To think someone else could’ve made better use of this Marathon place?

its obviously really difficult to get a place in the Marathon... a record amount of people applied for the ballot and after that you have to try and get a charity place and pledge to raise X amount for them. My DH is running for a charity and we have worked really hard to raise the required money, having a raffle, quiz, auction, getting sponsors and match funding by his company means that he has raised over 5k so far (without the matching). I know a few others running and they’ve done all sorts to raise the money for their charities and really worked at it.

I saw Katie Price post earlier that she was running for the British Lung foundation, and nosily clicked her link to see how much she’d raised... having a celebrity run for you must be amazing, they have such a platform and can attract massive donors.

She had made £500. Now, that’s a lot of money to me! But it seems she only very recently made her page and publicised it... it makes me feel annoyed for the people I know who would’ve loved a place and raised far far more.

I’m sure she will raise more (by tomorrow!), but to give the charity the best chance of money they need, surely posting this more than a couple of days before the Marathon should have been a prerequisite?

Just annoyed me. I’m probably being unreasonable! Grin

Nah they’re probably more interested in the publicity of her running for them. Her mum has lung probs doesn’t she?

Bet she doesn’t even finish. Same as the awful effort those Towie lot put in (might have been Jade Goody actually)

She could well top up whatever she's raised with her own money to make the charity's required amount for having one of their places. Plus the added publicity of having someone known run for them.

I'm sure there are lots of people who essentially buy a charity place with their own money, who don't have the profile that KP does, so this doesn't bother me.

She didn't finish

Was she officially running? She didn't appear to have a number on and was standing in front of the empty start? I'd go with self promotion tbh. Loathsome woman.

She's raised her target and raised awareness. Can't complain about that.

Her stated target was £2,000 and she said in an interview that her longest training run was 6.5 miles because she wanted to save her energy for the big day. I agree that someone else would have probably raised more money for the charity.

None of this story adds up,

The person called Katie Price didn't make it past the second time check according to the marathon website.

Also I've not seen a single photo of her with any other runners in the background.

And most telling, she didn't have a registration number on her on any photos.

She could raise much more money much more quickly if she chose to.

Well done to your DH, OP. That's brilliant!

Re KP..YANBU!

Gordon and tana Ramsey had places and didn’t even run at all so why single out katie price? I’m sure there were plenty of others too.

Was she actually registered to run?? Was it an official sponsorship? Did she finish? (Above post says no)
She's a waste of space.

If people want to run the marathon then they should pay for their place themselves and give the money to charity out of their own pocket. I would never ask people to fund my hobby. Especially when you can go for a run completely free of charge if you want to. I get that it’s good that it raises money, I just think sponsorship is such a weird concept.

KP was entered into the marathon by a charity. She’s entered a few times before and (I think) not finished before. She dressed up as a pair of lungs though and got loads of coverage about it. I’m sure that goes down as a win from the charities POV. Which, if it is all about charity, is surely better than someone shaking their tin at all their friends, raising a bit and then never thinking of the charity again.

I guess the difference is they aren't making it look like they ran it.

Why register and not run or raise nothing? Bizarre. And self centred as you’re pointing out op.

We saw her today at around 8 miles barely walking also on the app she was registered at 10k so she did try. My husband also ran today raising money for the NSPCC but he wasnt able to create numerous headlines and extensive publicity and awareness for his charity like she was. I also think its generally in her advantage to fuck up, shes not well liked so few would rush to praise or congratulate if she had completed it but if she had to pull out from injury (probably due to lack of training) people love to and are quick to jump at the opportunity to put her down so more publicity for her and her charity.

What annoys me about this as she was in a magazine interview last week where she was bragging about how little training she had done. I did the marathon last year and I was grateful for my place and she just throws that back in folks faces.

Injury is one thing you can't avoid but she didn't even try to run or complete it and gave up by 9 miles. Waste of a space.

I don't know if it was only me but I noticed a distinct lack of TV time for any celebs running today. Normally they focus on them but this year it was those two great guys from last year, the Forrest Gump costume d runner and the Grenfell firefighters.

I liked it.
