AIBU?

To want something ‘different’ for a party?

DH is going to be 40 this year. Planning a small gathering of close friends and family. The problem is, he hates dancing or silly games so I have no clue what to do to celebrate.

We have a venue for free which is beautiful (think hotel type conference venue) but I have zero idea what to do with it! Would love it to include kids - but i just can’t find any ideas anywhere. The internet is full of party ‘themes’ but all of them seem to assume a food and dancing type party, do people not do other things for fun?

How about a dinner theatre type of thing? So he can just eat and relax and watch the show/act? I know you can hire magicians...

PoptartPoptart · 26/05/2018 14:19

Casino? You can hire mobile ones and just play for chips and not real money.
Hire some entertainment, a magician, band, singer?

Dvg · 26/05/2018 14:21

can you go somewhere for a big BBQ themed birthday party? that way everyone can get involved and its in the sun, maybe somewhere pretty.

Or has he got any hobbies you can make use of?

PianoCat · 26/05/2018 14:21

Murder mystery party? What are his hobbies/ what's he into?

Mollie85 · 26/05/2018 14:21

Second the casino night and it doesn’t have to be expensive.
For my ex’s birthday I did a track day and a meal afterwards with some friends (granted not everyone!!)
Or you could just keep it simple and hire a local band and make sure there is a dance floor and the drinks are in good supply. Grin

Can I suggest an idea for the cake - my sister made one for her DH's 40th which consisted of 40 naked women draped all over the cake - all shapes and sizes blond, brunette, red head, big and small boobs, made out of fondant icing - it went down a bomb at the party Grin

Dvg · 26/05/2018 14:22

I live on the coast and want to hire a party boat for my partners birthday, Lots of food and drinks. It was either that or Fishing boat trip with a BBQ after ( he likes fishing)

RJnomore1 · 26/05/2018 14:23

Am I the only one who is WTF at the thought of that cake?

UniversalTruth · 26/05/2018 14:23

Does he like eg. Jazz music - could hire a live band. Doesn't need to involve dancing.

UniversalTruth · 26/05/2018 14:26

I crossed posted with the cake. No one will read my idea now!
I think that's a cake for Hugh hefner a specific person, not the average DH

ProustianMadeleine · 26/05/2018 14:27

Don't do that cake op.

colourfulll · 26/05/2018 14:27

casino's are great fun and can include kids.
You hire the table and a croupier and everyone gets some free 'money' which you can design with your DH's face on.
I would recommend at least 3 different tables and people can gather round as they choose.
A juke box is also a fab idea instead if a disco then people can choose their favourite tunes and you can adjust the volume
have fun planning

JellySlice · 26/05/2018 14:28

Table magic. The magician could perhaps also do a few bigger performances during the evening.

A photobooth set up with a box of props for kids (and adults!) to use their own phones in. Or hire an automatic one.

An artist stationed at a table with materials, to occupy kids or adults who fancy trying their hand. Could be someone who would teach a particular style, or might, like the table magician, wander around doing caricatures.

Drone-flying in the garden.

A murder-mystery. A small company of actors, sometimes only 2 or 3 in multiple roles, stage a crime and investigation in the middle of the party.

colourfulll · 26/05/2018 14:29

a cake with 40 hand modelled figures on it would be extremely expensive

HateSummer · 26/05/2018 14:29

Am I the only one who is WTF at the thought of that cake?

😂😂😂...no. You’re not. 😳

Fruitcorner123 · 26/05/2018 14:29

Grin at the naked woman cake. Is there outdoor space for a big fancy bbq? You could have a bouncy castle for the kids

SilverySurfer · 26/05/2018 14:31

Not if you make the figures yourself and get the kids to help.

SilverySurfer · 26/05/2018 14:32

Oh lighten up about the cake

Wondermoomin · 26/05/2018 14:34

I don't think anyone's being uptight about the cake. It sounds horrendous.

BuggeringNora · 26/05/2018 14:37

GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin at the idea of getting the kids to help make the nekkid ladies!!

Imnot bring uptight I just cannot figure out what the message is supppsed to be...the guys interest is naked women???

Bluesmartiesarebest · 26/05/2018 14:39

Assuming your DH was born in 1978, could you have a Grease movie themed party? I went to a party where everyone dressed in fifties style clothing and there was a sing a long screening of Grease.

If your DH hates musicals, does he have a favourite film, book or sports team that could become a party theme?

HateSummer · 26/05/2018 14:40

Child hand made naked fondant women 😂😂
