AIBU?

To think MN needs its feminists?

Sites like MN need its users to generate content. We are its product. All services need something unique about them to differentiate themselves from the competition. At one time what differentiated MN from its competitors was that there were more intelligent discussions on here.
Now the same type of discussions happen on MN as elsewhere.

What differentiates MN from its competitors are the large number of feminists on here. That is what is unique about this site. To keep going as a decent ongoing commercial concern, MN needs its feminists. Otherwise it has nothing to differentiate it from other sites.

N.B What differentiates NM is that its local sites are far superior to any other site.

Absolutely. Part of me thinks that maybe boycotting the site for a week or two would send a strong message. Would be interesting to see how that affected things!

I think it would take longer than a week.

I'd doubt it. MN is large enough without the 'need' of any particular group - it's has enough commercial muscle power.

And I am doubting that FWR regulars do much Boden and-the-like purchasing.

SO YABU. Just for the form.

Yeah I suppose so.

Just feel so powerless and betrayed. Angry.

There’s only so many times we can keep having the same discussions, using our time and energy to fight these battles.

I think the note-worhtyness of MN is it's breadth of expertise, the fact it's a great search engine for all sorts of problem-solving, and the swearyness. The feminist-profile? Yes unusual but not a commercial game-changer.

I doubt many would even notice if the feminism board was deleted

Sad maybe it is time to go elsewhere then.

You think feminists don't buy stuff Grin
ok then!!!? Confused We aren't mythical beasts living on dragon breath and knitted lentils you know.

I'm a rad fem and I've purchased so many things I've seen/tired or had recommended on MN its silly. MN is my main "influencer" if there is such a thing in my life. I've even got a few bits from Boden

It does need feminists, as does every walk of life. What feminists are you talking about? Feminists don't usually preach hatred against a minority group. If Mumsnet cannot cope with the loss of thread after thread of trying to suppress transgender people then it has probably had its day. It should consider what it is providing a forum for? And whether it can be proud of that.

I'm a feminist and bought stuff from Boden this morning! The feminist board is great. Lively discussions, humour and intelligent debate.

How you define feminism?

I certainly peak-feministed after spending time here. The feminism board is nasty and conforms to every anti-feminist stereotype. AIBU isn't much better but that's because of the infiltration of radicals.

"There’s only so many times we can keep having the same discussions"

I keep my fingers crossed but I'm more pessimistic than you. Instead the same repetitive and idiotic 'points' are made over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over in various guises.

"What differentiates MN from its competitors are the large number of feminists on here."

Well, fewer and fewer people wish to identify as a feminist. More and more people see it as an insult (this is across genders). The sooner feminists leave MN the better of this commercial enterprise will be.

True enough. All my disposable income is spent on lighter fuel for bra-burning and t-shirts that proclaim I HATE MEN.

Boys must wear a frilly skirt and cowboy hat and girls a t-shirt with dinosaurs on and wellies.

Is it being suggested that the feminist boards will/should be removed? If so by whom? Just trying to understand context of this post, feel like I've missed something.

More that gender critical discussion is becoming so stilted and posters feeling so disillusioned that we will go elsewhere I think.

I’m not planning on going anywhere... I just avoid the feminism chat because I’m pretty much in fundamental disagreement with many posters re trans issues. There are many feminisms, perhaps the board can allow a diversity of voice, perhaps not. It’s a bit unrealistic to think that one subsection of a site is so important to it though.

I also avoid the feminism boards like the plague, I hid them long ago. I too disagree with their stance on trans issues.

The self importance is astounding.

Its kinda universally accepted aibu and chat are the biggest boards, so i imagine thats what most advertisers care about

I am an incredibly strident feminist and I haven't visited the MN feminism boards in months because I entirely disagree with the majority stance on trans rights, and if you try to have a discussion from a pro-trans perspective on MN you're met with an overwhelming wall of hostile, mocking aggression. I don't take that too personally but it's tiring and useless to fight it. So I avoid the feminism boards (which is a shame because amongst the torrent of anti-trans sentiment there is some really good stuff - it's just too exhausting and disheartening to try and hunt it out).

Feminism covers so many different topics (I can't think of a subject that doesn't have a feminist angle), why not post about something else? There are many posters that would love to join conversations on feminist issues, but we want a rounded discussion, not just the same old voices on the same old topic.

Skarossinkplunger · 18/06/2018 14:09

There are feminists here who don’t contribute to the feminist boards because they are vile and this feminist thinks MN would be a better place without them.

Report
peachgreen · 18/06/2018 14:12

I agree with PPs, I identify as a feminist but avoid any feminist discussions here, including the board, because I find the majority (or at least the loudest) opinion on trans issues to be abhorrent.

Agreed @Skarossinkplunger - in fact I'd personally be pretty delighted if the anti-trans posters boycotted MN over their (remarkably permissive, imo) stance on transphobic language.

It is not just about the feminism boards though. Look at LTB which is now a recognisable MN saying. It came about because of feminists. Feminists post all over this site. I rarely post on the FWR board.
But if there was no or little feminism on MN, the site would quickly become very boring.

So why not start a thread of your own then?
