AIBU?

Please make sure children are wearing appropriate clothing

No mini skirts or crop tops, yr 6 leavers party.

So not children, but girls. Please make sure girls aren’t wearing anything which could be deemed provocative. Which is how it reads to me.

AIBU or not?

Presumably they have had issues with children wearing unsuitable clothing before. I can’t say I would get too wound up about it.

Yes, very unreasonable. They said 'children' and mentioned the items of clothing.

Are you the type of person who sends a Year 6 out in crop top or mini skirt or do you just want a fight over some perceived insult to your feminist ideology?

You can untwist your knickers now.

The children should wear clothes appropriate for age.
They might have had girls turn up wearing next to nothing in the past and are trying to discourage it.

You are presuming that a boy doesn’t want to wear a skirt and/ or crop top .

I agree with you OP. It's not 'appropriate' clothing- crop tops and miniskirts are very appropriate for a party lol! What they are saying is 'nothing provocative', which for 10 year olds is disgusting.

Well they didn't say girls, they said children so I assume they dont want the boys to wear mini skirts or crop tops either. So no children in mini skirts or crop tops. Quite sensible for a bowling trip I would have thought.

I don't get why you are finding this offensive.

What is your issue?? Seriously.

Well I’m sure if boys in the past had shown up in clothes which showed their arse cheeks when they bent over to bowl the letter would be less specific.

I can see why it’s annoying to feel that girls are the focus of clothing rules, but let’s be honest, the boys are all going to wear jeans/tracky bottoms and a t shirt.

The girls will probably be in a much wider range of clothing types, some of which are impractical and may spoil their enjoyment of the activity because they will be constantly pulling their skirts down and worrying about how they look instead of getting on with having fun.

Telling girls how to dress isn’t really a perceived insult 🤔

It's not a disco, it's bowling so probably nothing to do with being provocative. Just sensible so they don't have to worry about flashing their underwear during the activity. girls or boys no one wants their underwear on show to classmates and teachers. If it were a party or disco type thing then I'd probably be more annoyed

The email says children should wear appropriate clothing (no crop tops or mini skirts)
I would imagine that they have had issues with clothing before and boys don't tend to wear either of these things, so yes aimed at girls but I can't think of examples of inappropriate clothing for boys that they might realistically wear on this type of trip. So in short I wouldn't have a problem with the email.

Who lets their child wear a mini skirt to go bowling? My daughter would be mortified at the thought of someone seeing her knickers!

Why do some parents encourage their children to dress older than themselves?

I'd email back and ask "sorry, what EXACTLY is my ten year old daughter supposed to be avoiding provoking?"

But I am unashamedly That Parent.

I’m not really falling either way tbh, just read it and though hmm, have never seen the school giving advice re appropriate clothing before (unless waterproof etc)

Ask the school what will happen if a boy or girl wears a crop top or a mini skirt?

Report
noblegiraffe · 19/06/2018 16:26

It’s a school disco and some parents may not realise that crop tops and miniskirts are not considered appropriate so they were specifically mentioned. Parents generally realise that t-shirts with rude slogans are inappropriate so this didn’t need spelling out.

VioletCharlotte · 19/06/2018 16:26

If this was a disco I'd agree with you, but for ten pin bowling then I think it's fair enough. Mini skirts or crop tops wouldn't really be appropriate would they?

Report
Charmatt · 19/06/2018 16:26

The message doesn't say 'provocative clothing' it says 'appropriate clothing'

Report
PineapplePower · 19/06/2018 16:26

I don’t know, miniskirts DO seem inappropriate for bowling—but I guess this targets provocative clothing rather than activity-inappropriate clothing though. Doesn’t seem all that unreasonable to me (trying to think up provocative boy clothes, so far only coming up with saggy trousers)

Telling girls how to dress isn’t really a perceived insult send your daughter bowling in her mini skirt then OP if you want to make a stand. Who gives a shit if her arse is on show when she goes to bowl, ey? As long as you've made a point.

You must have a very comfortable life if this kind of trivial shit gets you so wound up. Get a grip.

How about just raising girls not to feel they have to wear mini skirts and crop tops just to do something fun like go bowling

Mini skirts aren’t appropriate for bowling. I doubt they would want the boys wearing them either!

This does seem like a case of looking for reason to be offended

Why aren't crop tops appropriate? What is inappropriate about a prepubescent girl's belly?

Report
auntiebasil · 19/06/2018 16:27

@Charmatt - I don't encourage my 11 year old daughter to wear a crop top or a mini skirt. I wouldn't be seen dead in either. But she likes them and it is her choice.
