AIBU?

Corner shop man just massively overcharged me

Just popped to my local shop for a bottle of wine (£7) and some chocolates(£2). Paid by card and stupidly didn't check the amount on screen.

I then asked for a receipt and he didn't seem to want to give me one, but eventually folded it in half and put it in the bag.

I left the queue and checked the receipt and I had been charged £8 for the wine and £23 for the chocolate.* Twenty three pounds for a twix and a dairy milk!
*
I presumed a mistake had been made and went back up to be told "sorry can't give refunds." I tried to explain that I use the shop all the time as I'm just a few doors down and he pretended not to know what I was talking about. This was a new member of staff, the chap I normally get is "on holiday" apparently.

What the hell? Who can I contact about this? I feel like going back round there but I don't know what to say!!

I would not have moved & threatened to call the police. Can you go back with someone else & threatened them of the police? The problem though is since you left the shop they could say you had more things in your bag.

Frog I know they have CCTV so maybe I could use that to my favour, although I suppose they could just delete it.

I should have stayed but I just didn't feel I could challenge him on my own. Sad

Wait took the normal bloke is back and complain to him. If you have no joy with him, go to Citizens Advice Bureau/small claims court.

So you have a picture of the receipt? I'm interested to see how its displayed etc...

I would wait until your normal staff member is back and try again? As long as receipt clearly shows the charges were wrong.

Go back in tomorrow, with backup if you can e.g partner, and if it's your regular guy explain what happened and see how he reacts, or if it's that prick again then call the police there and then, and wait for them to come. £20 is a lot of money, and he's probably doing this to other people as well and needs to be stopped.

Is the receipt itemized? What does it say next to the £23 charge?

Report
BarbaraofSevillle · 12/04/2018 19:54

Would you be able to dispute the transaction with your bank as it was more than it should have been?

If it's a new or temporary member of staff could he be making lots of 'mistakes' like this?

Oh right, just re-read and it seems the cashier is on the fiddle.

Go back with someone else and try to speak to a different member of staff.

Is it a franchise chain like Premier, Happy Shopper, etc ?

I would not have moved & threatened to call the police.

Hmm and what do you think the police are going to do? a stock take? audit the till? or would you be hoping to be arrested for a breach of the peace Can you go back with someone else & threatened them of the police? and threatening behaviour?

Is your receipt itemised? If it is it is clear as day there has been an error. Not even corner shops charge £23 for a dairy milk! My guess is he doesn't know how to fix it and is hoping you won't make a fuss. I would tie him down to a date that the owner will be back and then persue it through him.

Of course he can give refunds - anyway, it's not a refund it's an incorrect entry. Were the chocolates £2.30 and he misentered into the till?

You should be fine to go back tomorrow with the receipt, as it should be obvious from that that there's been a mistake.

Go back in and tell him that unless it's sorted out you will be going to the police. This is fraud or theft isn't it?

Tell him or the owner that it is not a refund you were incorrectly overcharged.

Tell the bank and see if they can reclaim the money.

Ofcourse he can give refunds, its exactly the same as taking a payment except you select refund not sale.

Contact your bank and explain

pickles he might not have the code you need to enter on the card machine to do the refund. It asks for the pin number (that the owner sets up) when doing a refund in small shops.

The chocolates were meant to be £1 each.

No it's not a happy shopper etc, it's an independent small corner shop type place.

The receipt is itemised in a way, however, doesn't actually say "dairy milk" or "wine" etc, it's just numbers. So looks like this:

ITEM 00434 £8
ITEM 00265 £1
ITEM 00999 £22

Confused

Did he scan the bar codes?

Seems to be family run as well, so I don't know if I want to go to the guy that normally serves me.

Do you think my bank could do anything? I can't prove that I didn't buy that amount, is it worth calling?

Is there any item in the shop that actually costs £22? Probably not!

I would go back - take backup if you need to - and complain otherwise the CCTV may mysteriously go missing overnight. Trading Standards may be helpful if you call them tomorrow.

Report
wormery · 12/04/2018 20:09

there must be a way of seeing what each item is, go back when the owner or someone who knows what they are doing is at the till. If they kick up a fuss then go to the trading standards and citizens advice. are these codes on the barcodes of the stuff you bought.

Report
Doraaaa · 12/04/2018 20:09

Fekko no, no bar codes, just tapped numbers on the till.

Your word against his unfortunately. Let it go.

The number next to the ITEM will either be a barcode or a stock code. So all they have to do is identify the stock with that number and they can see that it doesn't cost £23.

Refunds are easy. I second the PP that said the guy didn't know how to do them so tried to talk his way out of it. But you shouldn't have left the shop really, we only have to put matters right whilst you are still in there. Which is why EVERYONE should check their change/receipt before they leave.

Report
wormery · 12/04/2018 20:11

I would also contact your bank to say you are disputing this amount. Definitely speak to the owner when you can.
