AIBU?

AIBU to think DH was scammed

We were selling our old car yesterday through autotrader. I took out kid and dog to reduce distractions. DH was dealing. He rang to tell me car was sold for £450 less than advertised but to some lovely people.

I got home later to find they'd had trouble transferring money to our account. He'd seen them set up the transfer on their side but that the payment was delayed until today. Basically he let them drive away without paying.

No money has arrived today. Have emailed them to express concern there's been a mix up and ask them to confirm the details of the transferred money and no answer.

DH said he saw their drivers license, checked it had the same address they'd asked the car to be registered to and overall they seemed a lovely couple. He is sure the money will show up and this is all a mix up. I think they have scammed him and am quite upset and frustrated that he let someone drive away with a few grands worth of our car without actually handing over a penny.

Please tell me I am a suspicious whatsit and this is bound to be a mix up?

No. Sorry but I'd say you've definitely been scammed

lanbury · 21/05/2018 09:47

Did he take photocopies of all the paperwork? Has he signed over the ref doc etc? I think I'd be taking a visit to the address on the license!!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 21/05/2018 09:48

I can't imagine what your DH was thinking letting someone drive off without already having received the payment.

Oysterbabe · 21/05/2018 09:50

He's crazy. Definitely a scam.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 21/05/2018 09:51

What was he thinking? What an idiot! Did he at least take a note of their address?

ThePants999 · 21/05/2018 09:51

Sigh. You never, ever release the car before you've got the money.

The only glimmer of hope here comes from the fact they haggled - scammers often don't bother!

Brandnewshit · 21/05/2018 09:51

Im sure they were lovely, hardly likely to be able to trick people if they were rude to a potential victim.

Returnofthesmileybar · 21/05/2018 09:52

Oh ffs what was he thinking!!!

HateSummer · 21/05/2018 09:53

Oh God. Something like this would kill me. I really hope the money comes through.

KirstenRaymonde · 21/05/2018 09:54

Sorry but it doesn’t look good. I’d be calling the police.

Bananalanacake · 21/05/2018 09:56

But they have to register it with the DVLA. Can he trace them that way

BlueJava · 21/05/2018 09:57

So sorry OP but sounds like DH has been scammed. It'll be a matter for the police so keep all relevant pics of them/docs etc. If you have CCTV outside your house save it so the police can see them. Please also take advice because if they they start doing crazy things in the car the penalties can come back to you and your DH (as it'll still be registered to you).

Rocinante1 · 21/05/2018 09:57

Did he photocopy or photograph their details? You know that payments are mostly now 'faster payment' and they usually appear instantly in the account you're sending money too, so why did your husband believe there was a delay? He's been a bit of an idiot here.

If he kept their details, then go round to their house (with a few people incase they get violent). If they don't pay then call the police.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 21/05/2018 09:58

Call the police, they have stolen your car and if it is involved in anything illegal it is in your /dh name. . And ring dvla.

Skittlesandbeer · 21/05/2018 09:59

I guess there are two ways to learn this stuff...your DH has chosen the hard one for sure. Expensive lesson.

I’d have to move out for a few days. I’d be too stabby.

I sincerely hope we’re all wrong.

spookytime · 21/05/2018 09:59

Oh no! I’d be sick with worry.

Is he really not worried?

Has he their number, can he (or you) ring them?

TitZilla · 21/05/2018 10:00

I’m with Lloyds. Transferred £300 to my sister yesterday and it still hasn’t arrived. There’s a little pop up saying it can take 24/48 hours for the payment to show.

Could he phone his bank and see if there is a pending transaction?

Tartsamazeballs · 21/05/2018 10:00

😲 Yeh, you've been had.

Returnofthesmileybar · 21/05/2018 10:01

I'd have to move out for a few days. I'd be too stabby

^ This, I couldn't be around him, I really couldn't. Even IF it turned out not to be a scam I would be raging, I mean how thick can you be

spookytime · 21/05/2018 10:02

Oh yes, phone the bank.

OP you take over even if he is in denial. You need to do something for your peace of mind even if it is just a glitch.

SparklyMagpie · 21/05/2018 10:03

I would be livid with him!

I hope he's got some evidence !

FuckPants · 21/05/2018 10:07

Is your husband an idiot? Actually don't answer that because he is.

Why did he let them take the car when they hadn't paid?!

Has he phoned the bank at all? Any transfers I've done always show up almost immediately but sometimes they do take a day or two. I'd be worried about them not answering you though. It certainly seems like you've been scammed. I guess all you can do is wait at least 48 hours and then report it to the police if no money shows up and you don't get an answer from the couple.

JustbackfromBangkok · 21/05/2018 10:12

Oh dear.
Yes, I would say he has been scammed.
When I sold my car the buyer and I both used our telephone banking service (stood next to each other and the car) both banks confirmed the transfer before the buyer drove away.

Deandre · 21/05/2018 10:12

He has been scammed, why would you let someone drive away without seeing the money in your bank? Of course they were lovely people...that’s how they convinced him to do it!
