So tonight I put some stupid programme on in the background. DH was working late so I didn't want to watch something we both wanted to see and that pretty much rules out everything! So I watched something on iPlayer about sex dolls.

The presenter was a guy who had a robotic arm and leg due to an accident. But it became clear that he was uncomfortable with some of the content as it was so sexual.

What I thought would be a documentary about sex dolls and how weird they are was actually about AI in sex dolls where they actually interact and basically engage with the user. Yes, weird, but still. No judgement here I suppose.

Anyway, a few minutes of not really watching later, the presenter was in tears. Clearly very upset. So I started paying attention to see a very realistic, naked doll with the physique of a young girl. My heart hit my stomach.

Is this really what we are doing? The whole thing is just disgusting. The body of a woman should be respected and sexual activity should be between two consenting adults. What will this do to our values? Men will become used to permanently available dolls who need no respect or boundaries.

And the issue of there being a child doll, where do you even start with that? I don't even know what I want to get out of this I don't know whether I'm angry or upset.

Am I being ridiculous and hysterical? Something about seeing it has really affected me.

MrsSmile Mon 16-Apr-18 21:52:06

I dunno - there is the school of thought that an inanamate object is better being used for those persuasions than a child.

2andcountingtodate Mon 16-Apr-18 21:55:05

That sounds really really wrong. Having a child doll...grim. having it interactive just adds to that.

How rich and fucked up would you have to be to afford that and buy it? I watched a 'normal' AI programme and they were pretty cool and worth a lot of money. An interactive sex one must cost a hell of a lot.

NewYearNewMe18 Mon 16-Apr-18 21:58:20

They are made specifically for a reason

Isnt it just one step closer to abusing a real child? Like someone may start as a peeper, then a stalker, then break in a house to assault someone?

ificouldwritealettertome Mon 16-Apr-18 22:06:04

NewYear it didn't say anything about that in the programme. The manufacturer just awkwardly avoided the issue and said it was to represent a 'more petite' individual and so is only marketed in Japan. It is clearly not an adult though

Catspaws Mon 16-Apr-18 22:09:32

I am also sympathetic to your concern OP. I've seen a similar documentary where the sex dolls were programmed to respond to abusive language with submission. Is it better for men to express violence against a robot than a person, or are we condoning the erosion of boundaries and respect? I don't know the answer and it makes me uncomfortable.

kalinkafoxtrot45 Mon 16-Apr-18 22:10:17

It is a revolting trend. I don’t see how the availability of child dolls in particular will do anything but feed that twisted desire.

MrsSmile Mon 16-Apr-18 22:10:58

Catspaws

I am with you. I just don’t know.

BrutusMcDogface Mon 16-Apr-18 22:12:13

So disturbing, as are the article posted above, and related links. sad

LeighaJ Mon 16-Apr-18 22:14:08

As if a paedophile wouldn't ever hurt a child because these dolls exist. Keep dreaming.

Sexual violence tends to escalate from a thought here and there, to fantasies, to images, to porn videos, to peeping toms/stalking, to play acting perhaps with a prostitute, to attacking a victim. Not necessarily all of those or in that exact order, child dolls would just be another step before a real victim.

Also, as crude as it sounds, it's probably much easier to find a real child then to afford one of those dolls, an AI doll can't come cheap.

There was a documentary on TV a few months ago presented by Stacey Dooley, in Tokyo, about the penchant amongst Japanese men for schoolgirls - young teenage prostitutes in school uniform, older ones dressed as schoolgirls... and 'schoolgirl' sex dolls. Utterly repellent, but I'm less uncomfortable thinking of one of these men using a doll than knowing he could be abusing a child.

NewYearNewMe18 Mon 16-Apr-18 22:14:45

I'm not about to start researching on a home PC, Germany, for one example, has specific programmes to address the issue of paedophilia. It needs the person to come forward and seek help. We don't have that option in the UK. The Bradbury case partially covered this with its findings. no one knows whether it would be of any use though. It isn't really measurable is it ?

MrsSmile Mon 16-Apr-18 22:16:01

LeighaJ

Not all Paedophiles are offenders.

ificouldwritealettertome Mon 16-Apr-18 22:22:14

I just don't know either. All I know is the image of that realistic, life like child's body lying there waiting to be used for sex really disturbed me. I feel a little shaken, like I've watched a scary horror film or something.

sadiesnakes Mon 16-Apr-18 22:22:48

I remember there was an A.I show last year, where they had an adult sex doll for men to 'try out', it was used by several men over a short period of time and they totally destroyed it, apparently it was so broken and soiled it was beyond repair. It's a totally repulsive concept even when it's modelled on an adult female and won't lead to any good.

RitaMills Mon 16-Apr-18 22:24:15

I’m sure they are illegal to buy in the UK, even having them shipped over. I have a vague recollection of reading a news story about a UK man who was arrested for buying child sex dolls. Hopefully we stay this way as I totally agree it is just another step towards abusing a real child.

Jaxhog Mon 16-Apr-18 22:28:22

That is really quite disturbing. Personally, I find the whole idea of sex dolls disturbing. It objectifies women and encourages men into thinking real women should be like this. As for child sex toys...grim.

incywincybitofa Mon 16-Apr-18 22:30:38

I read an article this presenter had contributed to about this, and yes he was very upset.
All I will say is 50 SOG led to an increase in experimenting with BDSM and sex toys, why wouldn't an interactive child like sex doll not lead to the next level.
The AI figures that will do things that brothel workers wont, and are willing and able when your OH is reluctant.

btw @mrssmile could you please explain your comment

jay55 Mon 16-Apr-18 22:31:06

Won't it normalise sex with children? Make it even more okay in their sick heads if the doll 'likes' it?

MrsSmile Mon 16-Apr-18 22:32:17

Which comment confused

moetryinpotion Mon 16-Apr-18 22:32:56

There was a news item recently about a Paris sex doll brothel (and whether or not it was illegal). What disturbed me most was that the sex dolls are 4'7" tall, so about the same height as a pre-teen girl hmm

ificouldwritealettertome Mon 16-Apr-18 22:34:47

incywincy Do you remember the article? I would like to see what he has to say, he was (understandably) very emotional in the documentary and so didn't really comment

SpringNowPlease2018 Mon 16-Apr-18 22:38:03

OP "Men will become used to permanently available dolls who need no respect or boundaries."

A quick glance at the Relationships board suggests this already happens.

I haven't watched it but I was hoping it would make things better, that men like that would just get a robot instead of trying to find a girlfriend?

StaplesCorner Mon 16-Apr-18 22:41:52

As far as I know it is illegal to purchase the child like dolls in the UK, thank god.
