Ok, might be a bit dull here but I’m cooking spaghetti bolognese and plan to give my DNiece some. Can I put a drop of red wine in it? It’ll be cooked down for about an hour...please be kind, I’m fecking hopeless at this kid thing 😂

It'll cook right out.

Yes, absolutley. I also like a bit of marmite!

Yes definitely because cooking with wine always burns off the alcohol. It only takes a couple of mins.

Perfect! Thank you, oooo, and I’ll try the marmite...I can eat that stuff straight out of the jar 😋

The idea that the wine cooks off is often questioned on here, but in my experience it does. I know this because of cooking for someone who takes drugs that induce vomiting if alcohol is taken with them.

Yes, you can.

My Mum's signature spag bol recipe was a jar of Dolmio with a splosh of red wine in it. I grew up on the stuff!

I was gutted when I found out that was all it was. My Dad's side of the family is Italian so I had hoped for a generations old family recipe!

It doesn't all cook off but people think it does.

Cooking for an hour will reduce it sufficiently however.

Of course you can. Heat will burn the alcohol off. Any that isn't will be such a small amount that it won't have any affect on anyone.

PMSL at the Dolmio 😂

It’s in now so hopefully she won’t develop a taste for booze due to my poor aunty-ing. Put her nappy on earlier back to front today too...fun Aunty Kitty, definitely not functional Aunty Kitty!

You can and must. White wine is also great too.

1hr won't evaporate all the alcohol so just use a really small amount or cook it for longer.

Its not like you will be putting in a whole bottle (I assume?! Unless its for like 15 people...) so even if it doesn't burn off it will be so tiny the amount she will get.

Love a good spag bol! Might have to cook some up this week. lush.

Nope, not the whole bottle; One glass for the pot, 4 for me! I had no idea white wine works just as well, thank you!

alcohol percentage chart this might be handy.

About 25% of alcohol will remain in your case.

The boiling point of ethanol is 78.37 degrees C so if you are simmering for and hour it will go way beyond this temperature therefore evaporating off the alcohol Smile - the flavour will remain. I'm sure it will be delicious OP

It won't all burn off, some of it will however the amount she will get is very little so I wouldn't worry Smile

Hmmm, maybe I’ll leave it cooking a bit longer and give her a rusk in the meantime.

Honestly it will be absolutely fine! I’ve 3 under 3 they all eat recipes with wine/cider in them and none are alcoholics just yet saying “just give me the wine mummy”

1 glass in a pot of spag bol is not a problem especially when you think of the size portion a small child actually eats

Of course. I've also heard that a sprinkle of instant coffee helps bring out the flavour but haven't tried that one!

This is the best recipe for ragu.

antonio-carluccio.co.uk/recipes/tagliatelle-al-ragu-bolognese/

Simple and apparently delicious (I’m vegan so haven’t eaten it 😂). Also, spaghetti is the wrong pasta for ragu/bolognese. The sauce won’t stick to it properly.

Balsamic vinegar is also good for bringing out the flavour.

It'll be fine - all our DCs had wine-soaked spah bol from 6 months Grin

A few squares of dark chocolate or a spoonful of cocoa powder (not instant kind) really help too,
