I ask the same about scooter riders. No one around here wears a helmut yet they fly along like a bat out of he'll.

Dd1 (7) wears one and is only comfortable going at a snail's pace!

I don’t mind really if an adult wants to not wear one as surely they know the risks, but when their kids aren’t in one...?? DH saw an adult cycling along the road with one of those tent trailer things on the back, the child inside didn’t have a helmet on! Stupid. A tent isn’t going to do anything to protect them!

Grammar... why don’t people use it? I know it’s not the most convenient-ist, but it makes for much easier reading.

Why 😂

Are you not allowed an opinion if your grammar isn’t 100%? It annoys me on printed, professional stuff but surely not in this case. Comes across as a bit elitist.

Round here you see them with kids perched on the frame between their knees at about 2yrs old onwards also not wearing helmets going down a busy main road Hmm bastards.

The DC have skateboards, scooters and bikes, they always wear helmets (and knee/elbow pads because I have 2 wannabee Tony Hawks). I have a cargo bike and they wear helmets in that too. Stupid not to imo.

A workmate of my Dads is now in a wheelchair with brain damage after falling of his bike and hitting his head on the kerb.

In my state in the US helmets are not a legal requirement on motorcycles after the age of 21.

You are allowed an opinion if grammar isn't 100% but it doesn't carry much weight or authority.

They don't wear them here either - after four nights of being kept awake, I called non emergency police. Operate said the police can't chase riders if they're not wearing appropriate head gear, so they don't knowing right well the police have their hands tied.

I do believe there's about to be a change in legislation, but I could have made that up.

There’s a difference between correcting grammar to nitpick, and correcting SPAG when the original post makes almost no sense on the first reading!

The reason why it isn't compulsory to wear cycling helmets is because:

  1. Helmets do not protect you if you cycle faster than 12mph and fall,
  2. They don't protect you if a tonne of metal hits you like a car, HGV or bus,
  3. Like with male Olympic boxers it encourages people to take risky behaviour.
  4. The majority of people who wear cycle helmets don't change them frequently enough so they are useless, and,
  5. Cycling and using a child's scooter isn't dangerous. People don't wear cycle helmets in the Netherlands and Denmark.

Video from the Guardian about why forcing people to wear helmets won't save lives.

One of its points is that cycling is about as safe as walking, and the main people at risk of head injury are people travelling in cars, but we don't ask them to wear helmets.

Bit mean to criticise someone’s spelling and grammar, though it annoys me when people can’t display basic literacy too.

How will someone get better at reading and writing unless they are able to practice?

I don't wear a bike helmet when I'm riding, unless it's mountain biking.

I don't wear one in my car either, despite the fact that car crashes are responsible for 1/3 of traumatic brain injuries in the US.

I also don't wear one while upright generally, despite the fact that falls are responsible for 47% of traumatic brain injuries in the US.
