To ask what contraceptives you're on?

Kinda a weird place to post but I'm posting mainly for traffic and different alternatives and opinions.
I have pcos and I'm looking at the copper coil as it doesn't interfere with hormones etc which is ideal but I've heard so many negative things about it. The appeal is it lasts for a long time.
What are you using? What do you find works for you? If you have pcos, what is working well for you?
Thanks all

Copper coil, my second. All fine, periods were always heavy anyway but last maybe a day longer now. I don't do well with hormones so it suits me

Did it hurt to have in? My mom had both coils and said the copper was the worse with the after effects. Apparently it embedded into her womb and it had to be scraped out 😥 she said the merina? Is that the other one? Was fine but she was almost passing out having it in, her blood pressure completely dropped.

Not massively, I used a family planning clinic and the woman who fitted it used to be a midwife so was super speedy! I don't have children either so they said it might be more tricky to fit. Put it this way, I went back for a second one, and I'll be going back for a third!
Felt like one big period cramp, sore but over very fast

@Twounder1 Was this recently that your mom had the copper coil? IUDs have improved over the years.

Mirena coil. No periods, no PMS, no remembering to take any pills.

I use an app called Natural Cycles based on the fertility awareness method (measuring temperatures and OPKs). We use condoms on the off days.

Downside is you need to be a very regimented person for it to be really effective, but their ideal user is me down to a tea. I wake up at the same time every day including weekends, rarely stay up late, don't drink and seldom take any medicine.

I was warned that it's not great for people with PCOS, but I've not had a problem. I've regulated my cycle considerably by focussing on diet, exercise and stress management and having the app data helps me see what works.

Nuva ring! So easy to maintain and it has the lowest hormone release of all contraceptives Smile

My husband had a vasectomy.

We knew we didn't want any more DC.

Implant (nexplanon). Super easy and painless insertion into upper arm, and don't have to think about it until 2020. Tiny bit of bruising after and I can feel it in my arm if I look for it, iyswim, but no periods, no weight gain.

I thought about getting a coil but I was just post birth and didn't want to wait another month -to make sure I never had to go through labour again-

I had a tubal ligation. Best decision ever. I absolutely don't want any more kids.

I loved the copper coil. Had 2 and will get another after I've had the baby. Was on dianette for a decade and was told by chance from the nurse that I'm at increased risk of a load of cancers because of it, it also messed with my emotions. Will never touch hormones again! Coil needs putting in by someone who knows what they are doing so go to a proper clinic, you may feel woozy afterwards, I did on 2nd one, and it may increase period pain but I never suffered like that. Give it a whirl, you can get it taken straight out if it doesn't settle well for you X

Oh and your fertility goes straight back to 100% as soon as it comes out so good if you are thinking of another baby. I totally love the plain old copper coil!!

Mirena here. Love it. No periods and no having to remember to take pills.

I’m on my 3rd mirena coil which I’ve used as contraceptive since my DD was born.
Haven’t had any problems with any of them, no periods at all (used to have very heavy painful ones).
I had a DVT when I was pregnant which ruled out going back on the pill and I found on the mini pill I was spotting pretty much all the time so tried the coil.
I did find it uncomfortable when it was put in, a bit like a really bad period cramp but i’ll Admit that having it removed (I found) was much worse. However, the pain is short lived and only happens once every few years so for me the positive side outweighed the negative.

My DM had the mirena coil and experienced the same as your mum. It dislodged and she had to have surgery to remove it. It stopped her periods all together but she said she still got PMS symptoms, just without the release of a period which was shit.

I had the implant last year for just over a month before I cried and begged for it removing. It was fucking awful. Lost my sex drive, dried up down below completely and just bled from the minute it was put in.

I am also considering the copper coil.

I'm on a contraceptive called infertility. Very effective, however comes with the negative side effect of ridiculous symptom spotting and end of cycle depression.

I was on Depo Provera prior to pregnancy. After birth I will be getting the implant.
I'd prefer to be back on Depo but it's hard getting an appointment every three months.

As soon as I can get an appointment for my GP to write a referral letter, I'll be on a progesterone coil to hopefully control my endometriosis a bit better.

Only things with copper coil:

  1. Periods were heavier for a while.
  2. My smear test showed I had contracted an infection from having it. Apparently it was rare and harmless but I didn't like it!
  3. It damages your lining and I think is the reason I haven't conceived for a year after having it removed given that last time i conceived immediately!

I don't like hormones though. Nothing is perfect unfortunately!
