To think asking EU nationals to pay £65 pounds is disgusting

They moved here without these rules and all the money will go on is just continuing as they are.

It's just asking for money to be them! Not on at all!

It’s an admin fee- cheaper than a passport.
Applications have to be processed and that costs money, so it’s inevitable.

Sirzy · 22/06/2018 11:14

I think it’s going to cause chaos expecting everyone to reapply at all. Very much at risk of ending as another “windrush” if we aren’t careful.

mostdays · 22/06/2018 11:16

I'm surprised it's not higher, but I do agree with you.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 22/06/2018 11:17

It's awful. Plus it doesn't even get them back to the position they were in before, prior to this monumental fuck up.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/06/2018 11:17

Sirzy yep agreed the process will be far from efficient knowing this country

pointythings · 22/06/2018 12:05

If I could be sure it was a once only thing, if I could believe the system would work, if I were sure my rights would not be chipped away at after the UK leaves - then I would grudgingly accept it, though I suspect the government would be getting a profit. They have been shown to make big money from citizenship and IRL applications. But I don't believe any of what I said above will happen. And I am an EU national. I am also a UK taxpayer.

mindutopia · 22/06/2018 12:06

Well, I’m a non-EU national and I’ve paid about £8000 in fees to live here in the past 7 years, including £2300 in one go on my most recent application. I’m settled, work, married to a British citizen, have kids in school, pay all my taxes like everyone else. The fees weren’t as high as they are now when I first moved here either and I suppose that’s a bit unfair, I guess, but I’d fall all over myself to pay only £65.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 22/06/2018 12:09

Would you also "fall over yourself" to pay when you previously didn't have to, and when paying would grant you fewer rights than you previously had had without the need to pay?

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 22/06/2018 12:14

Many countries have this rule.

They also use the NHS which is free when entering, so in a better position than if I say, moved to the USA.

It would be nice if they didn't have to and I have no idea how they are going to actually apply it - but they are, so...

EarlyBird39 · 22/06/2018 12:15

Where is this info coming from? Shock Does anyone have a link, please?

craxmum · 22/06/2018 12:22

I am a non EU national as well and in addition to what @mindutopia said for the basic visa fees I am also paying £200, to become £400 a year for my NHS surcharge (my private health insurance through the employer's scheme costs less, but does not count) and £1000 a year for 'skills surcharge' for being unfortunate enough to be a highly skilled professional, on a shortage occupation list. Well, technically, the employer pays it and then charges it against my salary.
£65 feels more than reasonable.

steppemum · 22/06/2018 12:25

Dh is Dutch, and has lived here for 9 years, worked, etc.

We are quite happy with £65, as long as it gives him a right to remain. The worst option would be £65 and then you got nothing in exchange. permanent right to remain, or UK citizenship is the ideal.

It is only about the cost of a passport, and so not unreasonable.

AnnaT45 · 22/06/2018 12:27

I am a non eu national. Been here since I was a teenager, pay a lot of tax,NI etc.

I have to pay £1300 to be a citizen, I'd be ok with £65.

craxmum · 22/06/2018 12:30

@HaroldsSocalledBluetits
That's exactly what happened to Non EU fees and rights. There are people on 10 year route to settlement who paid £X00 for their first application, and £X000 for the last, and are then looking at around five-ten grand for a family to naturalise as British (or alternatively continue living on "windrush" rights, i.e. ILR).

ISaySteadyOn · 22/06/2018 12:30

What the other non EU immigrants said.

nervousnails · 22/06/2018 12:30

SO you are Ok with Non-EU nationals paying thousands of pounds for their visas? Why are EU nationals so special? Because of their race?

Helmetbymidnight · 22/06/2018 12:31

Lots of people hated the EU because of 'too much bureaucracy'. I think its going to be funny to watch their stupid little faces.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 22/06/2018 12:31

Of course it is disgusting.

EU nationals came here, knowing that they could live and work on the same terms as British nationals - there was no cost to register or to stay. This is suddenly changing. In order to stay, EU nationals have to pay.
The cost itself is not an issue IMO, it's the fact that in order to keep living here, there's a new requirement to apply and pay.

As far as I understand, this is a requirement for all EU nationals, no matter if they already have indefinite leave to remain or permanent residency.

Surely non-EU nationals have been fully aware of the terms and costs of moving to the UK, including getting a visa and so on, even before they moved here.

20nil · 22/06/2018 12:32

Race? Seriously?

Helmetbymidnight · 22/06/2018 12:34

Why are EU nationals so special? Because of their race?

Oh God.

Let me guess you had no idea that being in the EU meant free movement of goods, services, capital and labour to all member countries?

Lindah1 · 22/06/2018 12:35

People keep going on about the fact it's cheaper than a passport ...but surely you've got to buy a passport from whatever eu country you're from too. I can understand once brexit comes having a charge...but to impose it on people who are already here is scandalous

How about the leave-voters pay the fees for EU nationals to stay? I mean, it's them who want out of EU so it only seems fair they meet the cost, rather than penalise innocent people who had no say in the matter.

SheerKhan · 22/06/2018 12:36

I personally think that £65 is not a big price to pay in order to stay here. Most of us will pay without complaining. A lot of non-EU immigrants would happily swap places with us. They have it much harder.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/06/2018 12:38

I think most people are relieved.

Except some of the brexiteers who are bewildered. Grin
