To think I owe my dog so much

It's sunny and I've had a glass of wine, which may play some role (I'll leave it to others to decide how big or little...) in why I'm posting about my dog on Mumsnet on a Friday afternoon.

But seriously, I love my dog.

I owe him so much. We're childless and I spend a lot of time on my own as DH commutes to London for work and gets back very late (not an issue or a bone of contention, feel very fortunate that he works so hard in a job he enjoys) but I have a very flexible job where I can regularly work from home, so were it not for our dog I would be alone for most of the day.

Our dog is the best thing (other than marry) than we've done.

I love his innocent, non-judgmental little face, his gentle nature, how the tiniest event (breakfast, dinner, new ball, a butterfly, particularly interesting smell in the garden, a familiar doggy friend met on a walk) can inspire so much joy in him.

He's my reason to get up in the morning and my constant companion. I don't know what I'd do without him. Having him dependant on me to love him, walk him and look after him gives another dimension of purpose to my day.

Is anyone else grateful to have their dog/cat as their little buddy, whatever the circumstances might be?

Yes me! I have just got my first ever dog. She is 13 weeks so we have had her for just 5 weeks and I LOVE her. She is just amazing and I can't believe I waited so long to consider getting a dog. I had cats previously but this is so much better.

Got my latest fur ball a few weeks after my child died ... I owe him for getting us through those weeks and months ... He is a lazy old man who was seemingly born aged 80 - but he loves us so much and is the best to cuddle when I'm grieving ...

Dogs rock :)

Ahhh!! What a lovely post. My dog is like my third child. He is actually my favourite one but dont tell the DCs! Grin I love getting home to see him at the door with tail wagging. Same in the mornings when I get up. He is the most affectionate, loyal boy ever. I wish he knew how important he was to me.

That’s lovely OP 🙂

Dogs are the most amazing animals who give you so much. You’re so right about the joy they find in everything.

I blubbed terribly the other day over the dog I lost 20 years ago. God I still miss him. I’m contemplating getting another soon. I feel like I owe it to my children to give them the experience of having a dog in their lives.

Can we see a pic OP? Grin

A yes from me as well. JoyfulDog is very happy and loving and stands in the window watching me go along the path to work and is up there waiting when I'm due back. She then leaps about 4 to 5 feet in the air in front of me with joy as soon as I open the front door and rushes around me, beside herself with delight. She is also very funny and nosy and if anything happens (I drop something, the parrot drops some food, something falls over, etc) she RUSHES into the room to offer support/an opinion/eat dropped food etc. She never wants to miss anything. She also spends a lot of time each day stretched out on the sofa, offering her tummy for a rub.

My dog has literally saved my life. She is getting on now at 14. I've had her since she was three (a rescue) and I know I will be a wreak when her time comes.
My mental health would have been the end of me without her in my life.

Ddog saved my husbands life a few weeks ago by waking him up (night worker) when the kitchen was on fire. He is amazing and we owe him more than words can say. He is loved very much by us.

I have a puddy cat and we love him so much. He's the centre of our home and has helped me recover from depression. I miss him more than the kids when I'm away.

I feel the same. Like the OP my dh does long hours in London and so much of the time it’s just me and the Woggalicious.

She’s just so funny and butt wiggly. When she goes out for her morning wee she’s just so purposeful bustling about checking out the new smells.

And she spoons me at night and if she senses I’m awake she gets her belly out for rubs.

She’s such a total joy. This is her sitting next to me on the front step when I have my morning coffee.

I think she’s looking at me adoringly but it’s likely the rich tea biscuits she’s after.

I often say that my dog is my favourite child, he's my constant companion and is very rarely not by my side.

My sons wanted a dog and I almost said no, because they'd lose interest and it'd become my responsibility but we were shown him at Dogs Trust (he was 6 weeks old) and my husband said he knew at that moment that there was no way I was going to say no. What I thought would happen is exactly what did happen, I walk him and feed him and I wouldn't have it any other way. He is absolutely wonderful, the first dog I've ever had.

Awwlookatmybabyspider ours is a rescue but he was only a few months old when he was tied up and abandoned outside the rescue.

Some days I feel disgusted at why anyone would ever do such a thing to an innocent creature.

Other days I bask in the smugness of knowing what an incredible dog we have and how whoever his previous owners will never know what it feels like to have earned his trust and love Smile

Lovely post. I went through difficult times in the last few years, and l was let down by a few so-called “friends”. My dogs were always there for me. I could talk to them and they would listen, and wag their tails at me. Seeing them play together is beyond therapeutic, such joy and fun. Small things, but dogs are just pure love.

Bearhunter09 I obviously don't know the ins and outs of your situation but, in general, I would say animals do wonderful things for mental health. They depend on you to get up in the morning, walk them, feed them, socialise them. Having something so reliant on you to meet their needs gives your day structure, not to mention of course the company! My dog is a great listener Smile, a great conversation starter with strangers and he doesn't ever judge.

My dm got our ddog from kennels (apparently had distemper and vet suggested pts) when me +she were 18 months old.
As an only dc she was my furry dsis.. She died when we were both nearly 21. Not bad for a poorly girl!!
She was never on a lead, could stand on her hind legs and skip with me and master walnuts leaving just a pile of shell ! Apart from jabs she saw a vet twice in all her time, the day the vet came will never be forgotten. Rip my best friend. 27 years ago this August.

My dog saves my mental health just by being him and being there. Because of him, every day I have to get up and go out in the fresh air several times a day.

Lovely post. I love my dog so much too. He is the best dog in the world, loving, funny, so clever. He follows me everywhere and always snuggles with us. I think the relationship between person and dog is very underestimated. I have cats too and have been close to some cats in the past but it's nothing like my dog.

This thread is lovely and makes me a bit teary Blush.

I would love a dog - I live alone and no partner/children - but one of the things that stops me is what I'd be like if it died. Even thinking about losing my non-existent dog is scary. (Also, more practically, what to do re holidays etc deters me a bit!).

My dog is temperamental, too smart for his own good, very often perplexed by things like other dogs playing around them (other dogs playing: he stands and stares, they try to get him to join in, he does one half hearted bounce and gives up), obsessed with anything milky (cheese, yoghurt etc), loves to chase things and then celebrate by digging a hole around the thing (not to b, HATES feet, goes crazy with joy when I get home from work, and would sniff for 1000 years without getting bored. He is so loyal to me and only me. He loves my husband too but he is my baby.

I love him so much, even though he just growled at me for leaning over him (still working on training...)

Laurie I have a Scottie too! He's the light of my life, he and the dog before who I had till he was 15, literally have kept me going at times over the last two decades. I am a single parent and both my children have autism. No help from anyone. People have said to me "it must be hard being all alone in the evenings" and I am always "Hmm but I am not alone I always have my boy with me". He goes pretty much everywhere with me and never fails to just be there if I am sad or down. His little face gazing at me always gives me a lift, such beautiful loving eyes. He grumbles a lot too, Scottie's tend too, and it feels like he's actually trying to talk to me when he does. We call him The Dog-tor too as he's straight in there trying to distract and comfort my daughter when she has a meltdown. For me life is "less" without a dog as part of my family.

Mine is the hugest pest in the world. Follows me round the house; drops toys on my laptop; tries to sit on my lap when I'm working and generally behaves like he's starved of attention if I so much as turn my back for a second. I love him and all his ridiculous behaviour Grin
