To think DH might get fired?!

NC for this.

Essentially DH fell asleep ah hour ago after being violently ill all night and morning; I've been sick as well so I think it's a bug. He was off one day last month but hasn't had time off before that for about three months. He asked if I'd call in for him so I did and the conversation went like this:

Him: 'Good morning X speaking how can I help?'
Me: 'Hi there, I'm calling to let you know that X'
Him: 'Sorry, who?'
Me:' Sorry, my line isn't too clear, I was calling to let you know X won't be able to come in this morning. He's been up all night being-'
Him: 'I don't want to hear it thanks, bye'

And then hung up. He didn't even let me explain why and sounded really mad. DH just had his days off for the week so I'm worried they'll think he's playing at it. Am I over thinking it or does this not look good?

Your husband needs to call in.

It's usually in the contract that you must call yourself when ill.

The manager may have had other calls this morning and could look like some are pulling a fast one so they have a longer bank holiday weekend

He needs to call in himself. The manager could have been politer and explained that though. he was rude to just hang up.

One day last month and then more time off 3 months before that is quite a lot.

Unless he’s hospitalised, he should be making the call. Why did he ask you to do it?
He ought to follow up with another phone call or at least an email.

The only reason he hasn't done it himself is because he finally managed to get some sleep and I'd have felt awful if I woke him after him being up all night. I agree that it looks bad though.

His manager sounds stressed and probably has had a fair few calls like that this morning.

I think you need to wake him and get him to call where I work it would only be ok for someone else to call if you where actually unable to e.g. hospitalised / in surgery ECT. How much time has he had of this year it sounds like at least 3 times already which can't be helped if he's ill but It will depend on his company sickness policy

Wake him up and get him to call in. Where I work you can only have someone else call in for you if you are incapable of speaking or in hospital.

He needs to call in himself. Regardless of him catching up on sleep.

He should not have asked you to do that. He will know its his responsibility.

In my work if we have three sickness absences in less than 12 months we hit a trigger for a talk with line manager

That is a ridiculous amount of sick leave. Cue the entirety of MN to turn up with a plethora of 'what if' scenarios.

perhaps this man had emetephobia? Unless he's the reincarnation of Doris Stokes or Mystic Meg the OP hadn't even be able to say why DH was off. Ridiculous 'what if' scenarios again.

How many days off sick has he had in the last year?

A day off today, a day off last month and a day off 2? 3? months ago adds up to 3 absences in 4 months. That's quite a lot of days off. It would certainly trigger an interview in my work.
