To find Zoella insidious

She seems to just push products onto her very young female fanbase. Each month she makes a video telling all her 12 and 13 year old followers what her "monthly faves" are.

The total of all of these is hundreds and she seems pretty clueless on many of them. Almost as if she's just paid to promote them. Then she links them all below with affiliate links so she earns a commission on every sale. For beauty products they have a huge markup so can earn a lot by doing this.

She triple dips as makes thousands just on each video from the adverts.

Advertising on childrens TV is very strict and regulated. Shouldn't she be subject to the same scrutiny as she's having more views the money TV programs get?

I can't get too get up on this.

She has a strong adult following too.

It is your responsibility to control what you child has access to not YouTube to censor channels.

It is a new modern form of advertising no different to when I read tween magazines with all there paid product placement and reviews.

I don’t think 12 year olds still like her.

She is paid to promote the products. That is literally her job.

Is she even popular anymore? I thought she's lost favour recently, with the ghost-writing and insanely expensive advent calendar, and the fact that she barely makes videos anymore.

Something quite creepy and unsettling about a 28 year old women dressing and behaving like a teenager in order to flog overpriced cheap tat accessories to her young impressionable fan base.

She is morally bankrupt

Did you see her £50 advent calendar? Clearly exploiting young teens for money

job for parents - teach your kids that if it is advertised, it is crap. life rule.

YANBU. Can't stand the bloody woman. But she is not really doing anything wrong..... Same as the Kardashian beasts. No talent, and all make money from gullible young fans, but aren't doing anything wrong......

The Zoella advert calendar that was £50 (and only had TWELVE days) did me in! I wasn't a fan before, but after that, my disliking for the Zoella machine increased.......

My niece is obsessed. She is 8. It's vile. I blame her mother more than anyone else. Why is a kid being allowed to watch crap like that on youtube.

Totally agree, her stuff is overpriced tat (that my dd loved at one point)
I refuse to buy any of her products since the advent calendar debacle.

ADVENT calendar, not advert ..... (sorry)

The most nauseating thing is the stuff she gets sent. Literally thousands and thousands of pounds of things every week. It’s obscene.

My 13 and 8 year old can't stand Zoella after the advent calendar rip off. Although they were never big followers, they'd watch occassionally. However I sat and talked to them about all in your post and how she makes all the money she does basically advertising so many products she will likely never use again to make money from them and they haven't watched her since.

I think that 12/13 year old's should be supervised on the internet and be taught not to take what these people say as gospel.

Her answer to any criticism would be that she isn't aiming her 'show' at children.

On YouTube you have to state in the downbar if it's a sponsored video, so it's pretty transparent in that regard and easy to tell if it's something she's being paid to like. Zoe is a millionaire anyway and doesn't tend to do sponsored stuff any more, I think she genuinely does like the products in her favourites videos.

GimbleInTheWabe · 26/04/2018 23:30

But how do you think she became a millionaire @eggcellent? Certainly not by writing her books. It was by doing adverts with companies before you had to declare it. Or giving rave reviews to products that she was sent for free. By aiding the huge buy buy buy machine and selling it to a very young and impressionable audience. And then of course her failed summer party event which from what I read at the time was a complete shambles, with many kids and mums left disappointed and out of pocket too.

I think she was lucky by being in the right place at the right time. She's incredible vapid and 'omg literally loves' everything she's been sent by these companies for free.

The PP had it on the nose with "Sjes morally bankrupt".

You can see it in her eyes that she's not happy.

YANBU, awful women, and I'm not buying this doe-eyed innocent look about how she never knew the advent calendar was such a massive rip-off, and how she only loves her fans. Greedy to the end, I hope she will get ditched by fans soon, the less talentless dingbats influencing our young generations the better ✊🏼

And I do think YouTube should be regulated, I don't believe that it's too big a job, and people like her are little better than scammers or those annoying MLM people

Perhaps she thinks she's 12.

As she thinks there's 12 days in Advent.

I used to love her. But now just seeing her ‘Zoella’ logo makes me cringe!

Report
CircleofWillis · 27/04/2018 06:41

Had never heard of her but was overjoyed at picking up her calendar for £5 in a boots post Christmas dump shelf. There were hundreds!!! of them.
Poor quality cheap tat which was really only worth 20p to £1 for each item. But my DD(4) was happy.

Oh come on, eggcellent. I watch a lot of YouTube - she's flogging the same stuff everyone else is. You see it all pop up time and again in their 'monthly favourites' for a few weeks, then onto the next 'obsession'.

Plus whenever she shows make up she allegedly loves, you can see it's never been used. And would a multi-millionaire really be shopping at Primark?

Advent calendar was a total rip off, money for old rope. I agree with pp, she is morally bankrupt. Nice phrase. I may use this in my resignation letter....
