To think she's too old for this?

My MIL is 66, and I just don’t think shes dressing for her age. She has this obsession of staying “young”, hates being called gran and told my DC off for calling her that. She thinks gran is “too old” and wants to be called Nan instead. She wears really short dresses during the summer and at Christmas parties, the dresses literally just cover her bum and if she bends over you will be able to see it, not only that but her boobs are hanging out. Today she came round in black leggings/tights (I could see her knickers, they were like blackish see through) a pink hoodie with holes and brown ugg boots.

AIBU to think she should just embrace her age and be happy? I’ve met her younger sister, couple years younger than MIL and they’re worlds apart.

If she’s happy, leave her alone.

It doesn't sound particularly attractive or elegant, but I also don't see why anyone should feel they have to 'age gracefully'. Life is too short and she might see clothes as a way of expressing her personality.

I never dressed like that no matter how young I was. I don't think this is a question of age but rather a question of taste.

She sounds ace.

Im 81 and prefer the term nan as i dont like the word gran its too harsh and yes old sounding, but i agree with you if shes dressing like a teenager then she is being a bit daft, i wear tee shirts and jeans and my short short dresses from my younger days stay in the wardrobe as 90s vintage lol, but at the end of the day its her choice what shes wears and shes not hurting anyone

isseywithcats Mon 23-Apr-18 19:37:35

done it again im 61 not 81 lol

Leave her alone - if she's happy let her wear whatever she wants.

^ this. Surely even a gorgeous 21 year old would look crap in see through leggings, a hoody with holes and brown uggs?

MrsDylanBlue Mon 23-Apr-18 19:39:51

It’s not very nice to slate her for what she likes to wear but why don’t you go shopping together - she might have lost her way a bit.

If she is happy though - leave her alone.

Ach leave her be, it’s her body she can cover it how she pleases (as long as it’s not indecent exposure in the legal sense obviously).

TheHulksPurplePants Mon 23-Apr-18 19:40:44

Not your desicion really is it?

LovelySouffle Mon 23-Apr-18 19:41:30

Funnily my maternal grandmother hates "nan" because it makes her sound old, and prefers "grandma".

She's 91.

On crikey! I'm 67, I wear leggings and tunic tops. I'm too old for this? I wear dresses the come above my knee. Shame on me? I wear what I want, when I want and I've earned the right to do so. It's none of your business, butt out

Idontdowindows Mon 23-Apr-18 19:53:42

Oh goodness, leave her be. None of your business what she wears!

SerenDippitty Mon 23-Apr-18 19:54:43

Do you know, I think this is one good th8ng about not having any children. There’s no one to tell me I’m dressing too young for my agegrin

Leave her alone OP.

Puffycat Mon 23-Apr-18 19:55:06

It’s not an age issue at all!
Leave her be! She can wear what she wants!
Would you have a problem with a larger 21 year old wearing the same thing?
Basically you think she’s being inappropriate and you’d prefer a ‘gran’ in crimpolene and a brown coat pulling a shopping trolley, not cool!

Dangerousmonkey Mon 23-Apr-18 19:55:55

They're clothes, it's her body. Get a hobby that isn't putting down other women.

IamXXHearMeRoar Mon 23-Apr-18 19:56:08

Rude OP, who made you boss?

pasturesgreen Mon 23-Apr-18 19:56:42

^This. See-through anything and dresses that barely cover the arse are hardly a good look on anyone.

That said, it's really not up to you to mention it, OP.

sunshineshitsndagiggle Mon 23-Apr-18 19:59:14

I think Nan sounds older but my babies nan chose to use it for the same reason and that's fine with me. You sound horrible. Of course she should wear whatever the fuck she wants.

Wheresthebeach Mon 23-Apr-18 20:00:55

Dear God - is there never an age where we can wear what the fuck we want without people piling in to judge.

Just leave off OP.

Cheeseboard89 Mon 23-Apr-18 20:03:16

User1471 I wish her dresses came above her knee, they barely cover her arse!

I get it, it's none of my business. I just wanted to hear your opinions on this issue.

sweeneytoddsrazor Mon 23-Apr-18 20:05:30

How old are you and how do you dress OP

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow Mon 23-Apr-18 20:09:17

She has embraced her age and is happy. Let her be.
