AIBU Furious SIL asked me to leave BBQ because of impetigo

I am so embarrassed and angry. Bank holiday weekend bbq is big deal in my family every year - we all make different dishes to take, there's bouncy castle and games and a cocktail bar.

I've got impetigo. I told DM and DF this - it's their bbq - and they didn't seem bothered so I made the dishes I'd been asked to make and turned up for the bbq today.

SIL went mad when she realised I have impetigo and wouldn't let them put the dishes I made out and basically caused a scene in front of my parents and dbro and my dp insisting that I leave. Luckily before all the other guests arrived or that would have been even more embarrassing. She wasn't shouting or anything but she made me feel like a right idiot.

In the end I did leave - with the food I had spent ages making! What a waste. And had to miss out on the day that I'd been looking forward to for ages. It's not even that contagious!

But is it contagious? I know at work someone has it and if she can’t cover it up she isn’t allowed to work.

Impetigo is a skin infection that's very contagious but not usually serious.

From nhs website

It's very contagious!

I'd be furious if I'd eaten food you had made.

What possessed you?

Mascarponeandwine Sun 27-May-18 18:59:35

Is she pg?

cloudtree Sun 27-May-18 19:00:06

Its really contagious. why would you even think of going?

NotARegularPenguin Sun 27-May-18 19:00:12

Says here it’s very contagious and you should stay off school/work. I wouldn’t want to catch it.

MiddleClassProblem Sun 27-May-18 19:00:13

NHS says very contagious confused

Firstnameterms Sun 27-May-18 19:00:18

Ok, I can actually see her point I’m afraid. It is contagious and not a nice thing to have. It screws up childcare because my daughters child minder and pre school wouldn’t take her with it so, frankly, I’d avoid anyone with it to because it is just such a pain in the arse. Saying that, I’m not sure I would actually have the balls to tell someone to leave.

SneakyGremlins Sun 27-May-18 19:00:27

It's not even that contagious

Yes, it is.

Ginormoustrawberry Sun 27-May-18 19:00:38

Impetigo is highly contagious.

Kudos to your SIL for having the balls to speak up and insist on infection control.

Someone had to have a duty or care and safeguard the rest of the family as it clearly wasn’t being done by you!

lilyboleyn Sun 27-May-18 19:00:39

Did she have kids there?
I wouldn’t want someone with impetigo around my kids. It’s not nice.
She doesn’t sound to have handled it well though.

thecatsarecrazy Sun 27-May-18 19:00:43

Well a quick google search says its highly contagious. However she was very rude

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot Sun 27-May-18 19:00:46

It's highly contagious! She probably handled it wrong but I agree with the sentiment

MaxPepsi Sun 27-May-18 19:00:48

It's very very contagious.

However as you are an adult I wouldn't have kicked up a fuss. Kids I would have.

Where us it??

DontTouchTheMoustache Sun 27-May-18 19:00:52

I remember at high school 20 years ago getting a letter home that there had been an outbreak and it was very comtagious. YABU I'm afraid

lilyboleyn Sun 27-May-18 19:01:01

*because I wouldn’t want them to catch it; it’s highly contagious.

Barbaro Sun 27-May-18 19:01:07

Well the NHS says it's very contagious, so yeah I'd say you were unreasonable. It even says don't prepare food for other people.

MiddleClassProblem Sun 27-May-18 19:01:08

There’s a pub having a party tomorrow with a kid with chicken pox if you want to join

tabbycatbythesea Sun 27-May-18 19:01:13

It’s very contagious! A friend visited my newborn a few years ago with impetigo, he ended up in hospital confused

toughasnails Sun 27-May-18 19:01:24

Its highly contagious.
She was right to be annoyed

polsha Sun 27-May-18 19:01:32

It's not even that contagious!

It's actually highly contagious. What on earth were you thinking confused

ilovesooty Sun 27-May-18 19:01:39

I can't imagine what possessed you to turn up in the first place.

dinosaurkisses Sun 27-May-18 19:01:44

Well it sounds like she handled it very poorly, but to be honest I’d be very angry if someone knowingly showed up to a social event with a condition that’s known to be extremely contagious.
