To wonder why I can't buy longer shorts for a nine year old girl

DD needs new shorts. She's almost 10.

I've been searching in two separate towns so far and have yet to find any shorts that cover any more than her knickers. I want a pair that are a couple of inches longer.

I've had to buy them from the boys section. I hope they fit as she's developing hips. They're a good 2 inches longer than the 'knicker skimmers' I'm finding elsewhere.

I just find it creepy that shorts are that short. I've asked my DH and DM what they think and they agree with me.

Has anyone else found shorts that actually have a bit of leg cover? Am I looking in the wrong place?
Why can't there be a choice of lengths?

Gap and Next both have had longer line shorts this summer and last but now you mention it, they were in the sale Hmm. Unfortunately, I was looking because DD10 hates her 'fat' thighs Sad.

Try walking/outdoor shops. They seem to be a bit more "practical".

I thought the same we ended up with leggings cropped as most were “hot pants” style!

I will do if the ones from the boys department don't go over her hips. They're quite stretchy so here's hoping.

Morrison's nutmeg range I've (finally) just got my dd9 a pair of denim shorts just above the knee with a strechy waistband for £9. They also did a longer pair just past the knee in a stiffer type of denim other than that I could only suggest boys shorts with adjustable waistbands

Morrison's have some mid thigh ones for girls

Ah fabulous will take a look in Morrisons. Might get the next couple of sizes too. Swaying that's sad about your DD, mine is skinny and actually likes the hot pant type ones but neither me or DH want her wearing them.

The holy grail would be some that are also not blinking denim. Who on earth wants to wear thick, stiff fabric to run around in hot weather?

So far, I'm drawing a blank

I've had the same problem with DD. The shorts seem to be tiny this year!

Mountain Warehouse has longer ones and that are a bit more practical than the flimsy ones that everywhere else seems to sell.

Couldn’t agree more OP. It’s seriously creepy. Every pair of shorts on sale for girls at the main high street shops are now bum-skimming Daisy Dukes.

I've taken to buying boys ones. Thankfully dd(9) doesn't mind she's partial to boys t-shirts too cooler designs.

How long do you want? I got these for my DD, and in a size up they’re even a bit longer.

my ds and dd both wear cotton shorts from Primark that come in a pack of two for a few quid. They're pretty plain and unisex. Have a black pair and either a brown pair or khaki pair in the pack . Longer than bumskimmers but not really long either.

boden usually do non-hotpants in the girls section, and I'm pretty sure next do too, but if you don't find what you're after in the girls section, just look in the boys.
Half the stuff in both sections I can't actually work out how they've decided which gender it suits best as they seem to put anything vaguely unisex into the boys section

Try this: www.vertbaudet.co.uk/girls/shorts.htm. I find that French brands tend to have a bit more variety for girls shorts. I find it really annoying as well. Even for a three year old, you'll struggle to find something longer than a pair of Daisy Dukes.

I like lands end shorts and skorts. M&Co have some nice ones too, not overly long but quite flappy and giving reasonable coverage.

Have you had a look on uniqlo?

I bought my Dd some, they are cotton and have elasticated waist plus go to just above her knee. They aren't tight at all - and not expensive either.

I'm always dismayed at how short 'shorts' are for young girls. My two have cycling shorts and football shorts because there's some sort of length on them and they're cooler than denim.

I did manage to find a fab pair of knee length denim shorts for my eldest (10) in Monsoon this year for when she wants to be a bit smarter but still wear shorts. However they are a birthday present so I don't know if she likes them yet!

Same problem for my 5yo. And she rejected the boys shorts because she knew they were for boys. I guess if I had skinny little 5yo legs I would wear hot pants so maybe she should make the most of it but I'm not happy they're so tiny.
