread.

American culture is full of examples. I live in a town with a Dutch name. The next town over has an English name. The one south of us has a native American name.

The only time I recall being a bit irked was during the time when Goth was all the rage with teenagers the girls used to wear these massive Gothic crucifixes when most of them were probably not Christian. As a fairly devout Christian that bugged me a bit, but I never would have said anything about it.

Traditionally, the people with blonde hair haven't been the oppressed, they've been the oppressors...

@starryeyed If a culture has been ‘oppressed’ then shouldn’t they be proud that people are now embracing their cultures.

It seems like a contradictory argument.

So appropriating is okay if you feel aggrieved or victimized? Can I then as an Irish American woman appropriate Meghan Markel's fashions? Oh wait, is she an oppressor now or not?

It's got something to do with the oppressing culture taking something of the oppressed culture without acknowledging or respecting the oppressed culture.

I don't agree with it. I, personally, see it as another thing for the chronically offended to be offended by.

All cultures, since humans grew hair from their heads have worn braids of some description. Egyptians often wore braids similar to the ones Kym is wearing.

Cultural appropriation has been going on since the Ancient Greeks.

And historically oppression has been practiced by black, white, Arab, East Asian and indigenous American people. It just suits the current political agenda of the sort of people who peddle this stuff to pretend it’s only ever been white people. It never was. For example it’s an indisputable fact that Muslims began the African slave trade.

At the centre of it there’s a valid point, but it’s run way out of control, redic. Kim - where your hair in braids if it pleases you!

Is this not breeding more racism and hate?

I saw a different article a while back where a girl went to her prom in a traditional Chinese dress. It went viral as she was accused of cultural appropriation. I was mortified for this girl.

My daughter loves dressing in cultural dresses. The idea of her going out and getting stick for it really annoys me!

Hmm, the slave trade operated by Muslims wasn't really comparable in scale to the slave trade operated by the British and the Americans though.

Native American people regularly held war captives as slaves. They were both oppressors and oppressed.

Ah, glad it's not just me!! Don't understand why it's not OK to "borrow" a hairstyle from another culture if it's not done disrespectfully. As you say, nobody is suggesting we shouldn't eat Italian food

The scale of slave trade is irrelevant when condemning slave trading. It’s like saying you’ve only stolen a few things. It’s wrong or it isn’t here. And don’t get me started on the idea that any credit for abolition that the UK organised is lost as some nutcases says crimes continue down the generations. How come that doesn’t apply to everyone else?

10% of inhbitants of the Roman empire were slaves....

Every African slave was sold into slavery by another African

every single one of us is descended from slaves, and from slave traders, every single person on Earth

It is ridiculous to say someone of one colour or creed is more likely to have been descended from oppressors than someone of another colour or creed. We all are.

I think it has something to do with when a white person does something that an oppressed race has done for years and suddenly it becomes cool because a white person does it. I.e black person with braids oppressed and not able to wear their hair naturally as looked down on. White person does it and suddenly it is the coolest thing ever.

Hmm, the slave trade operated by Muslims wasn't really comparable in scale to the slave trade operated by the British and the Americans though.

Current estimates are 12 million for the US and European slave trades and 23 for the Arab trade. So no, not comparable. Because the Arab one was so much bigger and lasted much longer.

Oh yes. And the image that they were all living peacefully in harmony with the land is not true either.

In South America in particular they had a particular penchant for mass human sacrifice including children, sometimes tens of thousands of people in a few days.

@sweetaudrina black people have been relaxing their hair for years. Does it really matter? People should have free choice!

Have we really become so PC that we now can’t walk into a clothes shop and choose what we want to wear without thinking it may offend someone?

Next week I’ll be walking into Sainsbury’s and be refused poppadoms.
