For a teacher to tell secondary pupils she is a lesbian?

LoniceraJaponica Wed 13-Jun-18 19:56:47

Why would she want to?

Haggisfish Wed 13-Jun-18 19:57:20

Erm, it’s not inappropriate, no. Yabu

Buzzlightyearsbumchin Wed 13-Jun-18 19:57:22

No, my kids teachers always say a little bit about themselves at the start of the year. Totally normal.

RoseWhiteTips Wed 13-Jun-18 19:57:54

Biccie time?

zzzzz Wed 13-Jun-18 19:58:31

Not particularly interesting but why inappropriate?confused

JacquesHammer Wed 13-Jun-18 19:58:48

Did you alert the village elders?

MyOtherUsernameisaPun Wed 13-Jun-18 19:58:59

Not at all inappropriate. Being gay isn't a shameful secret that teachers should conceal.

justignorethecat Wed 13-Jun-18 19:59:15

Oh, good.

would you posted if she would have said she has a husband? confused

Racecardriver Wed 13-Jun-18 19:59:57

Well it is weird to tell anyone your sexuality without a context. I assume you have left out the context though.

Nicknacky Wed 13-Jun-18 20:00:30

Why would it be inappropriate?

MonochromeDog Wed 13-Jun-18 20:00:30

Is it inappropriate when a female teacher mentions her boyfriend/husband to pupils? No. Then it's completely appropriate for her to mention her girlfriend/wife to her pupils. hmm

justignorethecat Wed 13-Jun-18 20:01:05

I told some girls off for using gay in a derogatory fashion and said I was gay and didn’t appreciate my sexuality being used as an insult and was told off for it hmm

MissusGeneHunt Wed 13-Jun-18 20:01:17

Certainly not shameful, but can't see the need to. I don't think I've ever announced that I'm straight. Until now....!

rebelrosie12 Wed 13-Jun-18 20:01:48

Of course not! Most teachers will say a bit about themselves. E.g.. oh this weekend I went cycling with my husband. If it was wife it would make no difference.

SingingSands Wed 13-Jun-18 20:02:35

I’m sure it was told in context, yes? Or came up in conversation and she said “my wife”.

I wouldn’t have a problem with it, nor would my kids.

When I did secondary teacher training in 1999 I mentioned to my university tutor that I lived with a woman. He must have immediately informed the school I was placed in and I was taken aside by a member of staff and told not to say anything to the pupils - can’t remember what her reasoning was! I had no intention of saying anything anyway but she was clearly very worried by this. I would hope things have changed a little since then.

Glumglowworm Wed 13-Jun-18 20:03:45

It’s not inappropriate no. Who has said that it is?

hungryhippie Wed 13-Jun-18 20:04:10

Just read your update. Absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with what you said.

SuperPug Wed 13-Jun-18 20:08:12

They should be apologising to you...
