Glass garden table top - heating up

Just wondered if something like this should carry a warning in the advert or the pacakaging.

My Mum went and bought a small set for the garden last week. I noticed at the weekend with the unusually hot weather, that the glass top gets quite hot to touch being sat in the sun. So muvch so that you would remark "Ohh" and pull away if you'd put your arm on it. I commented that we would need to be careful with DS (almost 4) around so he doesnt catch himself on it as it felt quite hot. My Mum said "Oh I didnt think about that!"

I chalked it up as one of those impulse things my Mum buys without thinking it through and forgot about it. My Mum said a short while later she would have a word with Wilkos as she doesn't think it safe. I said "It's a glass table that's been sat in the sun, what else would you expect other than it to get hot - don't worry"

It niggled a bit because I suppose in some ways my Mum is right? No where do it say on the ad above that the table top is glass, or gives a warning about exposure to heat.

It's by the by now as she's bought a small waxproof table cover to avoid any issues but wondered if anyone had any thoughts on it?

I'm sure I saw a story a few months ago about glass tables 'exploding' in the sunlight.

HateTheDF I'm not even sure if it is glass. It certainly felt like it and heated up enough to make me think it was but I can't see anything in the info online.

The similar styles ones on other websites say it is tempered glass - I assume that it's the same material?

I went on a beach in Greece last summer, the sand was hot, there were no warning signs who do I complain to?

gingham I'm not that stupid my dear. Yes I know they are one and the same things. Sand gets hot, so would glass... yes yes.

Just interested in whether it should say something on the info. In this instance, it doesnt even say the top is glass.

A friend of mine is on her 2nd replacement table from B & Q after the first two exploded when they got hot, so I think it's a valid worry!

Makes you wonder why they are allowed to sell them if there's a risk Ski

She does rush into these things my Mother...

Woo, a hot table.

Lucky you didn't buy a metal one eh??

Surely that's part of life's learning curve - 4 year old touches hot table, learns not to touch hot table - all done....

Unless you were planning on holding the kid down on it & listening to the sizzling??

my thought is are you always so mean about your mother?

IIIustriousIyIllogical You foiled my plan!

Miggeldly There's a backstory of her buying things, sofas, chairs, tables - that she can't fit in places, or similar things. That's what I meant by her not having through it through. She, for example, has a lovely dining table in the kitchen. Unfortunately it#s never been sat at because it's too big for the kitchen and remains pushed up against the wall.

She just gets giddy when she wants something. Silly sod.

Good job we live in the UK and our sunny days are numbered!

Things get hot in the sun. Who knew?

As I say in the OP, it's by the by. It's now got a cover and isn't that hot you would injure yourself.

I just wondered if they are supposed to carry warnings - like glass drinking recipticles that say underneath "Do not fill with hot liquid" Just curious is all, Prehaps as it's tempered, it's considered safety glass and doesn't need to carry one. It's not something I've ever thought about before and wondered if anyone, genuinely knew.

I'm not being funny but how did your mum not know that the top of the table was glass?

FuckPants Because she's a nitwit who doesnt think stuff through. Ironically, she has gotten rid of glass topped coffee tables in the past for fear DS/DNiece may hurt themselves. Confused Proper nitwit my Mum

I had a glass top one from Asda a few years ago that exploded. A few years later our patio doors shattered too!

Is this the actual table she's got because:

Make the most of your outdoor space and soak up the sun on our stylish Rattan Effect Bistro Set. The set includes 2 chairs and a glass-topped table with a frame made from weatherproof and hard-wearing charcoal powder coated steel.

Tempered glass is stronger than usual glass so I don't think that there is much to worry about, our garden is a sun trap during summer and our glass table has lasted without exploding.

CheeseAndTomSandwich The wilko one linked above is what she got. Am unsure if she purchased online, or went in store to buy.

She had a wooden one a few years back, didnt put it away in winter and it went rotten. She had one of those plastic rattan sofa, 2x chair and coffee table sets and saw this and thought it would match. Mainly so we have somewhere to eat outside. I did point out it's the UK and we rarely eat outside...

I don't know why so many replies are so snarky on here, the OP has raised a valid safety issue that I am now aware of. I wouldn't have thought twice about the glass top getting hot in the sun before. Metal yes, glass no.

cjt110 · 21/05/2018 16:16

CheeseAndTomSandwich I'd also easily bet you a tenner she wouldn't have read that if she did order online. It'll have been a look at the picture and price. Silly mare

DorothyGarrod Because I'm asking a valid question p'haps that goes against the grain of MN? I wouldnt have thought of it myself until I put my arm down and thought "Oh bloodyhell thats a bit hot"

All sorts of other shit contains warnings. Genuinely interested whether tables with glass tops might need a safety warning? Although presuming not

YANBU Op, after all, windows are glass, and car windows are glass, it wouldn't occur to me to worry about a glass table, but presumably because of the angle or type of glass they are prone to heating and therefore there should be a warning. Especially if some have exploded - wtf?
Why don't windows get hot in very hot weather - anyone?

Metal yes, glass no.
So your car is parked in the sun the bonnet gets hot but not the windscreen, ok then.
