Away for work (still in UK). Boss paid for the accommodation up front at last minute. Nothing else was available within reasonable distance of my work thing and within what he considered a reasonable budget.

I gave it a quick Google before leaving home yesterday and reviews weren't all bad. Pictures on the website made it look basic but clean.

Checked in yesterday after a long day of travelling and I haven't slept since.

SPACE - one tiny shelf with a kettle on it (and two tea bags, one sachet of sugar, one pot of UHT milk) leaving me half a shelf-space to put my stuff like makeup and deodorant on. No shelf in the bathroom. Areas beside the sink taps are tilted and tiny so can't keep anything there. No flat surface in the shower to keep anything. There is a teeny bedside drawer. Handles are broken on two of these. Bottoms keep falling out of the drawers whenever i try to put socks or stuff in so I've had to leave them empty. Just need to keep all clothes in suitcase. Can put my beauty/wash stuff on top of this bedside table I suppose but a bit worried i'll knock it over in my sleep (if i ever get some). Can't move it away from the bed as it's screwed into the floor.

PLUGS - two in whole room. One beside bed which the lamp is plugged in to atop the bedisde cabinet. Can't get behind the cabinet to remove this plug for my phone as it's so tightly pushed against the wall and screwed into the floor. There is another one at the other side of the room which the kettle is plugged into. This looks totally unsafe. The back is coming away from the kettle plug. Won't be using that!

CLEANLINESS - Fake tan/foundation hand prints over the bathroom walls and wall next to bed, Inside of drawers are disgusting and stained (so just as well i didn't keep my socks in there!) A red smear that looks like blood next to the bed. Black splatter on wall next to sink. There is no housekeeping service. There are no towels or any little shampoos etc. Not even a bar of soap.

BUGS - There are little bugs along the window which look a bit like book lice (definitely not bed lice - I check for these in every hotel I stay in on holiday). I'd try to close my window to see if that stops them but it's so hot and clammy!

NOISE - it's a small place with maybe 15 rooms. Doors when closed have an awful centimetre round gap from the door frame. Doors are clearly the wrong size. This means I can hear every conversation my neighbours have. My next door neighbours got into trouble at 4am this morning for setting the fire alarm off as they decided to smoke in their rooms. The reception is only manned between 8am and 10pm so the manager had to drive down from his own home to check on it (took him 10 mins btw, and nobody evacuated the building). Manager then entered into a bit of a curt telling off with neighbours. He then drove back home. Since then, neighbours have been going down stairs and outside every ten minutes for a cigarette. While they're outside (right outside my window), they're shouting up to their pal in the room while he's hanging out the window next to mine. Doors and stairs alone make an absolute racket never mind them chattering.

I've asked them to be quiet. They just laugh and say sorry (i'm assuming they're drunk or just very immature).

HEAT - heater is on full and there seems no way to turn it off.

SIZE - room is very small. Maybe 10ft x 3ft. Then bathroom is approx 3ft by 2ft. Basically, when you stand up from the toilet and turn to flush, your bum touches the shower glass.

I have text the reception's out of hours number at 5am and 6.30am about the heater but had no reply. Not great, is it? What if there was an emergency?

There are no nearby shops to buy a sandwich or takeaway etc. No food offered at the hotel. Not even a drinks machine. It's basically a reception desk then rooms upstairs. Nothing else. Everything appears to be 30 min walk in any direction. Only garages and factories nearby. Luckily i get fed lunch at my work thing and i'm out every day. But i'm dreading spending the next 6 evenings here. It wasn't even cheap. £430 roughly to stay here seven nights. It honestly reminds me of the time I stayed in a hostel but at least I now have my own room and loo.

Hotel is non-refundable and no way would my manager be willing to lose that money and try to find me somewhere else. Doubtful he'd be able to as everything is booked up that's nearby. This hotel on their website is saying no availability too. So not even likely the manager can switch my rooms when I get back in this evening. Manager will say this is perfectly adequate. I suppose it is. I have shelter and a bed. But ... it's quite shit. This is my first work trip away and I was quite looking forward to it. Now I'm dreading future ones. Maybe in a few years if my salary goes up, I'll be able to afford adding to my boss's budget and booking somewhere a bit better.

