What the fuck is wrong with people these days?

A 12 year old boy stuck his hands through the bars and when a meerkat bit him, he killed her. The meerkat was pregnant at the time.

Why has his parents not taught him to keep their hands out of enclosures? Or not killing?

Where was his parents when he decided to do that?

I don't agree with him receiving death threats as some people are saying but I bloody hope he gets a good bollocking

This isn't a very pleasant story, but I think people are going way over the top in their reaction to what the twelve year old did. He slammed the meerkat to the ground, presumably to get her off him. It's a wild animal at the end of the day, so I suspect it had bitten him quite badly. I think YABU, given you seem to be suggesting he killed it for fun.

Who killed the meerkat?

InspMorse Mon 21-May-18 17:03:51

The boy? shock

Soubriquet Mon 21-May-18 17:04:23

Might help if I linked the story <facepalm>

I’m guessing it’s this.

InspMorse Mon 21-May-18 17:07:10

Just googled it. If he picked it up after it bit him (as reported by some papers) then WTF.

Fattymcfaterson Mon 21-May-18 17:08:57

I'm sure his parent have taught him not to kill, it doesn't look as though it was deliberate.
Yes he was stupid to put his hand through the bars, but instinct when something is biting you isn't the same as murder

GalwayWayfarer Mon 21-May-18 17:09:06

From the story: He’s then alleged to have picked up the 18-month-old meerkat and swing it onto the ground, killing the mother and baby immediately

So it sounds pretty deliberate. Horrible, uneducated child needing much better adult supervision and a close eye since childhood brutality to animals is a bit of a red flag

Soubriquet Mon 21-May-18 17:09:53

It sounds like he did pick her up afterwards not just to get rid of her. The amount of force required to kill her by slamming her to the ground doesn't make it sound like he was trying to shake her off

WittyJack Mon 21-May-18 17:11:20

I was reduced to actual tears of rage by the story about the girl in wichita who tortured a terrified little kitten to death whilst her friend filmed it. Apparently local kids know who they are and won't make their lives fun - it's very very hard not to say, "fucking good."

People are just shit. However shit something is, someone shit somewhere will have done it sad

GalwayWayfarer Mon 21-May-18 17:12:30

Also, 12 is old enough to know the consequences of picking her up and smashing her to the ground. A younger child doesn't necessarily know that they could kill an animal that way. A 12 year old does.

BeefyCakes Mon 21-May-18 17:13:15

Mass murderers start by killing animals, this kid needs psychological help. And soon.

Soubriquet Mon 21-May-18 17:13:34

Yeah I saw that one witty

Awful girl. I would be very ashamed if that was my daughter wondering where the fuck I went wrong sad

Frenchiemamax Mon 21-May-18 17:14:52

YANBU OP. I could rage about these stories until I die. If we can’t teach children A) boundaries and B) respect for all beings then the world is going to shit.

PorkyPortia Mon 21-May-18 17:20:57

God that’s awful

WorraLiberty Mon 21-May-18 17:21:35

Where was his parents when he decided to do that?

He was on a school trip

crunchymint Mon 21-May-18 17:22:30

Of course death threats on a 12 year old is not okay.
But not lets excuse a 12 year old deliberately killing an animal either.

Soubriquet Mon 21-May-18 17:24:35

If he was on a school trip, I hope he is banned from any more excursions. He's obviously not trusted to be alone

OliviaStabler Mon 21-May-18 17:25:02

I can't tell you what I really feel about this as I'd get an MN flaming.

Poor MeerKat sad

maxthemartian Mon 21-May-18 17:26:52

I hate it when animals get killed because of human stupidity.
Horrible little shit, hope he's petrified now.

boopsy Mon 21-May-18 17:27:50

Vile child, what an absolute evil little shit! Id be gutted if one of mine behaved that way. He is not a small child and old enough to know better!

Soubriquet Mon 21-May-18 17:28:23

I doubt he particularly cares tbh. Not unless he is physically receiving death threats in person.

RaininSummer Mon 21-May-18 17:29:39

Absolutely ignorant and twisted. Little shit.

Juells Mon 21-May-18 17:29:41

Who killed the meerkat?

Mrs Green in the conservatory with a candlestick.

(Sorry, I'm not laughing about the poor meerkat, just the juxtaposition of InspMorse and the "Who killed..." question made me laugh 😳 )

Wherever it happened, the meerkats shouldn't have been accessible to the public, very careless of the zoo. Young boys will always do things they're not supposed to.
