Chasing up tuition payment AIBU

I tutor a student, and we have a combination of face-to-face and Skype lessons.

After my most recent Skype lesson last week, I still haven’t received payment. I have been paid for a face-to-face lesson that took place after this though.

I’ve drafted an email to the client requesting payment. Do you think this sounds fair?

Thanks :)

Dear X,

I hope that everything is going well.

I’d just like to follow up about payment following the Skype lesson last week please. I had a look at my bank account earlier today, and it looks like the payment hasn’t yet come through.

It would be great if you could let me know when the payment has been made please.

Thanks very much.

Best wishes,

XXXX

No kisses and keep it more straightforward.
Dear x
On checking my records I note a payment for lesson on (date) via Skype has not been received.
Can you process asap.
Yours sincrely

This kisses are strange.

The message sounds wishy-washy.

Hello X.

I haven't yet been paid for our session on xx/xx/xx.

Thank you,

Boot

I don't think the OP meant kisses. I think they were blanking out their name!

I think the Xs are just in place of the people’s names, not kisses 🤣

I have a template for this purpose. Sadly, it gets used at least once each month (I charge a month in advance). I send out a text message to people who are late after the 10th of the month. Only have to change the name, date and the amount on the message. Makes it a little less annoying than drafting the reminder every time from scratch.

I think your suggestion is good op.

I have to deal with this all the time! So frustrating isn't it?

I do wimp out a little, and usually message along the lines of, Dear X, Just checking my accounts and I haven't received payment for X lesson date X. Please can you process this payment as soon as you can as I am doing my accounts and we are nearing the end of the week/month etc.

For new clients now, I'm taking payment up front a month in advance.

Oh and mine is very similar to Waggins. Be formal, brief and to the point.

Thanks so much for your suggestions, everyone! Yep, the Xs were to block out my name haha Grin

Hi NameChangeTimeNow,

I’ve done A LOT of tutoring in my time, and the biggest PITA was getting student to cough up, after I’d spent hours prepping and then delivering a decent lesson. It’s so annoying and uncomfortable having to bring up the subject of £, but they agreed in the first place and it’s a service that needs to be paid for following completion.

With particularly ‘forgetful’ students, I asked for payment upfront (and offered a discount for this), and with sometimes forgetful ones, I would text afterwards, telling them that I was doing my monthly accounts and would appreciate payment ASAP.

Nip it in the bud. You do get the odd rotter who will always put you in this position and virtually refuse to pay; if so, get rid and stick to the decent students!
