Not something I can ask people in real life Grin

We are looking to buy - is a 30% deposit about average, good or not so good? This if for a £350k house.

It’s good. As FTB’s we had £30k on a £300k house.

First house, 8 years ago, £30k deposit.

We purchased the house for approx £180k.

30% deposit as FTB is fantastic! Ours was 25% which, comparing to friends, was high. But that's only because my dad gifted us a substantial amount of money towards it.

£85K, which was from an inheritance. House was £175K (West Country).

Couldn't have saved it otherwise.

I have no real clue about house prices and mortgages but lots of clued up folk in the property section.

1st house: 0%
2nd house: 20%

As FTB we had 10% (had more in savings but as we could get the mortgage we wanted with that it made sense not to just add a few grand which made little difference to replayments, and to keep some for house improvements and fees) with the house we are buying now we are putting down £90,000 on a £450,000 house.

1st house 35k plus about an extra 25k for solicitors, stamp duty, moving costs, renovations, furniture etc

It's good.

As ftb we had 75% ltv (so 25% deposit).

Second time round just under 70% (just over 30% deposit).

Report
livingthegoodlife · 23/05/2018 20:16

good i'd say. we had about the same percentage for our first house.

Report
AwkwardPaws27 · 23/05/2018 20:22

First purchase (flat) - £9k deposit, flat was £153k. Paid high interest for the first couple of years due to the LTV.

Second purchase (house) - £62k (from flat sale, plus we kept back £10k as needed to replace roof and boiler immediately), house was £350k.

30% as FTB is amazing, well done!

As a ftb £0 as got a 100% mortgage on £70k house and sold for £100k two years later.
Second house £40k deposit on £150k house.

1st house - 0% (back in the 90s with 100% mortgaged)

Sold that and bought our second house two and a half years later with a 38% deposit, all raised from the rise in house prices.

It was crazy at the end of the last century...

I put down 6k nearly 3yrs ago (I don't know what % that is) using the 95% help to buy scheme.

House was £115k, in Kent. Two in my terrace just went for £225k!!

Exactly this.

We put 15% down last summer when we bought. Wouldn't have made much of a difference to put all of our savings in as a deposit and it helped having some cash in the bank for knocking a wall down and sorting the kitchen out.

To be honest, if we'd had enough for a 30% deposit on this we would have gone for a better house really with a lower deposit.

curiousgeorgie247 · 23/05/2018 20:42

We put down 30k which was 20% 3 years ago.
House prices round here have risen a hell of a lot since then. If we were to sell and buy somewhere else now we'd be able to put down 80k deposit. (Based on what similar houses have recently sold for on our road)
It's crazy.

£3,500 to buy a £64,950 terraced house in 1995 which we sold in 2000 for £117,500. We currently rent a 3 bed house for £875pcm.
