AIBU?

To ask about diazepam?

I hope this doesnt sound Like a really stupid question.

Have a very stressful event coming up so GP has prescribed 5x10mg diazepam to get me through.

I took one today as a trial. I didn’t feel anxious or stressed at all today but there was no impact or change at all.

AIBU to ask if diazepam only work if you mate anxious or stressed.

I will be when I use them but I thought it was a little strange that there was no change.

I wouldn't have thought so or they wouldnt be so popular to sell but they don't do anything for me, work magically for others though.

So they'll only work when heart racing, stresses, anxious etc?

I was a bit like that the first time I took one but the second time I really noticed that I stopped caring about all the stressful things - quite wierd but definitely helped. I can't remember how stressed I was the first time, but I do remember the second time - sorry not to be more helpful!

Beta blockers are better imo.

I was given it for some major dental work and to be honest it made me worse. I couldn't stop crying at anything and everything. Ended up quite hysterical in the dentist and couldn't have the work done.

You would definitely be better off with beta blockers. I have both. For nerves and stress I use beta blockers. Diazepam I have 6 per year to fly (and fly I do Wink )

10mg??

I've had 4 tab packs of 2mg and they worked like a dice through me. That seems hugely strong, I'd be in a coma.

I have no way of comparing beta blockers and benzodiazepines. I tried propranolol and was a bit puzzled by it. Could you speak to your doctor's surgery and say you need a comparison about what would be best?

10mg? Are you sure? That’s a very high dosage.

What is your understanding of what they’re supposed to do?

Lorazepam is better for stressful medical procedures. Where alertness is required, beta blockers are excellent. Diazepam is crap and rather wishy washy.

Yes 10mg. No effect really.

I’m hoping they’ll keep me calm and stress free just for a brief period.

Several years back my GP gave me 5mg for severed neck spasms and pain and they did work for that but the 10mg aren’t as strong but as I keep saying maybe I’m not stressed yet so what can they do?

How are beta blockers used?

Diazepam worked wonders for my anxiety - stopped my thoughts from racing uncontrollably and put a stop to serious physical symptoms caused by anxiety. A dose higher than 2mg would have me sleeping for hours.

Beta blockers did nothing for me. No effect.

Go figure.

It's hard to say as i only take it when i feel stressed but i notice the effect when talking only 2mg.

I'd liken the effect to the feeling you get when you're halfway through your second drink on a Friday night - your shoulders drop, any tension goes away and you feel very relaxed.

If you weren’t feeling anxious when you took it I’m not sure what you were expecting it to do. It’s an anxiolytic. If you took paractwnol when you weren’t in pain it wouldn’t have any noticible effect either.

Paracetamol*

I’m also really confused why a GP would prescribe you 10mg. Most people take 2.5mg to begin with.

I've had 5mg in past

I had them for dental work. They were great.

I knew what was happening all the time - I just couldn't give a fuck about it!

Now I don't need them at all.

I'm surprised you've been prescribed that dosage.

This is the oddest thing I've read in so long. I don't even know where to start... I suspect your gp is very popular

Here's the theory regarding beta blockers and anxiety:
I am anxious, so my heart beats faster.I realise my heart is beating faster, therefore I realise I must be anxious as as result.I get more anxious because of my anxiety. Slow my heart rate by taking a beta blocker(it's what they do) Hey,I must be feeling chilled,I',m not panicking I have no fast heart rate,I am chilled.
Diazepam: nerve calming, can help with anxiety and especially as muscle relaxant: I have muscle spasms, great ,it relaxes them.

I use them to calm my nerves for certain presentations I do for work. I use with beef blockers

What beta blockers should I ask for? Maybe I need to tell GP 10mg diazepam aren’t working?

He did say dont come back for more as this is a one off prescription

atenolol, oxprenolol and propanolol are all well known in the treatment of anxiety.Be guided by your GP who may from experience, have a favourite, maybe not listed
