To refuse to wear head scarf?

Doing a race at weekend with two friends. One is Muslim and wears a head scarf although she's very westernised in other ways so is self conscious about it. She expressed this concern that people would stare at her wearing a head scarf do my other friend said "tell you what, me and bossy paws will wear one too then you won't be the only one". I don't want to!! I find it hard to exercise at the best of times, a scarf wrapped around my head and face will totally put me off! Apart from that, it's not my culture of religion to do this so I don't want to! Will I look bad when I tell them I'm not wearing one?