And now the neighbours have started with their music. And there I was worried about using my hairdryer as I thought that would be inconsiderate before 8am. Thank goodness i'm leaving soon and don't need to put up with them until this evening. I wonder if they're staying a week too. Bloody hope not.

I would check out. No way would I stay there for a minute longer.

Nope. Leave! No way I could stay in there and I’m definitely not fussy!

Phone your boss and tell him it is not suitable.

Complain complain complain to the hotel. Bombard them. Get a different room.

Phone or email your manager and tell him the hotel is dirty and unsafe. Ask him what he is going to do about it. I don't think you can complain about the lack of storage but you shouldn't be exposed to a health and safety risk.

That sounds horrific! Is there an Airbnb you could stay in? I’m sure if you pointed out everything that’s wrong (nicely) to the manager and mentioned trip advisor he may refund you for the rest of the week.

Absolutely phone your boss and tell them that the accommodation is unsuitable and that you will not stay there for another night.

I bet he wouldn't stay in it for 6 days,

I would check out. The dodgy electrics, recent history of people smoking in rooms, gaps around doors and a lax attitude to the fire alarm??

That's before you even get onto the problems with the room itself.

I really wish i could but it's compulsory for my job that I attend this. It's to get my skills up to the level required for the job and when i signed my contract a few months ago, I agreed to it. It only comes round once a year. I'm so intimidated by my boss, too. He was making such a fuss last week about the cost of putting new staff through this course and when I asked about my accommodation (I could have booked it months ago for a reasonable price and somewhere nicer!) he assured me he had it in hand. I've been given a very strict budget for my dinner as well. But i don't know what to do for meals. The nearest shop is 30 mins walk away. There is no where to store food in the room so I'd need to go here every night after work for a meal deal. That would mount up in travel costs if i didn't want to walk and these wouldn't be reimbursable. I'll need to try to order a takeaway and pay the extra out my own pocket. Ugh. What a crappy week this is going to be. And i can't even go back and moan about it at work as I should be so grateful they're fronting the cost.

Tell your boss it's not safe, you can't work there a nd he needs to sort somewhere else. If there are n no hotels, maybe an airbandb?
A lternativly, put your concerns to the hotel manager, in person and by email. They may be able to deal with at least some of the issues.

Ill definitely need to speak to the hotel manager later when i get back. Hopefully he's on my side in regards to the neighbours as he didn't sound happy at having to come down here because of them this morning.

Send him pictures of blood, dirt and socket off wall. Mention heating on and fire alarm incedent ,with a gap round the door no way can it be safe it's not a fire door which it needs to be .Tell people up and down all night outside shouting and as a lone female you don't feel safe .Don't mention about shelves and no where for make up or room small

Can't you go down to reception and tell them the room is unacceptable..
Take photos of everything that is wrong and forward them to your boss so he/she can see the state of the room

Email your manager re the health and safety risk. He can't ignore that.

Speak to your boss. Your employer has a duty of care to you and this room is dirty and unsafe. He’ll get the money back if he complains loud enough.

Thanks. I'm going to arrive early at the work thing as their website says there are pastries and tea/coffee in the mornings before it starts so yey! breakfast.

I've taken photos and been sending them to my mum all night. She's worried sick about me and is telling me the same thing. I know i need to email my boss very matter of factly about the safety (not the superficial) elements of my complaint, but he's so bloody grumpy. I can hear him in my head now. There is no way at all he'd book me somewhere else and pay an extra penny for this trip. He has been huffing and puffing all last week at how expensive this is it's terrible that work has to pay for it and not the individual needing the training ( i.e. me). He'll tell me just to come home and then say i've breached my contract. Argh i need a back bone.

Complain to the hotel and your boss. Don’t mention the shelf/drawer. That’s trivial. Focus on the heating/noise/disturbance/dirt. With your boss add in the fact that there’s nowhere you can eat. Check where else you could stay.
