Gluten free shampoo

So I just saw an ad for herbal essences but shampoo and it was all about nature and it’s even gluten free.

AIBU to think that most shampoo you can buy is gluten free? And that this is being pointed out because a number of people “avoid gluten” because it’s on - trend, not for genuine medical reasons?

I totally understand if you are coeliac/gluten intolerant there should be alternatives available and I’m not bashing you - lots of peopl have actual diagnosed medical issues with gluten and I’m not disputing that. I do have a genuine question though - can gluten in skincare products and shampoo cause a real issue?

My niece is coeliac and I’m fairly certain she’s never had to avoid any type of shampoo!

Haha - I do wonder if they’re intending it to sound good enough to eat! I thought maybe it could cause a rash or something if you were coeliac. Like if you’re allergic to nuts and someone touches nuts and then shakes hands it can cause a reaction.

Even with Coeliac it’s bollocks as the protein molecule can’t be absorbed by the skin.
Only time it’s needed is for a gluten allergy (coeliac is an auto immune disease not an allergy) which is incredibly rare.

My friends dad is coeliac among other things and has to use gf shampoo and body wash - terrible skin reaction otherwise.

Yes I noticed this. I think Herbal Essences have shot themselves in the foot here - makes them look like total opportunistic, money-grabbing, phobia-bandwaggoning utter twunts.

Coeliac is an autoimmune disease so I guess in some extreme cases it could affect this. My DH has coeliac and if he does eat any one symptom is irritated skin. Never thought about shampoo though

I don't drink my shampoo. Unless you have a gluten allergy (not intolerance or coeliac which isn't an allergy) then I don't see how gluten in shampoo matters?

Skin rash is a reasonably common symptom to injection of gluten. But it is biologically impossible for the protein to be absorbed through the skin

Yup I saw a supermarket brand pasta sauce being advertised as gluten free at £3. Went and checked the ingredients of their regular £1odd pasta sauce - also gluten free. Conning bastards

My ds (12) is coeliacs, and has multiple other allergies.
I have to check shampoo/soap/etc for dairy and nuts, or he will react badly, but not gluten (well, I've never checked for it in the past and don't plan on starting now).
However, I'm allergic to herbal essences, gluten free or not it makes me look like I've been badly burnt.
