MY dopey mate and her cross breed dog

My mate bought a puppy last year and boasted about how she'd got a pedigree German shepherd for £25. I'm a dog enthusiast and could tell straight away that it wasn't a pure GS but I assumed as it grew up she'd realise this. She didn't. Instead she continuously posted pictures on Facebook and when people commented stuff like "he'd lovely Hun, what breeds are in him?" She would reply "he's purebred German shepherd Hun" etc! She was making herself look stupid it was so frustrating. Once a bloke commented "doesn't look purebred to me, got some Doberman in him maybe?" And she got all defensive and told him it was pedigree with unusual markings. He didn't respond.

She then came to me and said "did you see what that arsehole put on Facebook making out that the dog is cross!? So jealous!". I took the bait and said "well he's obviously got a lot of German shepherd in him hasn't he? He's close enough!" And fussed the dog. I tried to keep it light but she got snappy and said "he's pedigree, I saw both his parents!". Anyway I let it go but now she's talking about offering him up as stud at £200 a time. The dog is clearly a cross breed but she's advertising him as pedigree with no papers. It's false advertising for a start and a potential breeder will take one look at him and rip her to shreds, especially if they have travelled a long way. How do I get it through to her???!

You've told her your opinion. She's chosen not to listen to it.
Her problem

WhiteRabbitWhiteRabbit · 24/03/2018 18:21

You're not going to. Leave her to it.

IWantMyHatBack · 24/03/2018 18:22

You can get dog DNA tests, you could suggest she get one if she's going to offer him to breed from, and it would have the added bonus of shutting up all the haters on FB Wink

FittonTower · 24/03/2018 18:22

You tried, leave her to it. She paid £25 so she probably knows deep down and eventually someone will get through to her, i assume any breeder will be able to tell by looking at photos so won't end up travelling if her mates on Facebook can tell

KeepServingTheDrinks · 24/03/2018 18:22

I'd keep it zipped, she obviously won't thank you for telling her what she CLEARLY doesn't want to hear, so let her get on with it.

If asked again, just comment on the dog's character, and don't like any of her FB posts.

Spicylolly · 24/03/2018 18:23

She is BU for not neutering him in the first place....too many dogs being pts everyday without more coming into the world! She sounds like a twat.

StuckInMyDressingGown · 24/03/2018 18:23

You don’t need to get through to her. She’s clearly not going to change her mind. If people want to breed from her dog with no paperwork, that’s up to them.

FairfaxAikman · 24/03/2018 18:23

Well he can't properly be considered a pedigree if he doesn't have papers - it's as simple as that.
You cant advertise them as such without papers. I've had a few that are purebred but not pedigreed myself. Seeing the parents means nothing without the papers to prove the lineage.

HeyRoly · 24/03/2018 18:25

It's false advertising for a start and a potential breeder will take one look at him and rip her to shreds

I think you're just going to have to let that happen!

WorraLiberty · 24/03/2018 18:26

I unless you're paying her £200 to breed with your dog, just keep out of it.

wildduckhunt · 24/03/2018 18:28

There's no getting through to idiots. Unless you get her to do one of those doggy DNA tests for £35 so she can use it to prove her haters wrong or not.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 24/03/2018 18:28

Any idiot that pays some random £200 stud fee for a dog that looks like a Heinz 57 deserves what they get anyway.

You’ve been much more diplomatic about it than I would have been. Well done Grin

whatsitallabout1 · 24/03/2018 18:29

As it's a crossbreed at least it's probably healthier!

YorkieDorkie · 24/03/2018 18:29

Your friend is an idiot and if people want to pay to breed with her dog then more fool them.

DaisyChainsForever · 24/03/2018 18:38

I agree with a doggy dna test. Can get it done via Pets at Home. That way she will have either proof or the truth.

AlpacaLypse · 24/03/2018 18:39

And this is yet another reason why dog owners should be licensed. Not dogs - owners.

WiddlinDiddling · 24/03/2018 18:45

Idiot indeed, but people who haven't asked for advice very rarely listen to it.

You could try pointing out that she is only going to get people with mongrels interested, no one with an actual pedigree dog is going to give her dog a second look.

Then remind her she needs to account for her earnings and stud fees are taxable income.

MsHarry · 24/03/2018 18:47

YABU for typing the word 'hun'.

pigsDOfly · 24/03/2018 18:50

Well given that she's adamant that the dog is a pedigree, although she only paid £25 for it and has no details of its pedigree. And given that everyone is telling her it not a purebred dog and she's insisting that it is, I think you're going to have a hard time convincing her.

Does she really think that anyone would sell a pure bred puppy for £25 when they could get several hundred for it? Why would they? She sound incredibly stupid.

Seeing the 'parents' is no proof of anything. Anyone can put two dogs in a room with a puppy and claim it's the parents, doesn't mean it is. People who sell dogs from puppy mills do this all the time.

Sounds like you're just going to have to let her get on with it I'm afraid.

Skiiltan · 24/03/2018 18:53

Does she have a racing pigeon, too?

Birdsgottafly · 24/03/2018 18:53

Dog owners shouldn't be licenced, different breeds need different circumstances. Dog breeders should be licenced and we should be able to cap breeding for breeds that are filling the shelters.

OP, keep out of it. She can offer what she wants. I doubt anyone will take her up on it. Normally a breeder will ask for a photo of the papers to be sent over. No-one will be wasting their time.

TheQueenOfWands · 24/03/2018 18:56

Who cares? A dog is a dog, surely?

You get them for love and kisses and nose boops.

Does it matter if it's a cross breed?

I paid way over the odds for my 'pedigree' dog, and knowing what I know now, I'd pay double. We got a DNA test, turns out she has 4 different breeds in her DNA, it didn't disappoint me. She is a doll, she has the kindest heart and her DNA results informed me exactly why is is how she is, it all makes sense now, it has helped with her training. I am glad she is a cross (and knowing how she is with my niece and nephew, I'd pay triple). She will be healthier and live longer. I was desperate for a dog, my DH said he liked the breed we got, we didn't get a puppy. I would have got a rescue, but as we both work FT, they wouldn't have us. We pay dog walkers everyday (she's not just left).

However, I hate people having dogs to make money off them. Breeders need to know exactly what they are doing. And I don't agree with professional breeders (at the minute), there are too many dogs that are in need of a home. They should be monitored. I had a close relative that thought a quick buck could be made from their dog...only one pup survived, their dog nearly died. The vets didn't rush out, they didn't know what they were doing. We need to get over our obsession with 'pedigrees', most 'pedigrees' that are popular now, aren't pedigrees anyway they are cockapoos or puggles. It breaks heart that some pedigrees are breed so finely that they are dangerously unhealthy.

pigsDOfly · 24/03/2018 18:59

Well it clearly matters to the OP's friend because she's insisting it's pedigree and is going to offer it up as such to breeder as a stud, which is why the OP started the thread.
