To have not eaten these prawns?

Currently on holiday in Asia. This evening we went out for dinner at a place that has great TA reviews. I ordered 300g of the garlic prawns, which arrived in the form of four HUGE langoustines. On closer inspection though, two of them turned out to be a distinctly off-putting shade of green around the head, so I didn’t eat them. DH got cross saying it was a waste and an insult to their cooking.

Now I’m a huge seafood fan. I can wolf away a pint of prawns and a seafood platter at Mersea Island seafood shed like they’re running out of them. But I’ve never encountered green prawns before. WIBU to have left them?

I don’t eat prawns but DH does. I wouldn’t eat them if they were green either! X

ApproachingATunnel Sun 22-Apr-18 16:37:45

They look disgusting but then i’m not a fan of seafood anyway. Yuk.

BirdyWordy Sun 22-Apr-18 16:40:48

That middle picture! No way would I eat that. It looks rotten.

Eifla Sun 22-Apr-18 19:14:25

I wouldn’t have eaten them.

Now I want to go to the Company Shed sad —checks tide times for the strood—

Eifla Sun 22-Apr-18 19:15:26

Strike out fail smile

I wonder how many mumsnetters are wondering what the stood is grin.

Hecticlifeanddrowning8 Sun 22-Apr-18 19:21:22

Oh hell no ! I wouldn't be risking a bout of food poisoning on Holiday

WorraLiberty Sun 22-Apr-18 19:21:38

'An insult to their cooking'?

What sort of weird statement is that when you're in a restaurant?

Does he eat every single thing cooked for him by chefs in the UK, no matter how shit it is, because he's too afraid to complain and upset them? confused

Liskee Sun 22-Apr-18 19:23:52

They look hideous. I wouldn't have eaten them either!

Passmethecrisps Sun 22-Apr-18 19:24:22

It’s a restaurant and they look distinctly dubious.

Tell your husband that chefs serving potentially dangerous food is an insult to their customers

drivingmebananas Sun 22-Apr-18 19:33:05

Yuck. You did the right thing not eating green slimy prawn muck!

Pastaagain78 Sun 22-Apr-18 19:35:29

A big NOPE from me!

fourandnomore Sun 22-Apr-18 19:35:36

I would not have eaten them either, I certainly would have offered them to dh though if that was his attitude wink

fourandnomore Sun 22-Apr-18 19:36:54

Oh and I once spent 10 days with food poisoning thanks to one decorative prawn on top of a fish curry so I definitely wouldn't risk prawns that look anything but perfect.

Notcontent Sun 22-Apr-18 19:39:25

The green stuff is prawn poo - I had this explained to me recently by a friend who is a chef. Basically apparently you are supposed to starve the prawns for a period of time before ending their life to ensure they empty their digestive tract but apparently this doesn't always happen.

ButDoYouAvocado Sun 22-Apr-18 19:40:12

I have eaten green ones before and was assured they were fine - they were. If you look on Google its normal. They don't look great I must admit.

Caulk Sun 22-Apr-18 19:43:57

I used to work in a fish restaurant and agree that they are fine (it’s poo) but don’t look great.

jkl0311 Sun 22-Apr-18 20:32:50

Just wretched at the middle picture. Do not eat that!!!

savagebaggagemaster Sun 22-Apr-18 20:36:37

This confirms my long held assertion that I will never eat prawns. sad

fannyanddick Sun 22-Apr-18 22:35:27

I had fresh water prawns in a restaurant once. One was almost black in the head. I called over the waiter and was told 'they are meant to be green, it is the type of prawn they are. They are fine'. I have never been so ill. I was sick so much that I passed out from standing on the bathroom floor. Never again will I go against my instinct!

FASH84 Sun 22-Apr-18 22:39:43

As others have said it's poo, but still a bit grim. I love Mersea island seafood shed! We must live in a similar area. I wouldn't imagine the restaurant are offended, it's a weird thing to take personally, it's business.

Storm4star Sun 22-Apr-18 22:40:07

Omg I wish there had been a trigger warning on that 🤣🤣didn’t realise you were actually posting a pic! I have a strange phobia of prawns, can’t even look at them so had to cover the pic with my hand while I read your post! Only even clicked as I was gonna write “why would anyone eat prawns, disgusting things” off to sleep now and will probably have nightmares about the things “shudder” 😭🤢🤮

ladymariner Sun 22-Apr-18 22:49:58

Hell would freeze over before I ate those, they look absolutely vile!
Where is Mersea Island seafood shed, that sounds much more appealing, I usually love prawns but not ones filled with green poo

it's just not worth the risk if you think something is wrong
